KEVIN RYAN & THE BLACK FRIDAYS
FIELDS have announced their first Dublin headline show which will take place on Friday, May 12th in Whelan’s.
Ahead of the release of the band’s debut album ‘Cormorants’ this summer
Live from the Window
Ronan Ó Snodaigh, Eoin Dillon & friends.
7-9pm (until 27th Jun) – FREE
“Whelans First Ever Regular Trad Session”
Believe it or not Whelan’s has never hosted a regular trad session.
No one knows quite why but what we do know is what we want ‘Call The Dancers’ to achieve.
There’s a clue in the name. Trad geeks may recognise ‘Call The Dancers’ as a battle cry issued on ‘I gCnoc na Graí / In Knocknaree’ a live album by Tony McMahon and Noel Hill from 1985 that captures the spirit and passion we humbly hope to take a stab at generating.
Call The Dancers is where Rónan Ó Snodaigh and Eoin Dillon and friends will share the tunes they love.
They’ll be sharing them with each other and with the dancers, drinkers and groovers who cross Whelans threshold each Tuesday for the next three months.
This will be blistering. It will ooze the excitement of our glorious music and bring it to the world with the force it deserves.
Call The Dancers is for and by people who adore trad and can’t get enough of it.
We’ll be updating who the guests are when we know.
Sometimes we will know in advance, sometimes we won’t.
Whelan’s Silent Disco, now every Mon, Tue & Wed from 11pm – 2 DJs, just pick the one you like best [Free Entry] plus Late Bar.

‘AN INTRODUCTION’ EP TOUR
plus support
Mr. Billy Fitzgerald is a charming, witty, and self-deprecating champion of 90s R&B rhythms, folksy acoustic guitar, and remarkable harmonies that are informed by the likes of Prince, Beck, and Eels. He’s releasing his debut EP “An Introduction” on April 14th with a national tour including the launch show at Whelans, Dublin.
In a previous life, he fronted alt-pop band The Dead Flags and played on stages all over Europe, from Ireland’s ‘Sea Sessions’ to Germany’s ‘Eir Mit Speck’ as well as multiple appearances at Hard Working Class Heroes. He released Top 30 singles in Ireland, the acclaimed “Gentlemen’s Club” album and received heavy rotation on BBC Radio One, 2FM, Today FM and RTE Radio One. It was wonderful, but nothing lasts forever.
Between then and now, Billy found himself searching to find a sound that represented him and his relationship with music. He spent three years in the studio – completely alone – writing, recording, experimenting and exploring.
The outcome is a concoction of old-school drum machines, down-to-earth acoustic guitar, joyous harmonies, and catchy melodies. Billy’s trademark upper-register and sweet, sweet falsetto is layered on top resulting in a liberated take on solo songwriting. Additional drums are provided by Dennis Cassidy (Mixtapes From The Underground, Selk) but after that every instrument, every voice and every sound has been created, performed and produced by Mr. Billy Fitzgerald.
“An Introduction” is the forerunner of Billy’s first long-player due later this year. The EP will be released through the usual digital services and in physical form on the tour.
“A tour de force… brimming with energy interspersing songs with some witty banter” – State Magazine
“Charismatic and engaging… Billy Fitzgerald blends infectious rock songs with a fantastic voice.” – Hot Press

A busy port town in Ireland’s South East is the last place you’d expect such a fearless, dark & raw sound to emerge from. With the respective birthplaces of blues & grunge situated thousands of miles away, location becomes a mere fact of conscious reality once you let yourself in.

Brought to you by Le Crunch Apples from France.
We’ve just won a bet with a friend who reckoned we’d never be able to reference Kicks Like a Mule’s oldskool dance classic in a post. But the point still stands. If you want to attend the final, you need to fill out the form below.
The grand final of the Le Crunch Apple of My Eye Song Contest is kicking off at 7pm (doors open at 6:15pm) in Whelan’s on 23 March and it promises to be an amazing night. Katie Cassidy, Slow Seas, Crossing Paths, Scoops and Mimi Lane & Stephen Kelly are the five finalists, having battled their way through some serious competition.
They’ll be performing their chosen tune live on the night, hoping to win over a panel of judges that includes Maximum Media Broadcast Director Paddy McKenna, Ham SandwicH singer Niamh Farrell and Peter Dunne, owner of BARE in the Woods. There will also be performances from former Le Crunch Apple of My Eye Song Contest winners Brave Giant and Flat Out on the night.
There’s €1500 on the line for the winner so expect the atmosphere to be electric. In case you need a reminder of what our finalists did to get here, we’ve included their songs below.
