with the disc jockeying skills of ANTROPHE

Hands up who wants to Die are four messers who got together in late 2008 to make music that would capture the zeitgeist and inner city pressures of the crumbling society that surrounded them in the Dublin, Ireland. Their songs have been described as “off-kilter noise rock”, and as “socially aware slab punk with constant discordant meanderings” among other things. Roy left and Matt Joined, sensetown united.

RATIONALE:

Hands Up Who Wants To Die are putting on a gig to raise some funds for their third record. After having two releases on the legendary RICHTER COLLECTIVE label, the Dublin quartet are now fending for themselves in the big scary world of MUSIC. After touring SOME OF MAINLAND EUROPE in April of this year the leviathanic ensemble returned to Dublin – their spiritual and actual home – with one devastating intention in mind; to finish writing tunes and get them ‘down on tape’, so to speak. With only two previous BLISTERING live performances in Dublin this short year of nearly seven months, we can honestly say, with no hyperbole whatsoever, that this will be a million times better than any gig that has ever happened! Hands Up Who Wants to Die’s events division have got a tasty and ECLECTIC lineup together so this can only equal to one enduring sentiment = it would be loves if you came along.

CARS LOVE GIRLS

CARS LOVE GIRLS

+ special guests

Dublin’s newest and most exciting musical collaboration comes to us courtesy of brother and sister team Cars Love Girls.

The band features Bres (guitars, vocals) and Orla (vocals), who first worked together for many successful years as part of the Republic of Loose, knocking out two top ten albums in the process. As a founding member of the Loose, Bres co-wrote some of the bands hit singles (YOU KNOW IT, COMEBACK GIRL, THE STEADY SONG, I LIKE MUSIC).

Orla joined as a female vocalist in 2006, while also working hard behind the scenes in the music industry. They toured together extensively in Europe and the U.S, even landing a historical supporting slot with U2 on their 360 tour in Croke Park, Ireland.

Following their career with the Republic of Loose, Bres and Orla put their musical Midas touch to work on an independent project. Combining their shared love of Retro R’n’B and Pop, the duo’s sound developed from a vast array of influences including Prince, Prefab Sprout, Hall & Oates, The Time and Steely Dan.

The product of their efforts has resulted in their breakthrough debut album SKIP SCHOOL, which is a delicious contemporary bite of old school R’n’B.

The 10 track collection was recorded and mixed in Dublin with Phil Hayes (Bell X1, Delorentos), and final touches provided by one of the most prominent names in mastering Bernie Grundman (Carol King’s “Tapestry”, Steely Dan’s “Aja”, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, Prince’s “Purple Rain”).

Stay tuned for adventures in audio wonderment as you are cordially invited to SKIP SCHOOL with Cars Love Girls.

THE TREESLEEPERS

RED MOON BAYONETS

Whelanslive is proud to present a celebration of new Irish music. Every Tuesday will see the upstairs venue play host to a series of the best of new music this country has to offer.Three hand-picked bands showcase their originality, performance and amazingly fresh songwriting skills. It is a great opportunity to see the next round of Irelands unsung and unsigned. ———————- PERMANENT DEJA VU Contrary to what the name suggests, Permanent Deja Vu do not sound like anything you have heard before. They are a creative unit which have been in the making for a long time now, formed when two siblings who grew up together immersed in music, decided to jam. The older, Gavin, a self-taught talent, seemed to have magically acquired the ability to craft songs and like a dream, they have poured out of him since. Taking a strange notion, he decided to bring them to his younger sister, Grace, who received him with much enthusiasm. Much patience was needed, but they eventually got it together, and Grace liked to embellish the songs in any way she could. Playing together was a pleasure, and they learned to tap into each others ideas and a great affinity developed. They delighted in everything from complicated, quirky chord progressions to stripped-down, intimate arrangements. Gavin and Grace quickly decided that they wanted to form a band to bring their songs to a live setting, and to bring something new and exciting to the mix. They asked two musicians they highly respected and always had a connection with, Dave and Facu. They quickly tapped into the songs and made them their own. The band finally felt complete and ready to expose their musical delights to the world. ———————- AMAZING APPLES Amazing Apples formed in 2008. Brothers Cian and Darragh Crehan and drummer Brian Grace had played in bands together in previous years so they already had a musical connection established. Early 2008 saw the introduction of Eanna Fahy, an accomplished fiddle player for his age, and Anthony Ryan who brought an impressive lead guitar sound to the plate. Starting out as a cover band, they quickly gained popularity throughout Ireland with their distinct raw Irish/Americana sound. All the members are multi-instrumentalists incorporating bouzouki, fiddle, mandolin, keyboards, banjos, and whatever else they could get their hands on for their live show. After doing the Irish circuit for two years the band decided to take a new direction and write music. Playing support for people like Sharon Shannon, Mundy and Mumford and Sons at festivals and venues around the country, saw the Apples achieve success on the big stage. Amazing Apples crossed the seas for a tour of New York/New Jearsy in 2010 and Romania in 2012. Since then, they won the Townhouse Bar Battle of the Bands in Galway winning a prize worth 15,000 euros. They launched their debut EP ‘3 or 4 Shoes’ on the 1st of June 2012 in HMV and Monroes in Galway.

THE CITY APPLES

The City Apples are a band of three lads hailing from Blanchardstown in West Dublin, who are all in their early 20’s. The beginnings of the band started with the split of Stone Motion, of which Ger and James were members of. The band enjoyed many good years together which included appearances at Oxegen 2010, and also on RTE’s ‘The Apprentice’. For the want of a new fresh project James and Ger set out searching for a new bassist to complete the trio. In December 2011, Sam joined the band as bassist.

Since then, The City Apples have been writing brand new original songs, brandishing a new sound and hope to make a mark on the original scene with them. They will be entering the recording studio early in April ’12 and look forward to sharing their new sound both at live gigs and across the net!

PETER ROWAN

PETER ROWAN

+   guests   Grammy-award winner and six-time Grammy nominee, Peter Rowan is a bluegrass singer-songwriter with a career spanning over five decades. From his early years playing under the tutelage of bluegrass patriarch Bill Monroe, and following his stint in Old & In the Way with Jerry Garcia and subsequent breakout as both a solo performer and bandleader, Rowan has built a devoted, international fan base through his continuous stream of original recordings, collaborative projects, and constant touring. Born in Wayland, Massachusetts to a musical family, Rowan first learned to play guitar from his uncle. He spent his teenage years absorbing the sights and sounds of the Boston music scene, playing bluegrass at the Hillbilly Ranch and discovering folk and blross the Charles River at the legendary Club 47 on Mt. Auburn Street in Cambridge. “I could sit in with the Lilly Brothers at the Hillbilly Ranch and then catch the MTA and be in time for Joan Baez’s last set at the Club 47. Bluegrass appealed to me. ues ac It was callin’ me—the harmonies, that high and lonesome calling-sound. Don Stover had played banjo with Bill Monroe, fiddler Tex Logan too, before they joined the Lillys. Mandolinist Joe Val taught me all the Blue Sky Boys and the Louvin Brothers songs. I would play a ‘sock-hop’ with my rockin’ group, The Cupids, and then make a beeline for the clubs. Sonny Terry and Brownie Magee, Josh White, Muddy Waters- they all came to town!” Following three years in college, Rowan left academia to pursue a life in music. Rowan began his professional career in 1964 as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for Bill Monroe and The Bluegrass Boys, living in Nashville and playing with Monroe on the Grand Ol’ Opry every week. “One thing I liked about the Monroe style was that there was a lot more blues in it than other styles of bluegrass,” reflects Rowan. “It was darker. It had more of an edge to it. And yet it still had the ballad tradition in it, and I loved that.” Rowan stayed with Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys, touring constantly both in the United States and in England, for two and a half years.” We went from old-timey places way down south to the colleges up north, we played to all ages, long-time fans of Bluegrass and the college kids my own age.” The late ’60s and early 70’s saw Rowan collaborating with musical compatriots in a number of rock, folk and bluegrass combinations: Earth Opera with David Grisman, Sea Train with fiddler Richard Greene (himself a graduate of Monroe’s band) Muleskinner with both Grisman and Greene, former Bluegrass Boy banjoist Bill Keith and the great Clarence White. From the ashes of Muleskinner, Rowan and Grisman went on to join Jerry Garcia, Vassar Clements, and John Kahn, forming the legendary bluegrass band Old & In the Way. It was during this time that Rowan penned the song “Panama Red,” a subsequent hit for the New Riders of the Purple Sage and a classic ever since. Other time-honored compositions by Rowan include ” Moonlight Midnight”, ” In The Land of the Navajo” and “Lonesome L.A. Cowboy”. Jerry Garcia himself recorded Rowan’s “Moonlight Midnight” and the haunting “Mississippi Moon”. The 1970’s also saw Peter Rowan playing and recording alongside brothers Chris and Lorin Rowan as the The Rowan Brothers. Their three albums for Elektra-Asylum featured original songs highlighted by the three siblings soaring harmonies. Rowan subsequently embarked on a well-received solo career in 1978, releasing such critically acclaimed records as Dustbowl Children (a Woody Guthrie style song cycle about humanity’s spirituality in relationship to the earth), Yonder (a record of old-time country songs and Rowan originals in collaboration with ace dobro player, Jerry Douglas) and two extraordinarily fine bluegrass albums, The First Whippoorwill and Bluegrass Boy, as well as High Lonesome Cowboy, a recording of traditional old-time cowboy songs with Don Edwards and guitarist Norman Blake. Rowan’s recent releases- Reggaebilly, a wonderful blend of reggae and bluegrass and Quartet, a recording with the phenomenal Tony Rice, coupled with a relentless touring schedule have further endeared Peter Rowan to audiences around the world. On the road, Rowan performs internationally as a solo singer-songwriter, while stateside he plays in three bands: the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band, a quartet featuring Jody Stecher, Keith Little, and Paul Knight; The Peter Rowan & Tony Rice Quartet; and his rocking band, The Free Mexican Air Force.

SPOOK OF THE THIRTEENTH LOCK

Whelan’s Sounds of Summer & Love Live Music Day present

SPOOK OF THE THIRTEENTH LOCK

WYVERN LINGO

YELLOWBRIDGE

+ guests
Named after a poem about a haunted canal lock, The Spook of the Thirteenth Lock match Irish folk and traditional sounds with more modern experimental rock sounds. With the release of their new album The Brutal Here and Now they have refined their craft, creating melodic folk rock with with a dark, modern feel. They veer away from their peers in tracing a line from the Irish 60’s folk revival through progressive, kraut and post rock. Lyrically springing from English and Irish folk song, the compositions deal with complex themes of personal and national identity, alienation, Irish history and mythology, revolution and the cynical cyclical nature of greed and power. Live they are a powerful five-piece, overlaying intricate folk melodies with swirling squalls of feedback, delay and soaring three-part harmonies. First coming together in Dublin in late 2005, the band was formed by Allen Blighe with the aim of writing songs in the idiom of Irish folk. Gathering friends Enda Bates, Donnchadh Hoey and Brian O’Higgins the band recorded their self-titled debut which was released on Transduction Records in 2008. Since then they have played all over Ireland and Japan. After recruiting fifth member Ronan Hayes they have returned with their sophmore album The Brutal Here and Now in 2012, which widened their sonic palette, taking in Italian and Indian folk influences and sees them singing in English, Irish and Italian. “The Brutal Here and Now is utterly spell-binding…potential Irish album of the year” – Hot Press “The most inventive, audacious and barnstorming Irish album of 2012…brazen, blazing and brilliant” – The Irish Times “Powerful and defiantly unique” – Entertainment.ie “Ireland’s finest example of a modern trad band” – Nialler 9 “This richly rewarding album suggests the spiritual heirs to Planxty and Horslips may have finally been found” – Sunday Business Post ———————————————————————————— Wyvern Lingo are a trio from Bray who have started to make waves on the Irish scene in the last year. Karen Cowley (keys, vocals) Saoirse Duane (guitar, vocals) and Caoimhe Barry (percussion, vocals) have been playing together for the last 5 years. In the last year and half, Caoimhe, Karen and Saoirse have released their debut EP, won the “Rising Stars” competition in the Dublin City soul festivial (2011) and played Irish Festivals such as Knockanstockan, Electric Picnic, Temple House, NPLD, Gateways and Ones to Watch 2012. They are quickly becoming known for their “soulful, powerful vocals and harmonies” and have supported well known acts such as Julliet Turner and Pugwash. With high ambitions for the 2012, Wyvern Lingo are currently working on their debut single, which will be released at the beginning of the summer. ———————————————————————————— Yellowbridge are an indie/pop collaboration made up of Kyle Hyunsung Kim and Ciara Donnelly. The producer/ singer songwriter have been together for a mere few months yet have developed their own sound based on influences stemming from past industry experience. The group hope to bring together the unlikely pairing that is Yellowbridge and create an album that is versatile, surprising and as pleasant as the group themselves (they swear)!

MEGAFAUN

+   guests

Crammed Discs is pleased to release Megafaun, the follow-up to MEGAFAUN’s critically acclaimed, Gather, Form & Fly, which Pitchfork called “ingeniously ramshackle” in a rave review.

To assign the music on Megafaun a genre would be a futile; the band has long been hailed for its diverse musical conversations, but this record creates a unique language all its own. The album’s 14 tracks range from raw, unhurried rock & roll to cacophonous percussive blasts, from brassy instrumental free jazz to mournful delta blues. The band—Joe Westerlund and brothers Phillip and Bradley Cook—recorded the album late last year at April Base in Fall Creek, Wisconsin, the studio of former bandmate Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), and produced it themselves along with BJ Burton.

The album opens with Real Slow, a bold and emotional statement about the group and its roots. From there the record unfolds in a million directions, moving beyond the back porches of Americana into wholly new and uncanny sonic territory, where gorgeous, earthy melodies blossom into unsettling time signatures and swirling electronic soundscapes.

MEGAFAUN’s roots reach back to Eau Claire, WI, USA the hometown of all three members. With Justin Vernon they formed the band DeYarmond Edison and moved to North Carolina. That band broke up in 2006, but from its ashes rose Bon Iver and MEGAFAUN, two of the most critically acclaimed indie projects in music today. Over the course of two previous LPs and one EP, the band has toured the United States & Europe with The Mountain Goats, Bowerbirds, Akron/Family, and more. SPIN raved that MEGAFAUN’s last full-length, Gather, Form & Fly, was “epic,” while Mojo extolled that it “provoke[s] wows and crikeys of crooked pleasure.”

The prestigious Duke University recently commissioned MEGAFAUN to create and perform Sounds of the South, a concert based on the rural folk songs collected by ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax during his early travels. The trio reimagined the music through their own brand of experimental Americana and collaborated with Richmond’s Fight the Big Bull avant-jazz ensemble, acclaimed songwriter Sharon Van Etten, and Vernon on the project, which was presented for three nights in Durham and again at Cincinnati’s MusicNOW Festival to raves.

The band was built by brothers Brad and Phil Cook and fellow Eau Claire, Wisconsin native Joe Westerlund from the ashes of DeYarmond Edison, the group they had formed with longtime friend Justin “Bon Iver” Vernon.

Megafaun are part of that rare breed of young artists driven by an unquenchable thirst for a wide range of sounds and styles. Pick a song at random, and don’t be surprised to hear delicate Appalachian banjo figures, tumbling Steve Reich pianos, sumptuous multi-part harmonies or bracing, string-scraping dissonance…

The unique mixture of songcraft and improvisational spirit Megafaun have grown to command. While very much at ease with several strains of American folk music, they’re masterfully reinventing tradition by infusing it with radically alien elements.

Crammed Is pleased to offer three recordings from this remarkable group: Gather, Form & Fly, Heretofore, and the latest self titled release, Megafaun.

FESTIVAL OF THE CHARIOTS BENEFIT GIG

Festival of the Chariots Benefit Gig featuring

NURSERY CRYMES

THE TECTONICS

THE LOFIRES

KING MODO

Festival of the Chariots (Rathayatra) is a huge festival for Lord Krishna and His devotees. An extraordinary chariot festival that originates in Jagannatha Puri on the east coast of India and dates back over 2,000 years.

Everyone chants the Hare Krishna maha-mantra and dances in ecstacy as Krishna in His most merciful form of Jagannatha is pulled along on a huge wooden cart.

In Puri, there are three carts (chariots), one for each of the Deities of Jagannatha, Subhadra, and Balarama. In Dublin, Sri Sri Jaganath Baladeva Subhadra share a single cart.

Jaganath is a name for Krishna meaning Lord of the Universe. Balarama is Krishna’s brother and Subhadra, His sister. The English loanword juggernaut in the sense of “a huge wagon carrying Lord Jaganath” is inspired by the Rathayatra festival.

At the end of the procession, there is a big gathering of devotees with feasting, stalls and spiritual entertainment.

On Wednesday August 8th, we’re holding a benefit gig for the 2012 Rathayatra festival in Dublin. More details to follow…

So, we hope to see you at the benefit gig and make sure to come to Sri Sri Jaganth, Baladeva and Subhadra’s Rathayatra festival in Dublin this September.

Jaya Jaganath, Baladeva, Subhadra!!

THE FLAWS

THE FLAWS

+   Heritage Centre   The Flaws release ‘Let’s Fight’ on iTunes on July 6th and mark the occasion with a Dublin date in Whelans. The Flaws exploded onto the Irish music scene in late 2007 when their debut long player ‘Achieving Vagueness’ was released to universal critical acclaim. It entered the Irish Top 20 and lead to both Choice and Meteor nominations. Having toured the debut for over 18 months solid playing some amazing shows across the country including memorable sets at Glastonbury, Electric Picnic ’08 and Oxegen the band took a well deserved break. In October 2010 the band released their new album ‘Constant Adventure’. This much anticipated second album was recorded at Tumbleweed Studios in Dundalk, was self produced and mixed and engineered by Jason Varley. The end result showcased just how much The Flaws have grown as a band, track after track boasts beautiful harmonies and dazzles with glittering guitars. With the departure of original bass player Dane McMahon in early 2012 the band were compelled to look themselves squarely in the eye. They did what they have always done best. They sat down and wrote some dazzling new songs. One of these was Let’s Fight and working with producer Rob Kirwan over the course of a couple of days in late May the band beat, welded and angle-ground the raw material of the song into their toughest, punchiest (excuse the pun) track to date. Under an exterior made from solid muscle the hallmarks of the band’s sound are there, Colin Berrill’s relentless drum attack, Paul mallon’s pulsing bass, the soaring harmonies, and the sumptuous melodic interplay between Paul Finn and Shane Malone’s guitars. With more fantastic songs in their arsenal it’s safe to say that The Flaws are back and this time the gloves are off. The Flaws launch ‘Let’s Fight’ with a show in Whelan’s on Friday 6th July.   What the Press Say: ‘a sumptuous slice of classy pop rock’ Jackie Hayden Hot Press ‘Such grace and elegance doesn’t come without the careful nurturing of creative aspirations’ Jackie Hayden Hot Press Constant Adventure…………….’is a hugely confident step forward……..’ Lauren Murphy Irish Times *** ‘a serious of delightful radio friendly pop songs that ………..sound fresh and beguiling’, Eamon Carr The Herald ‘The Flaws deserve to be heard’, Eamon Carr The Herald

MIDNIGHT HOUR – CANJA RAVE

featuring –

CANJA RAVE

Upstairs@Whelan’s from Midnight. Doors: 11:30pm “Canja Rave are a big-sound duo who wear rock references in spades – drawing comparisons to Raveonettes, Pixies and Sonic Youth at their SXSW debut last year.” (Shelley Lee Jones – Huck Magazine – London, U.K) “If The White Stripes had made some babies, Canja Rave would be the black sheep of the family.” (Flo Hayler – Visions Magazine, Fritz Radio, and owner of The Ramones Museum – Berlin, Germany) “…this is the same composition as another famous band, and make the obvious observation that the primary difference is that Canja Rave has a drummer that can actually play drums… big garagey sound, huge for a two-piece and a hell of a stage presence…” (Ryan Cooper – Punk Music Guide – Detroit, U.S.A) “Canja Rave makes rock music full of personality, with creative sounds and lyrics.” (Cinthya Oliveira – Jornal Hoje em Dia – Belo Horizonte, Brazil) Bold and fun. Tough and funny. Loud and heartfelt. Paula Nozzari and Chris Kochenborger form Canja Rave, a powerful and melodic rock duo for whom no obstacle is big enough to detract them from the commitment to live life thru their music. Following their intense and successful touring of the US and Europe between 2008 and 2010, and their move to Europe in 2011, Canja Rave begins 2012 by releasing their third album, “Dirty Shoes, Balls and Old Songs”, recorded at their new base town of Berlin, Germany, and mixed in the US, at the Nuthouse Recording, NJ. The album contains 9 new original songs featuring Paula’s quintessential power drumming and Chris’ to the point guitar riffs, all sustaining catchy melodies and English lyrics ranging from sarcastic social and political comments (“Never Ready for a War”) to endearing (“Ducks”) and humorous (“So Lucky”) introspective snapshots with a twist, often inspired by the band’s unusual experiences during their US tours (“Accident”). The album was produced and recorded by New York based producer Alvaro Alencar, who has been awarded 10 Latin Grammy awards to date, and works eclectically with artists from all origins and styles. “Dirty Shoes, Balls and Old Songs” powerful sounding tracks with their natural ambiences and original sonic signature reflect the live energy that elevates the spirit of the fans in Canja’s live performances. Chris’ vocals are edgy, as is his guitar sound, and Paula brings along with her no nonsense power drumming the beautiful countermelodies which she performs on the melodica. As a lonely and very inspired outside contribution, the title track brings in Hique Gomez and his enticing violin which boldly challenges the main melody in a sonic rush of energy. Canja Rave’s 2008 debut album, “Da Canja a Rave” (Portuguese lyrics) and its follow-up release “Badango” (also with Portuguese lyrics and produced by Detroit icon Jim Diamond of The White Stripes fame) were the previous landmarks in a 6 years career that took the band to over 200 live performances, in 3 continents, over 100 of them in the USA (30 states and 23,000 km, plus Canada). In Europe, CR performed in England, Germany, Scotland, Spain, France, The Netherlands, Norway, Czech Republic, Italy, Switzerland… and of course they found some time to perform in their homeland Brazil.. Extensive touring and 3 albums in 4 years are not the only feat in Canja Rave’s joyful ride. The band received two prizes in 2010, from the Sonicbids website for South by Southwest and for Songwriting at The Music Think Tank Festival in Milan, Italy, and were also acclaimed by many fans and supporters in multiple festival appearances: Dfest 2009 (Tulsa – Oklahoma), South by Southwest – SXSW 2009 and 2010 (Austin – Texas), United Islands 2011 (Praha – Czech Republic), Liverpool Sound City 2009 and 2011 (Liverpool – UK), The Music Think Tank 2010 (Milan – Italy), The Metro Times Blowout 2010 (Hamtramck – Detroit, Michigan), Motorcity Special #1 (Detroit, Michigan), Grito Rock 2009 and 2011 (South America), Rec Beat 2007 (Recife – Brazil), Fête de La Musique 2011 (Berlin – Germany). With the new record ready to be delivered to the fans, Canja Rave is eager to show their recent explorations in the one place they feel truly at home: on the road.

CHOKING VICTIM

CHOKING VICTIM NYC Anarcho Ska-Punk – Choking Victim broke up in 1999, on the day they recorded their album ‘No Gods, No Masters’ for Hellcat Records. Since they had never toured in Europe, frontman Stza will be touring the UK, Ireland and France with the backing of Dublin Ska/Punk band Chewing on Tinfoil, exclusively playing the songs of Choking Victim.

CHEWING ON TINFOIL

Take some guys. Add a handful of instruments and sprinkle with a mess of influences, and you’ve managed to make Chewing on Tinfoil. Rinse and repeat vigorously for three years in a cottage built on the burial site of an ex-communicated, fornicating monk, and the result is a band that play music they like. Enjoy responsibly.

The guys are set to release their new EP ‘When You’ve Made It’ this summer, which has already gained recognition through their new single ‘Functions’, notching up 1,000 plays in 3 days.

Starting to make a name for themselves internationally with music lovers, they have already booked more recording time and are working hard on new material.
