With the luxury of live music being taken from us over the last few months, legendary radio DJ Dave Fanning has partnered with Guinness and Whelan’s to bring viewers at home the next best thing. Fanning will host a special two-part series, featuring nine up-and-coming and established Irish acts, all of whom had big plans on the live circuit for 2020 – plans that were dashed back in March when the pandemic hit Ireland.

At a time when supporting Irish talent has never been more important, Fanning has come together with Guinness and Whelans to give these artists a platform, during a period when live concerts are non-existent  and the novelty of virtual gigs has worn off.

Fanning will bring together the artists across the series, airing in December on Virgin Media One and Two. With filming taking place in Dublin’s reknowned and best-loved live music venue, Whelan’s, the first show will air on December 17th with the second to follow on December 26th. The series will include names such as Soda Blonde, Sorcha Richardson, Mick Flannery, Alex Gough, Somebody’s Child, Andrea Corr, Isaac Butler, The Academic and Villagers. Fanning will also treat viewers to special guests and features with Irish legends such as Phil Lynott, U2 and Shane MacGowan to name but a few.

Speaking about the upcoming show, Dave Fanning said: “I am thrilled to be involved in such an exciting project. Music in Ireland is part of our cultural DNA and is of huge economic importance. The music and entertainment industry are a vital part of what makes this country unique and attractive. Not only that, but the Irish artists who are so important to the country’s health and wellbeing, should be encouraged, supported and celebrated at every opportunity, especially at a time when it is more important than ever that we support Irish talent.’’

With the spread of Covid-19 having a devastating impact on performers, venues and booking agents whose livelihoods were turned upside down overnight, Fanning at Whelans will provide viewers with a small sense of normality when it comes to celebrating the Irish stage. Although we all hope to celebrate the return of the live music scene sometime in the near future, until we get there, Fanning at Whelans will get viewers as close as possible to the real thing.
