PLAYING FOR CHANGE

What began as a PBS documentary with the lofty goal of fostering hope and inspiration through music has now become a worldwide phenomenon. Inspired by the passion and energy of street musician Roger Ridley’s rendition of “Stand by Me,” Grammy award winning producer Mark Johnson set out across the globe on one of the most incredible journeys in modern music : Playing For Change. Aired as a documentary on PBS called Playing For Change: Peace Through Music and went completely viral on YouTube, with PFC’s “Stand By Me” video reaching well over 30 million views to date!

A collection of musicians from the documentary came together for a live performance at the 2009 SXSW festival as the Playing For Change Band. The group’s fervent delivery of blues, gospel, reggae and Afropop led to an amazing run of sold out shows, moving audiences worldwide and earning them a remarkable debut on Billboard’s Top 10 with Playing For Change – Songs Around The World.

Johnson traveled the world, recording and filming street musicians of different faiths, backgrounds, and ethnicities, then blended their contributions into one unified and moving performance. Many of these artists would never actually meet, but their talents and passion were brought together in song. Johnson explains the process as “layering musicians on top of each other. They could all hear whatever had come before them, and then they could find a way to make their track something that was more of a universal song.”

Continuing the visionary path created by a one-of-a-kind international music collective, Hear Music/Concord Music Group announce the release of Playing For Change – Songs Around The World Part 2 on May 31st  2011. By filming and recording dozens of musicians from around the world, filmmaker, producer and PFC founder, Mark Johnson captures stunning musical collaborations that seamlessly blend diverse styles of music into powerful performances, expanding on the journey that made Playing For Change one of 2009’s most unusual cultural phenomenons. The 2-disc CD/DVD package is a global mix of cultures and rhythms featuring original songs written for the album, as well as reinterpretations of internationally loved recordings including Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song,” Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground” and John Lennon’s “Imagine.”

“Songs stay alive in the same way that memories do, and being alive they grow up and undergo changes and develop. If a song is too weak to do that, if it is lacking in sufficient stamina and will to endure sadly it will not survive.” Nick Cave – The Secret Life Of The Love Song

Whelan’s are currently accepting submissions for their new weekly singer songwriter showcase. Birth and blossom of great songs has always being something that Whelan’s has been uniquely privileged to be a part to. It makes sense then for us to finally offer a platform for local and non local acts to experiment, sing and share in the friendly informal setting of Whelan’s upstairs. Taking our cues from our favourite artist’s musings on the creative process (Van Dyke Parks lends us the title from his seminal 1967 opus) this night offers artists a fresh new stage to breathe life into songs, experiment with ideas or simply just play for the sheer enjoyment of it. Each week will feature three to four acts playing 30 minutes. Song Cycle kicks off on Monday May 2nd 2011, entry is free and all are welcome. Please contact songcycle@whelanslive.com with submissions.

ALARMIST

WE ARE LOSERS

+ special guests

AVALANCHE AMMO

SquareD Management present a showcase featuring two bright young talents from their roster – Alarmist & We Are Losers with support on the night coming from Avalanche Ammo from the tropic of Kildare.

Alarmist are an instrumental four-piece from Dublin, who formed in 2008.  All members are multi-instrumentalists, playing an equal role in bringing together the organic and electronic elements that form their sound. This hugely talented band build their songs from tightly wound melodies and frenetic rhythms, a blend of interlocking guitars, glitchy electronics, dueling percussion and rich wind arrangements. Alarmist are perhaps best experienced in their live shows, which pairs music with live improvised visuals. Recently three out of four members of Alarmist performed as part of the Trinity Orchestra performing Songs From Daft Punk. Alarmist are currently finished recording. their stunning debut EP which we are looking to release in the summer of 2011 and are set to go on tour through Ireland and then UK dates. We Are Losers is the brain child of Gavin Elsted whom, after going down the remix route under the pseudonym Adultrock, decided to change it all up once again and enlist fellow noise makers Gary Clarke, Bronwyn Murphy-White and Steve Conlan to be part of the lineup. We Are Losers deliver their own unique slice of jangly, fuzz/surf pop and as Gav explains “We Are Losers comes from a desire to stray away from the nihilistic sentiments that a lot of similar bands go for – there’s a sort of cheeriness in it that we are all losers in our own way, no one wins all the time. “ We Are Losers are set to release their first double a sided 7” single mid summer called Cheerleader/Sunset Song. Two infectious, sunny songs, that provides the perfect soundtrack to long sunny days and party filled summer nights. Avalanche Ammo is a one-man eurphoric racket factory providing further evidence of just how far instrumetal music has evolved in Ireland. His debut Ep, Animals, is available for free download here

GREAT LAKES MYSTERY, GOODTIME + MAGIC POCKETS

GREAT LAKES MYSTERY

GOODTIME

MAGIC POCKETS

In between writing film scores and occasionally providing drums and percussion for artists such as Jape, Valerie Francis, Primordial and So Cow, Gareth Averill began to set focus on what would become Great Lakes Mystery. Great Lakes Mystery represents an obsession with pushing vintage analogue equipment as far as possible whilst attempting to stay faithful to his influences; Arthur Russell, Prince, Caribou, Broadcast and John Carpenter. In 2010 Great Lakes Mystery were honoured to be chosen as the tour support act for both The Redneck Manifesto and Jape. Since then the live show has been constantly evolving and has recently expanded from a one man and an array of sequencers and synths into a more open and expansive set up featuring a full band. The turn of 2011 saw a low-key dispersal of demos online. The soft release was received very well and included getting a mention in the English Sunday Independent as well being added to the Whelans ‘Ones To Watch’ event. After a few more live outings the first Great Lakes Mystery release proper will be with us later this year on limited edition 10” vinyl and download. Support comes from Goodtime, who is returning after a long hiatus due to the accusation of a design degree and a more economical moniker (he was previously known as Goodtime John) Magic Pockets is the name of Ruadhan O Meara’s lo-fi bedroom based electronic project. Combing vintage synthesizers and samples he draws upon the work of Tangerine Dream, Zombi, Ashra and Jan Hammer. There’ll be a limited specially recorded for the night free Great Lakes Mystery EP for the first few people in the venue.

TARANTELLA FALL

TARANTELLA FALL

+ guests

Dublin alt-folk rockers Tarantella Fall launched their debut album ‘Abandoned Road’ at the end of March. It contains a set of themed songs that could have been written for a speculative noir B-picture set in the American heartland. Its tells the the fictional story from various parts of the life of John W and is the kind of record the Coen Brothers would’ve made had they picked up telecasters instead of 16mm cameras. At the core of their sound though is good old-fashioned storytelling through song.

The album, essentially a modern take on the concept album, was recorded in the last half of 2010, under the production stewardship of Dave “Skippy” Christophers in his Karma Korner studio in Dublin. Musically it veers from Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Neil Young, hitting R.E.M. and Radiohead and lots more in between. Already it has picked up radio play on the national airwaves, with spins being given by John Murray on RTE Radio 1, Dan Hegarty on RTE 2fm and Paul McLoone on Today FM amongst others. They have also garnered press coverage in Hot Press, The Irish Times and The Star. The lads will be launching the first single taken from the long player, ‘Junk’, at Upstairs In Whelan’s on Saturday July 23rd.

THE KARTELS

THE KARTELS

+ guests While some bands can sleep all day and drink all night, The Kartels, a four piece rock band from Dublin have neither the luxury nor the time. All four members who work full time jobs dedicate all their spare minutes to practicing, writing and playing gigs, both in their local area and Dublin city. With songs such as “Don’t Let Them Get You Down” and “Good Times”, their uplifting style of rock influenced from the likes of U2, Kings of Leon, Ocean Color Scene and The Strokes combined together with their own blend adds a dynamic mix to the rock genre. The band’s early days were spent gigging in venues synonymous with Dublin’s music scene such as Eamonn Doran’s and The Hub. It wasn’t long before The Kartels retreated to local venues in order to fund the recording of their first song Until Tomorrow which was recorded in the Orion Recording Studios located at Blessington Lake, where the likes of Jaded Sun and The Jordonaires have also recorded. The band continued to play locally, building a strong following and raising their profile. After raising enough funds the band then recorded their second song, The same old feeling, in the K9 Studios in Deansgrange. The band enjoyed the hospitality so much so they returned to the studio to record yet more songs. The last two years have been kind to the band, not only have they broken out of the local scene to take on venues such as Whelans, The Twisted Pepper, The Academy and The Mezz with great success. Since 2007 they have mastered their performance, meshing well together and finding their definitive sound. The band just released their official video for their much anticipated debut single release “Dont Let Them Get You Down”. The video was shot in Westland Studios which has welcomed many top artists through its doors such as U2, Placebo, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan and Neil Hannon.
