KINKY FRIEDMAN

Aiken promotions presents

KINKY FRIEDMAN

[Bi-Polar World Tour]

plus special guests

Yes, the Kinkster is going global again in 2013.  Starting in mid-March, Kinky will be visiting the UK, Scandinavia, Holland, Belgium and all points European including a one night-only show for Whelan’s, Dublin 28th April 2013 before heading straight down under for a full tour of Australia and New Zealand.  And why, you say, has the Jewish Troubadour (and governor of the heart of Texas) bitten off such a sizable chunk of the planet?

It’s because he’s both energized and excited about all things Kinky, one of the most exciting being his new book written with Willie Nelson, ‘Roll Me Up And Smoke Me When I’m Gone.’  Kinky’s extensive forward and full-on collaboration with Willie has perked the ears of the publishing world, and the book promises to be one of the top sellers of the fall and winter seasons.

And did we mention Kinky Friedman’s Man In Black Tequila, one of the hottest new potent potables on the market today?  US distributorships are spreading like wildfire, with world domination of the tequila markets looms large.

But the BiPolar World Tour is nothing if not a fact-finding mission, as Kinky calculates world political views, particularly toward the Kinkster, himself.  For Kinky is considering a second run for Texas governor.  After stunning international gaffes by hi-powered US politicos such as Mitt Romney and (current Texas governor) Rick Perry, the Kinkster will bring a remarkably fresh view of American politics with him.  Pollsters and the Kinky-ites believe he can win this time.  Strong international cred will certainly help.

“At it’s best Chateau Revenge delights…. and the likes of What If It Isn’t Out There? and Somebody Said Your Name are just gorgeous” The Guardian

“This is uncurdled pop music, the kind of thing you could sprinkle on your dreams and eat with a spoon” The Word magazine

“The best band in the world!” Danny Baker

The Silver Seas’ Daniel Tashian and Jason Lehning were raised deep within the Nashville music scene. Tashian’s dad Barry was lead singer of the Boston-based, mid-sixties cult combo The Remains and subsequently toured with Emmylou Harris’ Hot Band. Lehning’s dad Kyle is a well-respected country music producer and the former president of Asylum Records Nashville. While the young Lehning apprenticed behind the boards, Tashian was developing into a formidable singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.

Tashian, has a knack for creating instantly memorable melodies to pair with often plaintive lyrics, though he’s no show-off; his craftsmanship seems effortless, as if he just dashed off these sneakily addictive numbers in his spare time. Grammy-winning producer, arranger and keyboardist Jason Lehning doesn’t polish these songs to perfection because they sound gorgeous in nearly naked form.

“We’re a good team,” says Lehning. “We bring to each other what the other one doesn’t have. Daniel’s an incredibly spontaneous person and I’m an incredibly pragmatic person. When we work together, we get to be ourselves in a really good way. That makes a nice balance and it’s really enjoyable for me.”

Formed out of creative and financial necessity in June of 2010, Mikey and the Scallywags met on the streets of Galway and are still based on the west coast of Ireland. Renowned for their energetic and engaging live performances, the initial quartet of guitar, banjo, fiddle and double bass were joined by drums and keys to create a melodic and beat driven sound with elements of bluegrass, gypsy, hip-hop and swing.

Although a busking project initially, two months later they left the streets to perform at the Galway Arts festival 2010, followed a month later by their second gig at the Electric Picnic 2010. The Scallywags began touring all over Ireland and haven’t stopped since. Now with two highly successful years under their belts, 1,500 copies of the Living in the Light Ep sold and a fortune spent on new tyres, the band are readying to record the follow up album and hit the road for the upcoming festival season. Stay tuned for a single and accompanying video release this April.

The launch of ‘The Community Games’, an album containing new songs by Cave Ghosts, Ginnels, Grand Pocket Orchestra and No Monster Club. All four bands will be performing Upstairs in Whelan’s on the night.

The record will be released by Popical Island on 100 limited edition white label 12” LPs. Ten collectable covers will be available; each one featuring a different member of one of the bands.

THE FULL STORY

Grand Pocket Orchestra formed in Dublin in 2007, consisting of Paddy Hanna, Bronwyn Murphy-White, Mark Chester and Peter O’ Shea. With their unique ‘Fisher Price pop’ stylings, they attracted a whole load of plaudits, toured the world and wooed a lot of fans. One such fan was Bobby Aherne who went to so many of their shows that they decided they might as well just ask him to join. And so, on St. Patrick’s Day 2010, Grand Pocket Orchestra became a quintet. Bobby also made his own music, using the name No Monster Club. In a sort of musical exchange, Paddy and Mark offered to become his live rhythm section, enabling them to tour Europe as a power pop trio. Their 2012 album ‘Dublin’ was dubbed the sixth best Irish album of the year by influential music blog Nialler9. Meanwhile Mark was also recording his own solo material. Using the pseudonym ‘Ginnels’, he has thus far released three highly acclaimed records, the latest of which (double album ‘Crowns’) was selected as the fifth best album of last year by Totally Dublin. When he performs live, he is accompanied by Paddy and Bobby, as well as members of Squarehead and Tieranniesaur. In 2012, after the release of their sophomore album ‘Ronald and Sylma’, Grand Pocket Orchestra replaced Toronto-bound drummer Maggie Fagan with Castleknock sticksmith Enda Canavan. Away from the drum stool, however, Enda was on bass-playing duties with harmonic summer popsters Cave Ghosts, alongside Jen Connell, Aoife O’Carra and Connor Walls. The first three songs ever recorded by Cave Ghosts are included here, highly accomplished and oozing sunshine. As well as sharing a rehearsal room underneath Dublin city (where these twelve tracks were produced), all four bands share members. But despite their inextricable connection, the singular character of each project is remarkably evident on these songs; from the expansive garage pop of No Monster Club to Cave Ghosts’ reverb-laden beach lullabies, past the infectious plink-plonk indie rock of Grand Pocket Orchestra and on to Ginnels’ jangly noise jams. This is the first time that all four groups (and all ten members) have been united on the same album.

DAN BAIRD & HOMEMADE SIN

Old Flat Top presents

DAN BAIRD & HOMEMADE SIN

On Stage 9pm – No support

The Georgia Satellites were one of the most ferocious bands of the 80’sand what set them apart from the other 10,000 groups who cranked their amps up to 11 was that their wild riffs and tanked cries came from a band that, from the start, understood it’s place in rock tradition and fought hard to solidify it with each recording.

The story starts in the early 80’s at Hedgen’s, a “country club for the spiritually impoverished and emotionally destitute” , as chief songwriter Baird would later identify it. Bassist Keith Christopher, Drummer Mauro Magellan and Guitarists Rick Richards and Dan Baird were playing on the Atlanta circuit in various bar bands such as the Hellhounds, the Brains and the Woodpeckers. These bands would gradually morph into the original Georgia Satellites.

#1 fan and road manager Kevin Jennings, sold an EP of early Satellites recordings to an independent UK record label, Making Waves and the EP, Keep The Faith, provoked an extraordinary reaction from the UK music press, which, in turn, woke up the previously indifferent stateside music industry. The stand-out track on the EP and most peoples introduction to the band was Keep Your Hands To Yourself which was swiftly culled from the bands eponymous debut major label release on Elektra and became a runaway grammy nominated hit, both LP and single only being kept off the respective #1 slot’s by Bon Jovi’s Slippery When Wet and Living On A Prayer. A second hit single, Battleship Chains, solidified the LP’s platinum success.

Where the Satellites really earned their reputation though, was with their live shows. All those years of three sets a night, paid dividends as their live performances laid waste to audiences across the States and in particular Europe, which took the band to it’s collective heart, a love affair that continues to this day.

Two more Elektra LP’s, Open All Night and the remarkable Salvation And Sin, plus a track, Hippy Hippy Shake, on the Tom Cruise movie soundtrack, Cocktail, followed, but by the early 90’s, all those years of incessant touring had taken their toll and the band split.

Dan Baird forged a successful solo career with Rick Rubin’s Def American, scoring major hits with the album Love Songs For The Hearing Impaired and single I Love You Period. A second LP, the critically acclaimed Buffalo Nickel, followed and Dan also developed a career as a highly sought after producer.

Post Satellites Mauro played on both of Dan’s Def American albums before taking time out to raise a family and concentrate on his other interests. Keith had also returned to the fold for the Def American recordings and like Mauro played on both ‘Love Songs For The Hearing Impaired’ and ‘Buffalo Nickel’. After recording ‘Buffalo Nickel’, Keith went on to join Kenny Wayne Sheppard’s band and play on a multitude of sessions, including Ayo’s 2006 double platinum debut Joyful.

In 2001 Dan returned to live performance, with the Sofa Kings, a band that featured hot shot guitarist Ken McMahan. The shows producing the live album, Redneck Savant. Dan also found time to record and tour as part of the alt “supergroup”, The Yayhoos who also featured Keith Christopher and long time Dan sparring partner Terry Anderson. The Yayhoos line up is completed by Eric “Roscoe” Ambel. The foursome have released two albums to date, Fear Not The Obvious in 2002, following it in 2007 with Put The Hammer Down.

2003 saw the release of a compilation of Dan and Georgia Satellites unreleased gems – Out Of Mothballs – and Mauro put out an album with his other band The Crashers – Love School. Dan, Keith, Mauro and Ken hit the road for the first of a sucession of tours which were documented on the 2005 double live set – Feels So Good.

In 2007 the band decided to take some time off to concentrate on writing and to recharge their batteries. During this period, Ken had his first child and decided to spend some time at home. His legacy and importance to the band are stamped all over the live cd and dvd set – Fresh Out Of Georgia – which will stand as a worthy testament to his time with the band.

His replacement is none other than Warner E. Hodges, also guitarist extrodinaire with Nashville legends, Jason And The Scorchers. Warner is probably the only guitarist capable of matching Dan’s intensity chord for chord and proved to be the missing piece in the Homemade Sin jigsaw. Long term friends, Dan had co-produced Warner’s 2007 debut solo album – Centerline.

February 2008, Dan, Warner, Mauro and Keith embarked upon the recording of Homemade Sin’s debut studio album. Recorded in Nashville the fourteen tracks on ‘Dan Baird & Homemade Sin’ represent the first new Dan Baird studio album since ‘Buffalo Nickel’.

The album was released in Europe in May 2008 to rave reviews and was playlisted by BBC Radio 2’s Bob Harris, an American release scheduled for 2009. Live audiences got to hear the new songs for the first time when Homemade Sin, joined the Quireboys on a highly successful package tour of the U.K. and Scandinavia. The band were back in Scandinavia once again in October with one veteran (and by all accounts highly jaded) music journalist giving the band a SIX out of FIVE star review and proclaiming the show to be the best gig he’d seen in over twenty years!

Can you give me an amen?

The New Haven, Connecticut-based Hatebreed got together in 1993 for the purpose of creating a “back to basics” hardcore band with heavy metallic guitars, screaming vocals, and 30-second songs. By 1997, Victory Records released the quintet’s debut full-length, entitled Satisfaction Is the Death of Desire. The group signed with Stillborn/Republic/Universal for 2002’s Perseverance and 2003’s Rise of Brutality. Supremacy arrived on Roadrunner Records in 2006, featuring new guitarist Frank Novinec (who’d previously spent time playing with Ringworm, Terror, and Integrity). Guitarist Wayne Lozinak joined the band in 2008. The band released For the Lions, a covers album, in May of 2009, followed by a new self-titled studio album in September. AFRICA UNITE

Whelanslive.com presents

AFRICA UNITE

plus guests

At the news of Bob Marley’s untimely death in 1981, musicians Bunna and Madaski formed a band and named it in honour of one of Marley’s best known, best loved songs- Africa Unite. Thirty years on, with 14 albums and hundreds of concerts under their belt, Africa Unite still tour Europe and their native Italy playing their own take on the music that holds an obsessional grip on all in its church Bunna and Madaski are no exception in this regard, since 1981 they’ve been devoted to the genre- dabbling occasionally in hip hop, funk and dubstep.

This eight piece line-up of vocals, two guitars, keys, sax, trumpet, bass and two percussionists has the full, rich range of the Caribbean sound at its heart. Their lyrics are often political, sometimes playful and sung both in English and their native Italian. Best known for their sunshine melodies, faultless groove and masterful production, Africa Unite have rightly earned a cult following on the European roots and reggae scene. They’ve recorded with the artists such as Kymani Marley, Alborosie, Princess Julianna, Sergent Garcia and are well respected by musicians and music lovers alike. But then this should come as no surprise as it’s fair to say that any act going strong for over 30 years is getting something right, and if reports of their live shows are anything to go by, that something is can be seen up close Monday 11th of April in the intimate settings of Whelan’s of Wexford Street.
