——————-

The Bambir have gathered their childhood appreciation for hard rock and smuggled vinyl, Armenian traditional music and poetry, pulsing beats and whirling trances, ancient tales and pagan wails and pumped it into their own unique sound. Even though they’ve only been in Ireland for a few months, they’re already causing a stir with their music, their tribal nature, and their beards.

The sounds of Narek Barseghyan (song-writer, vocals, guitar), Arman Kocharyan (bass guitar, vocals), Arik Grigoryan (song-writer, flutes and woodwinds, vocals, percussion), and Vardan Paremuzyan (drums, percussion, vocals) are hard to describe. They’ve heard it all- “Armenian metal with flutes!” “Combination Led Zeppelin and Gogol Bordello!” “Folk-rock, but loud! Really loud!” “Mars Volta punching Jethro Tull in the face!”  Narek prefers to call it Archive Rock- taking a little piece of everything from the history of rock ‘n’ roll. “An artist’s job is to search,” Narek says, basing his lyrics in metamorphosis and the imitation of reality or your imperfect idea of it.

THE PALE

THE PALE

“I Woke Up And I Was Gone” Album Launch

+ THE GANDHIS

If you try to calculate the amount of music that calls on you to listen to it, you might feel the need to retreat to the nearest cave in order to escape it. Between the deluge of online chatter and most of what you’re force fed on too many radio stations to mention, it’s no wonder that sometimes the best music gets lost, and no surprise that sometimes the best bands get forgotten about.

20 years ago, The Pale made their major label debut with Here’s One We Made Earlier, an album that introduced a band that, from then to now, has succeeded in blindsiding their audience with music that is equal parts eminently melodic and utterly singular. “I’m not good at focusing on the commercial aspects of music and trends,” says The Pale’s lead singer and main songwriter, Matthew Devereux

Therein lays not only the pleasure for the creative spirit but also the problem for the accountants. Inevitably, The Pale’s tenure on the major label didn’t last too long, and so began a number of years where the band (in effect, Matthew and multi-instrumentalist Shane Wearen) soldiered on. Albums you’ve probably never seen stocked in record shops – Cheapside (1996), Cripplegate (1997), Spudgun (1998) – were released in parts of Europe you’ve probably never been to. The band even changed their name to Produkt, under which name more albums were released to further rippling waves of unawareness.

The aim, essentially, was to retain credibility. “I was inspired by artists whose careers I’ve followed through the years, and I take rather earnestly my inspirations from people who didn’t follow contrived commercial interests,” says Matthew of his cunning but not necessarily financially rewarding plan. “I didn’t want us to be revealed as such, because if you go for the quick buck it very rarely works out.” Back then, he admits, he took what was essentially anti-commercialism to extremes: “I wanted The Pale to have a cult-like following.”

At this stage – cult-like following achieved – Matthew admits to barely eking out a living. Gigging, he remarks, provided the financial wherewithal for him. Shane, meanwhile, played music and taught web design. “I was involved in various different projects that mostly crashed and burned!,” he says. “When The Pale isn’t operative, I play music; yet whenever I go away from music I always veer back towards it after a month or two.”

Call it resilience (compulsion, even), but such a stance is so innate that it becomes part of the creative DNA. And so – without a nod to either popularity or profitability – The Pale carried on. Matthew and Shane admit that while they couldn’t get to grips with the often mercurial nature of the music industry, they still wanted to make musical statements.

“For us to get albums released in even one European territory was a victory,” comments Matthew. “My ambition was obviously not for The Pale to become smaller, but it seemed that we were just out of tandem with the industry, particularly in Ireland.”

The stakes, such as they were, had also gotten too high for The Pale. By the mid-‘90s music acts had to have a financial outlay. “We could go to the table,” recalls Matthew, “we could pull off a poker face and play a game, but we didn’t have the money to put into the pot.”

Yet The Pale refused to fold – “quite simply, myself and Shane have been designed to do what we do.” The frustrating part was that each time they released a new album, virtually everything “was reflected back to our early records and the cheeky chappie image we had back then. We, on the other hand, had been developing, maturing, changing.”

Which more or less brings us bang up to date. Developing, maturing, changing – these are crucial patterns for anyone, let alone creative types. What was paramount for the band, reveals Matthew, was gaining a broader education and the justified notion of an artist “chasing a masterpiece”, which he admits, “is the ignition for my ambition.”

Some people might think such a quest unwise, but there’s no doubting the validity of it. The past five years has seen two albums – The Contents Of A Shipwreck (2007) and Proper Order (2009) – continue The Pale’s pilgrimage for perfection. New album, I Woke Up And I Was Gone, sees the band reach out and grasp it. The album features a dozen beautifully measured songs that nudge the parameters of lo-fi pop/folk – nugget-sized and gem-like, charming tracks such as Company Of Wolves, It Should Be Illegal, The Boy With The Antlers, Hanging Around Airports and An Autograph For My Dad highlight the casual simplicity of perfect pop.

Coming from the pen of a man who cheerfully admits to once being too cerebral for his own good, the new album is a pithy, often poignant departure. “I feel guilty about how indirect or obscure I may have been about certain things,” says Matthew with a wry grin. “We suddenly found the drive again to make the music far more accessible, more direct. I had realised we needed to be. Back in the day, my youthfulness and aggression got in the way of looking for clarity.”

The new songs – largely written over the past three years while Matthew was based in Prague – are based on truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. “When I was younger I wanted the music to do different things, one of which wasn’t the kind of truth that I feel we’ve stitched though The Pale’s work in the past five years. I’ve realised, ultimately, that truth has freed me.” The feedback to this sense of directness has taken Matthew by surprise. “The more honest I was the more I connected with it. The idea that I can be so direct and that people are open-hearted to it is something I never expected.”

‘Roll down the window, throw away the plot…’, sings Matthew on It Should Be Illegal, one of the album’s many highlights. The lyric could well be The Pale’s new modus operandi – after over 20 years of working through life’s stuff and nonsense, it seems they have come to realise, finally, that less is more.

“It’s about everything in its right measure,” reasons Matthew. “I could never understand why some people I know would spend 12 years to be a brain surgeon. But now? Now I totally get it.”

DEREK ELLARD, THE OURZ & DEM FOOLS

Whelan’s Newest Music Night

TUESDAYS | 3 BANDS | €5

DEREK ELLARD

THE OURZ

DEM FOOLS

Whelanslive is proud to present a celebration of new Irish music. Every Tuesday will see the upstairs venue play host to a series of the best of new music this country has to offer.Three hand-picked bands showcase their originality, performance and amazingly fresh songwriting skills. It is a great opportunity to see the next round of Irelands unsung and unsigned.

———————-

The OurZ

The OurZ are a four piece unsigned Rock band from Balbriggan in North County Dublin. The OurZ have been churning out a steady stream of original material that can be described as hard hitting, melodic, dirty rock. The Current line up have already enjoyed successful gigs in The Village, Whelans, Sweeneys and The Mezz in Temple Bar. In Gerard Smith The OurZ have a charismatic and confident frontman who is also the main lyricist in the the band. Shane Kinsella is a gifted guitarist whose imaginative riffs are usually the starting point in the song writing process for the band. Bassist Gary Healy has played in various different cover & original bands since 1988. He joined The OurZ in 2010. Drummer Timmy “Drink” Berger is the newest member of the band. A savage Rock drummer with a pure Rock & Metal background.

———————-

DEM FOOLS

The beauty of having a 6 piece band is the range of tastes and influences that encompasses each night’s rehearsals. Take a piece of Rock, merge it with some reggae, smooth it out with some Blues, and then you might just come close to what Skerries band, DEM FOOLS are all about. To cut your teeth as a new original band in Dublin these days, means taking on and challenging knowledgeable muso’s in some of the capitals most respected venues. DEM FOOLS have now notched up a favourable and supportive following in some of these venues in 2011, and are continuing to build upon this greenshoot support into 2012. Having already risen to the challenge of playing Whelans, The Grand Social, King Kong Club, Dimestore and many more, the hard work of establishing a groundswell is well under way.
With Irelands burgeoning Festival scene a melting pot of new talent, it gets harder and harder to establish a following, and stand out from the plethora of mundanity which is unfortunately becoming the norm at some of the countries larger festivals. One thing that DEM FOOLS don’t do however, is mundane. With soaring vocals, an eclectic mix of guitars, tin whistle, keyboard, ukelele, drums, melodica and lots more, the scope of DEM FOOLS musical abilities – as well as an ability to knock out catchy and contagious tunes – is positively limitless.

Derek Ellard

Originally from Tipperary town. A Singer/songwriter with a difference, utilizing a loop station to create multi layered guitars, vocals and live percussion…. the guitar is the only instrument that accompanies this powerful, husky voice. speaking every level, given the depth of emotion and life experience poured into it. Heavily influenced by his roots in post hardcore and rock… this acoustic blend of melodic and intricate guitar in the forefront and dark, swelling rythm is captivating and original.

ReClaim “Keep it Down This show launches the brand new E.P by one of the hardest working bands in Ireland. The music will blow you mind and the songs will leave you breathless. Reclaim play high energy rock with a progressive indie flavor that possesses the audience into the ReClaim trance. They flythrough the normal haunts of Dublin like a tornado removing trailer parks. Though the music lends it’s self heavily on prog-rock it steals the groove from some of the greatest funk all-stars. Imagine you put Rush, Yes, Grand Daddy , Peter Tosh into a glass jar and toss it into the uncertainty of Niagara falls. ReClaim are : Glenn Brady Guitars and Vox, Aran O’Malley drums and percussion, Graham Tully bass. http://www.reclaimmusic.com ______________________________  Chayka are a six piece soul/funk band from Kildare, Dublin & Offaly. Since settling on a line-up in the summer of 2010 Chayka have been gigging, writing and recording and are currently putting the final touches on their self produced debut album which they plan releasing this summer. Their live shows have been described as dynamic, high energy and uplifting, a mix of solid rhythms, powerful vocals and catchy hooks, live highlights to date have included Knockanstockan 2011, Dublin Soul Festival and the Rathmines Festival Under the Clock. Chayka are: Emilene Kavanagh: Vocals Sean De Burca, Ric Panza: Guitars Alison Reynolds: Piano, Sax Ken Richmond: BassJonny Kelly: Drums ______________________________________ Fred and Bob – Anti-Gravity Love E Contrary to what the name may suggest, Fred and Bob is actually a Dublin based, four-piece alternative band consisting of three girls and one boy. The hard working band has played numerous venues and festivals around Dublin and Ireland including typically energetic performances at Electric Picnic 2011 and the inaugural Camden Crawl Dublin 2012. Fred and Bob will launch their second EP “Anti-Gravity Love” on 15th June. The EP recorded by Ian McNulty (Ambience Affair, Henrietta Game, Villagers) will be available as a free download from the Fred and Bob Bandcamp. To support the release, the band will play the following tour dates across the country: 15 June – Citog @ Cellar Bar, Galway 19 June – Whelans 30 June – Auntie Annies, Belfast Since 2009 Fred and Bob have consistently received strong radio support. The debut single Hex You received airplay on BBC 6 Music, 2FM, Phantom FM and Today FM. The follow up On a Good Day… EP led to a commendation from Jim Carroll (Irish Times), further airplay from Rory McConnell (BBC Radio 1) and a studio session for Dan Hegarty (2FM). The bands most recent single, Caramel Back, cemented their position on national radio with widespread airplay on 2FM, Today FM and Phantom FM in Ireland. Growing international interest was also evident with airplay in the UK, Netherlands and the US. Fred and Bob have been dubbed an “act to watch” by Dan Hegarty of 2FM and aim to deliver on that tag with their new EP and live performances this year. ————————————– RORY BOWENS
Rory Bowens is a Singer/Songwriter from Balrath, Co. Meath. In the last few years he has played venues from Navan to London, supporting The Walls, Oisin Leech (The Lost Brothers) and Jimmy Monaghan (Music For Dead Birds) among others. His song ‘Bits and Pieces’ has recently received air play on RTÉ 2FM, 2XM and I-Radio. He has also recently added a live band of Brian C. Kelly on Bass and brother Dónal Bowens on Drums and things have gotten substantially noisier. Rosa Nutty will be joining the band on the night.
————————————– Dan Hegarty (2FM): “Dublin’s Fred & Bob are not a duo just in case you’re wondering. They do however have a habit of writing the kind of songs that The Breeders, Sleater Kinney and Veruca Salt would have given their eye teeth for during the 90s! It’s not all retrospective though, these guys and girls have an energy that is so infectious.” Jim Carroll – The Ticket (Irish Times): “making fuzzy, punky, energetic pop with loads of likeable throwback ’90s indie edges. EP ‘On a good day…’ will make you twist and shout!” HotPress Magazine: “Imagine a slightly roughed-up Jades mashed with a nastier Blondie and you’re getting close. In Emma Greenhalgh they have a fearsome vocalist.” Phil Udell (State Magazine): “Very Rock. Very Good.”

Ziggy The Rabbit is: Kieran Murphy – Bass, backing vocals, keyboards & production, Ricky Cunningham – Guitar & Vocals, Luke Cunningham- Lead vocal, guitar & percussion, Josh Cautley -Vocals, guitar, everything. We’re a four piece recording band who rarely gig. We concentrate really hard on the sounds we make and we make them in pretty primitive recording conditions. Ya might say we’re a bit delusional, and at times we are, but when ya work hard and stretch your talents to the limit sometimes folks listen. Our music could be defined as ‘Trippy Folk’ but we’re inspired by a bunch of different people so genres don’t matter to us once we’re truckin’. We’ve recorded our first EP ‘Winter’ and are workin’ pretty hard on a new project with the working title ‘Ocean Catastrophe Documentary’. We’ll be accompanied on the night by Rosa Nutty.

The RagMen
The Ragmen started out playing country music to a confused Electric
Picnic Audience in 2010. They gradually began to perform our own
material in venues around Dublin and around the country including the
Grand Social and Whelans and again at Electric Picnic ’11.
They have just released our debut E.P. which was recorded live, over two
days in Start Together Studios, Belfast.
They draw on the wealth of roots and folk music for inspiration, from
Tommy Makem to Nick Cave. We put a lot of emphasis on playing live and
enjoy exploring the songs in front of a crowd.

TRISTAN CARROLL

KNOTS

CALI

Whelans New Music is a series of shows each week that embraces the amazing new music in Ireland. Each week see’s the best in up and coming in the country perform. Expect to be blown away!

Thank you for supporting local music. ———————- Tristan Carroll

Rathangan singer-songwriter, Tristan Carroll started playing guitar at the age of 11 and has become inseparable from the instrument ever since! His early influences leaned towards the heavier side of the musical spectrum, eventually tending more towards the mainstream, infused with a love for harmonies and improvisation that continues to this day.

Tristan played, and continues to play, electric guitar in numerous cover and original bands in the Kildare area, until discovering artists like Newton Faulkner, Michael Hedges, Andy McKee etc, who used the body of the acoustic guitar to create a whole new set of musical sounds, and deciding “that’s what I want to do!” It is this modern fingerstyle approach to guitar that forms the basis for many of Tristan’s songs, coupled with a fondness for music that grooves and an ear for melodic hooks.

In the past year, Tristan has shared stages with some of Ireland’s greatest up and coming artists, including Seven Days, The Barley Mob, Fox E and the Good Hands, The Fitzafrenic, Storyfold, King Modo and Delorentos, among others, as well as receiving praise from idol and fellow artist, Newton Faulkner, for his cover of the Talking Heads track “Psycho Killer”.

Tristan’s debut EP, My Right Hand, is now available on itunes!http://itunes.apple.com/ie/album/my-right-hand-ep/id470122929

“Nice playing man!” – Newton Faulkner

“Tristan Carroll is an integral part of the world of slappy-tappy acoustic abuse” – Elliott Morris

After touring and honing their trades in various other projects (both Nationally and Internationally), the members of KNOTS, Botham (Vox/Guitar), Eddie (Drums) and Ciaran (Bass) came together with a vision of creating something unique, something special if you will. Formed in January 2012 and taking inspiration from such bands as Pearl Jam, U2 and Jeff Buckley, the band have taken that sound and nurtured it into what you hear toda. A hook filled trio of rock that will get your heart singing and your feet dancing. Botham delivers powerful vocals mirrored with hooky guitars while Eddies groove laden drums drive the band forward with Ciarans pounding bass cementing it altogether. The outcome is un mistakenlyKNOTS. Already creating a buzz from live shows, the bands energetic, room shaking gigs are fast pacing them along and gaining the attention of music lovers and making them new fans in the process. 3 months into their very short career and having spent countless hours writing, gigging, and recording and the fruits of the bands labour, blood, sweat and tears can be heard in the band’s debut E.P. Thank you for supporting local music. ———————-   Odd Socks Revival Oddsocks Revival are a hardworking four piece funk-rock and blues band in their mid 20’s. These Dublin based Sligo musicians have been touring Ireland relentlessly since 2009, putting a unique and modern edge on to a classic 70’s rock/funk style. Their use of unusual four part vocal harmonies and four lead vocalists sets them apart, while songs that incorporate soulful yet cheeky hip-hop influenced hooks to a funked out classic rock sound is their niche. www.oddsocksrevival.com   ———————-   Joao & Overseas Overseas is a new-age, rock band formed in Dublin in 2011. The band took this name in reference with its multinational members’ origins and their unique eclectic and epic sound. João Páris developed an intimate and deep musical personality throughout his teenage years in Portugal and his life experiences in Spain and Ireland. Inspired by Dublin’s multicultural and music scene he was the house pianist of several venues including the popular Café en Seine where he first performed his original work. He was joined by French musicians Rui Sanches (guitars) who was previously wandering around in Australia and later by Geoffrey Piesen (drums and percussion) an experienced drummer who had moved from Paris to Dublin to explore new paths. Finally, Brazilians Causio Marini (bass) and Alexandre Manenti (keyboards) brought an eclectic and solid background from the other side of the Atlantic to empower the powerful message crafted in Overseas music. Overseas evoke awareness and reflection as their songs combine deep melodies, rich arrangements and surprising progressions. The quintet has played in several venues including the Centre for Creative Practices, the Submarine and the Village. Currently, the five piece band is working on their EP to be released this Summer which will include some charismatic songs including “Closer” already recognized by their public to have an impressive identity and power. They are also planning concerts abroad including Portugal and France. www.facebook.com/officialoverseas www.youtube.com/user/OverseasOfficial www.breakingtunes.com/overseas ———————- The Makings The Makings formed in early 2011, when artists Barry Shock and Rick Burn teamed up to work on original material. Soon thereafter, while seeking a rhythm section, drummer Paddy Reynolds and bassist Johnny McGee joined the outfit, and shortly later the first demo arrived, followed by the first live performance at the Finn Fladh festival in Donegal. Coming from various musical backgrounds every member brought something unique to the table, with lots of influences ranging rom Pink Floyd to Gomez and from Kasabian to The Black Keys. The band played a variety of gigs throughout the remainder of 2011, while two music videos were commissioned by Jump Films. The beginning of 2012 have seen the departure of bassist Johnny McGee and the arrival of Shane Keeley. The Makings then resumed gigging around Dublin and made an appearance at 96fm. Having been currently working intensively in the studio the band are expecting to release their debut EP in the early summer 2012. www.soundcloud.com/themakingsmusic www.facebook.com/themakings

FRANCESCA MARTINEZ

Whelanslive.com presents

FRANCESCA MARTINEZ

+ Guests

Francesca performed the show at the Edinburgh Fringe 2011 where she received rave reviews across the board, played to packed houses and won a Fringe Network Award. The show was also a hit in Australia earlier this year where she completed a 52-date tour of Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne. Francesca has mild cerebral palsy (she prefers to call herself ‘wobbly’) and is one of the UK’s top comedians. Her unique brand of comedy is both universal and hard-hitting, challenging perceptions and preconceptions. The show is ‘hilarious and deeply moving… one of the finest pieces of writing on the Fringe’ ***** (Metro 2011). Francesca is well-known for her starring role in ‘Extras’ opposite Kate Winslet and Ricky Gervais. She has toured internationally with sell-out performances in Hollywood, New York, Montreal, Dublin, Cape Town, Singapore, KL and at the World Economic Forum in Davos, alongside Emma Thompson. Francesca was Richard Herring’s special guest on his Radio 4 series “Richard Herring’s Objective” last Autumn which received an unprecedented amount of praise and was chosen for “Pick Of The Week” on Radio 4.
EDINBURGH 2011 “She is not only one of the best performers on the circuit but also a writer of rare candour” 5 stars Metro Scotland “Wonderfully challenging… brilliantly busts myths about normality” 4 Stars The Scotsman “Martinez releases line after line of observant wit… An intelligent, charismatic comic” 4 stars The Skinny “A compelling comedian…her show is insightful and packed with laughs. LAU

Whelanslive.com presents

LAU

+ MOSSY NOLAN

Winner of ‘Best Group’ in BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2008, 2009 & 2010

Winner of ‘BEST LIVE ACT’ Scots Trad Music Awards 2009

This generation’s most inventive folk band return with new tours and energetic performances for 2012

‘Quite frankly, the best band in the world right now’ – Channel 4

“…a band who want to diversify beyond their original ideals, to stretch the word “folk” past its humble origins and bring it kicking and screaming into the 21st Century” – The Liminal

Young Scots/English trio Lau combine stunning musicianship with a ground-breaking yet playful approach to traditional music that draws as much from leftfield rock and jazz as it does celtic folk music. Prepare to be wowed by the wildly inventive Martin Green on accordian and effects, Aidan O’Rourke’s impossibly beautiful fiddle playing, Kris Drever’s virtuoso guitar and honeyed baritone voice, as well as the unique chemistry and banter between the three.

“Lau are so special” – **** The Guardian

In 2004, sat around a kitchen table in Edinburgh, Lau took their first musical steps. Now, to have achieved so much, in so few years, is staggering. The warmth and excitement they generate with each new release, and at every live gig, has culminated in armfuls of plaudits, including three consecutive years of being crowned ‘Best Group’ at the BBC Radio Two Folk Awards from 2008, to 2010.

Their strength partly lies in the pool of knowledge they draw on: Kris Drever grew up on Orkney and is celebrated for his singing and guitar playing – his talents as an accompanist have been sought by folk stars such as Kate Rusby. A well loved performer in his own right, his first solo album, ‘Black Water’, landed him the Horizon Award for ‘Best Newcomer’ at the 2007 BBC Folk Awards..

Award-winning fiddler and composer, Aidan O’Rourke (‘Instrumentalist of the Year’: 2006 Scots Trad Music Awards), hails from the Scottish coastal town of Oban. A founder member of Blazin’ Fiddles, Aidan is a major talent and is in high demand from musicians such as Eddi Reader and Alyth McCormack.

Martin Green, is from south of the border and East Anglia raised. A true maverick, he is in constant demand for his accordion playing and has toured in the bands of Eliza Carthy, Joan Baez, Linda Thompson and many other great names of folk music. Green was short-listed for the BBC’s coveted ’Musician Of The Year’ in the 2008 Folk Awards. He is also someone who revels in experimentation.

In front of an audience the trio are renowned for pushing their compositions and each other to new heights. With seemingly telepathic musical communication, ten minute epics will be infused with a spectrum of emotion: the perfect foil for Kris’s poignant vocal numbers and some eminently quotable stage banter. Their talents are also being recognised in the mainstream: MOJO magazine commissioned a version of ‘Dear Prudence’ for a Beatles related cover mounted CD.

+ St Yorda

“Their shoegaze-by-way-of-Ash-meets-Adebisi squall gives us the chills…one of the best live bands up-and-coming in the country. – Mike McGrath-Bryan, Drop-D.ie “Agitate the Gravel wear their influences most visibly on their sleeves, sounding like the genetically-blessed lovechild of Weezer and My Bloody Valentine.”  – Nicola Byrne, Goldenplec.com They were once Agitate the Gravel but grew tired of leaving everywhere in a hurry and decided instead to terrorise the population as Terror Pop! Cork’s Terror Pop released two acclaimed singles under their former title of Agitate the Gravel and hope to put forward their best foot yet in the form of new single, ‘Wait’; a strident and urgent pop firecracker that oozes melody like an oil spill, the single will be released on April 2nd. ‘Wait’ is the band’s third release in an 18-month spell that has seen the group travelling relentlessly across the country and sharing bills with the likes of punk-rock godfather Mike Watt as well as upcoming Irish acts such as R.S.A.G, Jogging, Fighting With Wire and the Ambience Affair. The band also featured on Whelan’s ‘Ones to Watch for 2012′ showcase as well as Hotpress’ ‘Freezer Sessions’. ‘Wait’ will be available on limited CD in selected record stores, as well as digitally on Bandcamp, and will come packaged with the exclusive b-side ‘Incomprehensible’.
