Singer Shobsy, guitarist Joe Regan drummer Paul Ridgeway and bassist Noel Perry are all students at BIMM Music College in Dublin. The atmosphere at BIMM encourages collaborations and musical friendships to blossom. Bonding over a shared interest in classic 80’s music and a common desire to write big stadium sized songs the guys decided to work on a music project. This early incarnation lead to the formation of State Lights in May 2014.
Progress was immediate and the band quickly decamped to Granard Co Longford to record their first songs in Joe Regan’s home studio. The first result of these sessions was the ‘Breakout’ EP which articulates tales of young love, rejection and hope underpinned by a classic vocal style wrapped around a big atmospheric sound. The EP quickly gained traction and eventually peaked at No 6 in the Irish iTunes Album Charts. Radio support was immediate with the group being selected as ‘Artist of the week’ on the critically acclaimed ‘Totally Irish’ show on 98fm with significant airplay being received on 2FM and TXFM also.
2015 Kicked off in style with a headlining performance at the BT Young Scientist Exhibition before a crowd of 4000 students at Dublin’s RDS arena. They then headlined the ‘Whelan’s Ones to Watch 2015’ Festival before a storming set at the First Fortnight Festival at the Button Factory. The band ended the month by performing as Special Guests (alongside The Riptide Movement) at the prestigious entertainment.ie awards.
The band received their first UK radio play on March 27th when they were selected to appear as ‘Shock of the New’ on the influential Jo Good show on XFM while their first US play arrived through KROQ 106.7 (LA) who played ‘Breakout’ on March 29th. Further airplay was received on Flux FM in Germany and WBOS 92.9 Boston also. The ‘Passport Approved’ radio show which is syndicated to over 25 major stations globally featured the band alongside Kodaline, Hozier and Gavin James as part of a special feature on Irish acts in May.
During the summer the band performed storming sets at both Indiependence and Castlepalooza festivals.
“Dublin’s State Lights show why Irish music is booming in the current climate. A young band armed with some excellent U2-style riffs and a singer possessing both a stunning voice and a magnetic stage presence” (Dublin Concerts)
The band are currently writing and recording material for an EP release slated for February 2016.Already it is easy to understand why critics view State Lights as one of the best new bands in Ireland.
“State Lights – Dublin band whose debut EP “The Breakout” is full of bracing, assured rock/pop tunes and who already have a sound which is aiming for stadiums and arenas. Frontman Shobsy’s voice is one of their key assets, but the musicianship underpinning the songs is also pretty striking at this early stage. The sound of a potentially very large crowd” – Jim Carroll, The Irish Times

Blue Whale are an experimental band from Belfast. To celebrate the launch of their new single and video ‘Jack Irons’ they are playing a small Irish Tour.
“The mathy, jazz-flecked brew hurtles through a thorny tunnel of riffs and percussive flailing – it should be utter chaos, but Blue Whale make it honeyed.” – THE LINE OF BEST FIT
“Blue Whale are steadily earning their stripes as one of the country’s most thoroughly forward-thinking bands of a generation.” – THE THIN AIR
“I really like Blue Whale… they kind of remind me of Albert Ayler playing with a bunch of kids that grew up on Steve Albini records.” – ANDY CAIRNS, THERAPY?
“There aren’t too many “experimental party” contenders around, but even if they were ten-a-penny, we reckon Blue Whale would elliptically battle them off the dance floor with ease.” – HOT PRESS MAGAZINE
“Highly imaginative… exhibiting a meticulous, innovative yet playful style… with a collective eye and two ears towards compositional ingenuity” – AU MAGAZINE
“Wonderfully ordered chaos… post-Rock tinged with Math-Rock sensibilities (Post Rock2 if you will) …it’s exhilarating” – BBC ACROSS THE LINE

The continued evolution of JD & The Straight Shot now sees singer-songwriter Jim Dolan fronting a four-person group as the band explores a stripped-down version of its sound, which is steeped in the quiet fire of Americana, with distinctive elements of the blues and mystical, rustic New Orleans-flavored roots music.
In addition to Dolan, the acoustic vocal group also includes guitarist Marc Copely (Rosanne Cash, McCrary Sisters, Billy Squier), guitarist Aidan Dolan; Kentucky-born bassist Byron House (Robert Plant, Emmylou Harris) and violinist Erin Slaver (Rod Stewart, Trace Adkins, Martina McBride), all of whom also contribute to songwriting.
This revised lineup continues its tour this year with a slate of European festivals, while also working on a follow up to the band’s last album, Where I’ve Been, which was released last year. Produced by Joe Walsh, the 2014 album features several breakthrough singles including “Governor’s Song,” which challenges some of today’s most well-known political figures; “Under That Hood,” a transformative single that tells the tragic story of Trayvon Martin; and “Hard to Find,” which will be featured in the highly-anticipated film, St. Vincent, starring Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy.
Dolan started JD & The Straight Shot in 2000. The band has recorded four additional albums: Midnight Run (2012), Can’t Make Tears (2011), Right On Time (2008), and Nothing To Hide(2005) – as well as an EP, Daily News Blues (2010).
Jim Dolan’s day gig is Cablevision Systems CEO and Executive Chairman of Madison Square Garden, where he also oversees the New York Knicks, Rangers and Liberty. Music is his passion.
“I needed something in my life where I felt like I was actually creating,” says Dolan. “Most of what I do as an executive is orchestrate. I don’t actually set up cable and I don’t really shoot hoops. Music is something I’ve played since I was a kid. Music, for me, is a direct connection between me and the audience.”
JD & The Straight Shot has been covered by The New York Times, New York Post, Billboard, and New York Magazine, among other publications, and performed on “Good Day New York.” Their song “Can’t Make Tears” is the theme song forHell on Wheels, the television drama entering its fifth season on AMC in 2015. Their music has been featured in many films, including St. Vincent and August: Osage County.
The group has opened for the Eagles on several tours, including the “History of the Eagles” tour, the “Summer 2010” tour, and the band’s stadium tour with the Dixie Chicks and Keith Urban. JD & The Straight Shot has also opened for both Joe Walsh and Don Henley’s solo tours, the James Gang reunion tour, and performed at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Austin City Limits.
