MICHAEL COADY 4TET feat DAVE BINNEY

IMC presents

Micheal Coady 4tet featuring Dave Binney

and special guests

O.K.O.D.O.M.G.

&

Prime Collective

Bassist Michael Coady is a familiar face in Irish jazz, and no better man to kick off Whirligig, a new club night from IMC bringing you stimulating music in all its manifestations with working bands, breaking talent, one-offs and collaborations connecting Dublin to the world. These days Coady divides his time between Dublin and London, and the band are just back from a critically acclaimed performance at The Loop Collective Festival. Not surprisingly, given the talent he’s recruited, not least  Michael Buckley and Sean Carpio, hands down  the  finest tenor  and drums in the land. The brilliant Ivo Neame is pianist with Phronesis, piano trio of the moment and lauded as successor to EST. Dave Binney is no stranger to Irish audiences, who’ve grown to appreciate the New York saxophonist’s remarkable gift for melody that romps freely across all genres, from asymmetric funk and power chords to free improv and moody electronica. They’re here to put Coady’s recent compositional output through its paces, where an interest in West African and Brazilian grooves has percolated through his harmonically rich style. Whirligig is also a platform for new bands and ideas. Step forward O.K.O.D.O.M.G., the latest endeavour from adventurous guitarist Shane Latimer, typically eclectic and running the gamut from delicately sculpted electro acoustic shapes to gritty streetwise funk. Drummer Shane O’Donovan provides the pulse, Darragh O’KellyDjackulate is the free agent with the turntables, dropping beats and samples that keep the creative axis in constant movement. To send you on your way, a post gig  session in Whelan’s front bar brought to you by Dublin newest creative alliance in jazz, the Prime Collective.

After doing the usual things that 20somethings do, travelling the world amongst other things, Dubliner Richey McCourt decided it was time to collate all the songs he had written over the past few year- whether from previous incarnations of bands to solo projects- and finalize them in what is now christened the Million Dollars.

THREAD PULLS & TWINKRANES

www.whelanslive.com presents

THREAD PULLS &

TWINKRANES

//////// THREAD PULLS Thread Pulls are part rock band, stripped back to a core of drums and bass. Skewed grooves anchor their hypnotic proto-disco sound – kick-drum centred and sub-bass heavy. Roughly cut vocal layers and eastern trumpet-echoes coupling solar-synth-drones bring to mind early elements of future sounds. Having acquired a considerable reputation for their raw, energetic live shows and limited EP releases, they released their debut album New Thoughts to critical acclaim at home and abroad on Irish independent label OSAKA recordings at the end of 2010, followed by extensive touring in Ireland, UK, Europe and Scandinavia. ABOUT NEW THOUGHTS ‘Optimo album of the month, March 2011’ – Monorail Music ’New Thoughts is a receptacle for all sorts of musical history, from 1960s psych to taut post-punk and elemental disco and funk, yet never succumbs to any one ideal enough to derail this singular expedition.’ – Irish Times (4/5) ‘Heavy on percussion, the group have honed their rhythmic edge into a surgical knife…a very lean and focused album…they are obviously riding on the crest of a wave of inspiration.’ – Brainwashed ‘at their core lies an urgent, tribal drumbeat which at once saves them from the encroaching claws of oppressive melancholia and takes them to the rhythmic heights of proto-disco’ Clash Magazine (8/10) ‘like This Heat rearranging their Twilight Furniture for some spirit dancing.’ – 20 Jazz Funk Greats http://www.threadpulls.com /////////// TWINKRANES Twinkranes specialise in coded psychedelia and zone out progressive pop music. In November 2009 the Dublin based electronic outfit released their debut long player – “Spektrumtheatresnakes” to critical acclaim. The LP melds the worlds of motor driven kraut, space rock, psychedelia, drone and avant pop. ABOUT SPEKTRUMTHEATRESNAKES “… a fantastically unhinged mix of speeded-up krautrock rhythms, dirty drones and wonky synthesizers, which is at once weird and danceable and very pop.” 9/10 NME “After four stabs of organ, High Tekk Train Wreck sprints away from the lights with a squeal of wheelspin, its *motorik soundling like a customised and tuned Ford Focus on a suburban *estate rather than a sedately cruising BMW on the autobahns.” 4/5 THE GUARDIAN “Twinkranes have commendably taken it upon themselves to filter Krautrock’s weighty influences through the sensuous prism of pop and dance music.” 4/5 RECORD COLLECTOR “Their debut album is primetime psych rock lunacy, a heart stopping barrage of frenzied krautrock rhythums, extraterrestrial synth strops, technicolored guitars and monster monster grooves.” 4/5 THE IRISH TIMES For those of you that like your music to be intense and cerebral, you’ll love Spektrumtheatresnakes. Despite the multitude of influences, it is a truly unique album, and timeless too. This could’ve been recorded at any point in the last 40 years and it would still sound contemporary, yet futuristic. An exciting and intriguing debut. SUPERSWEET.ORG www.breakingtunes.com/twinkranes http://tuuprong.blogspot.com

SHONEN KNIFE

Japanese Legends

SHONEN KNIFE

30th Anniversary Tour plus special guests SO COW What about this new album then? ‘Super Group’ is the 14th album from Shonen Knife, released in the UK on DAMNABLY. The CD features exclusive artwork and bonus live tracks recorded from their first UK show in 15 years at the Brixton Windmill in 2009. “When I finally got to see them live, I was transformed into a hysterical nine-year-old girl at a Beatles concert.” Kurt Cobain Who are Shonen Knife? The groundbreaking all-female Japanese, pop-punk trio formed in Osaka in 1981, when Naoko first heard late ‘70’s punk-pop like The Ramones.Inspired, the band crafted their own idiosyncratic songs, fashioned brightly coloured outfits and DIY albums. In 1985, K Records released ‘Burning Farm’ in the US. Deals with Sub Pop and various Majors followed. 1989 saw the crème of the alt. rock scene (including Sonic Youth, L7 and Redd Kross) covering their favourite Shonen Knife songs on the tribute album ‘Every Band Has A Shonen Knife Who Loves Them’. They toured with Nirvana (on the ‘Nevermind’ tour), The Breeders and as part of Lollapalooza. They recorded sessions for John Peel and appeared on MTV’s ‘Beavis and Butthead’. Shonen Knife were the first Japanese act to break through to the west, and they remain one of the most influential. Almost 30 years on, a few line- up changes and 15 albums later, they’re still as super-punk-pop rockin and fun as ever. The band will play All Tomorrow’s Parties curated by Matt Groening in May, as well as a UK/Europe Tour. What does it sound like? Infectious, kooky songs on a variety of offbeat topics. From the inevitable ego clashes in a ‘super group’, the misnomer of immortality (‘Pyramid Power’) to the joys of outdoor cooking (‘BBQ Party’). From sugary-pop to uber-heavy rock that sounds like Motorhead in Wonka Land, Super Group is full of youthful exuberance, yet delves into the mysteries of life from deer parks to the nature of stardom. It’s deep, it’s light, it’s super-mental pop-punk ROCK. Totally original and outrageously loveable. What do you need to know about this record? After original member Atsuko retired from the band, ‘Super Group’ marks the return of Shonen Knife to a power trio, with bassist Ritsuko Taneda joining as an official member. The concept of the album is to “go back to the starting point of ROCK” and Naoko’s recent obsession with 70’s UK metal. The result is hyper catchy, cool songs that Jonathan Richman and Black Sabbath would not be ashamed of. Plus they cover Wings’ Jet!-pure fandom, pure fundom in a way that only Shonen Knife can do.
