RISING APPALACHIA

plus support _ Main Venue _ Facebook event Rising Appalachia brings to the stage a collection of sounds, stories, and songs steeped in tradition and a devotion to world culture. lntertwining a deep reverence for folk music and a passion for justice, they have made it their life’s work to sing songs that speak to something ancient yet surging with relevance. Whether playing at Red Rocks or in rail cars, at Italian street fairs or to Bulgarian herbalists, this fiercely independent band has blazed a unique and colorful path across the globe. 11 years into their movement, Rising Appalachia believes that the roots of all these old songs are vital to our ever evolving soundscape. Led by the collective voice of sisters Leah and Chloe, and joined by their beloved band — percussionist Biko Casini and bassist/guitarist David Brown – Rising Appalachia is a melting pot of folk music simplicity, textured songwriting, and those bloodline harmonies that only siblings car pull off. Listen for a tapestry of song, clawhammer banjo tunes, fiddle, double bass, acoustic guitar, djembe, barra, bodhran, spoken word and a wealth of musical layering that will leave you called to action and lulled into rhythmic dance simultaneously. It is both genre bending and familiar at the same time. Proudly born and raised in the concrete jungle of Atlanta, Georgia, sharpening their instincts in the mountains of Appalachia, and fine turning their soul on the streets of New Orleans they have crafted a 6-album career from the dusts of their passion. In 2015 Rising Appalachia founded the Slow Music Movement, to help maintain an independent musical spirit in the face of such a fast-paced world. They are creatively committed to keeping their work accessible at the local street level as well as expanding to larger audiences page 1/3 abroad, and have continued to maintain autonomy by self-managing, recording, producing and creating, and directing their work. They are greatly honored to do the work that they do.

WOOG RIOTS

— — — — — FACEBOOK EVENT  — — — — — — Woog Riots are Silvana Battisti and Marc Herbert. The duo is based in Darmstadt (Germany). In March 2016 they released their 5th album “Alan Rusbridger”. Their career in pop music began in 2004 when they compiled and curated an international tribute sampler dedicated to Manchester’s indie icons “The Fall”. The double CD was released on the Hamburg based “What’s So Funny About” label, run by Alfred ‘the record Pope’ Hilsberg, the same label handled the first three Woog Riots albums. Sung in English, their electro flavoured three minute garage-come broadway-hit songs cover various phenomena of culture, pop and politics. Promotional tours to the USA, Great Britain, Finland, Italy, Poland and the Netherlands have been greeted with zealous reactions and a steady growth of their following on the underground network. ‘From LoFi to Disco!’ ….not only perfectly describes the building blocks of Woog Riots’ musical world, but also supplies the name of their own Independent label, launched in 2013 with an album of the same title. Executed with much drive and energy, Battisti and Herbert’s new venture has already attracted other artists such as “Umherschweifende Produzenten” (aka Knarf Rellöm) and “The Spaghetti Wings” to release material with them. Art, Pop, Pop about Art … in February 2013 Woog Riots wrote a song as an invitation to the Art exhibition “Powerpoint” by Michael Riedel, which took place in the rooms of New York Top Galerist David Zwirner. The New York press described the song as “up-beat, euro-pop dance tune which sounds like a kid’s band version of Kraftwerk”. Here’s a link to the song: www.davidzwirner.com/exhibition/michael-riedel-ny/ In 2014 Woog Riots recorded “The Story of Pop”, which they released as a Download-Single accompanying Karl Bruckmaier’s book of the same title. Press Quotes “Early Modern Lovers meets the soundtrack for a Volkswagon commercial.” Revolver USA Distribution, San Francisco (USA) “Fun, German/Italian, guy-gal electro-pop duo who betray a fondness for Kraftwerk in the odd robotic vocal. Add Squeeze-esque pop hooks – as in track ‘Backstage Lemonade’ – to that mix and you’ll find yourself bopping along.” Time Out, London (UK) “…an up-beat, euro-pop dance tune that sounds like a kid’s band version of Kraftwerk with a girl singer. Very fun!” www.worleygig.com (USA) Italian-German boy-girl act Woog Riots have built up a sizable following around Europe with their own brand of ‘twee-rave’ and ‘riotpop’ successfully combining the sound of The Wedding Present and Television Personalities with their unique observations. BRIAN DOWNEY’S ALIVE & DANGEROUS

plus support: Jimmy The Weed _ Main Venue _ Facebook event Featuring: Brian Grace: Lead guitar/backing vocals. Brian is a well known musician in Ireland and has a career spanning almost 30 years. He started playing with the legendary Brush Shiels (Skid Row) in the ’80’s, moving on to play and record worldwide with the likes of Rob Strong, Andrew Strong (The Commitments) and Juliet Turner. Brian was musical director on the famous “Vibe for Philo” in Dublin and was a major contributor every year since 1986. Brian is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s finest guitarists and would give any players out there, past and present, a serious run for their money!!! Phil Edgar: Lead guitar/backing vocals Phil hails from Lisburn near Belfast in Northern Ireland and was born to play rock ‘n’ roll!! His early career saw him play with local bands and was heavily influenced by the music of Thin Lizzy, The Eagles and Peter Green. More recently Phil has had major exposure with Matt Wilson in The Sensational Northern Irish band, El Dude Brothers. Phil’s reputation as a young tear-away guitarist gives ALIVE AND DANGEROUS a sparkling injection of passion, style and flair. Matt Wilson: Bass guitar/lead vocals. Matt is a Belfast based musician and vocalist with a fervent love of blues, rock and soul. Starting off at an early age as a boy soprano, his teens saw him flirting with various bands, playing standards from Jimi Hendrix, Bill Withers and Funkadelic, leading him to become one of Northern Ireland’s most sought after radio jingle and corporate vocalists. The influence of Thin Lizzy’s music and in Particular, Phil Lynott’s vocal/writing style, making the perfect frontman for ALIVE AND DANGEROUS…….Are you ready?! Brian Downey on drums needs no introduction…… Hailing originally from Dublin, Brian enjoyed his first taste of success in Ireland with the top 20 hit ‘Morning Dew’ before forming ‘Orphanage with Phil Lynott. The two went on to form the legendary Thin Lizzy with Eric Bell and Brian remained a constant member until the band split in 1983. Having worked on Phil Lynott’s solo albums and the subsequent Grand Slam project. Brian relocated back to Dublin around the time of Phil’s untimely death on January 4th 1986. Brian remained in constant demand as both a touring and session drummer and regulary played live shows and recorded with renowned guitarist Gary Moore. Brian is often cited as being an influence by many of the world’s top drummers and feels invigorated to be playing the songs he co-wrote in Thin Lizzy with his new band ALIVE AND DANGEROUS.

“melancholic, androgynous pop noir set in smoke-filled darkness.” – Rolling Stone “Cigarettes After Sex’s sound is elemental, hazy, and romantic, but with a noir edge underneath Gonzalez’s androgynous voice. As the band’s name suggests, it’s reminiscent of lying in bed, but its ambient qualities don’t prevent it from being music you can dance to.” – Noisey Cigarettes After Sex is an ambient pop group based out of Brooklyn, NY led by songwriter Greg Gonzalez. Formed in 2008, the group consists of keyboardist Phillip Tubbs, bassist Randy Miller and drummer Jacob Tomsky. In the spring of 2012 Cigarettes After Sex recorded their first EP over the course of a single night in the stairway of a four story building. Since then they have become a viral phenomenon, generating tens of millions of views on YouTube for their exquisitely yearning, graceful pop noir. The band’s self-released debut single “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby” has clocked over 31 million views whilst the more recently shared “Affection” has received over 14 million. They recently signed to Partisan Records and are currently at work on a debut album, due for release in 2017. To mark the occasion, and just ahead of a run of UK/EU shows, the band has now released a new track entitled “K.” which you can hear below. The word-of-mouth success of Cigarettes After Sex extends beyond their huge online and Spotify stats.

BILLY CARTER, PILLOW QUEENS, PARTY FEARS & TOO TAME

_ Main Venue _ Facebook eventHow often do you get the opportunity to check out a 3-piece Rock n’ Roll Blues band from Seoul, S. Korea. Not that often! Come on down to Whelan’s, on Sun 29th May and catch Billy Carter with support from Pillow Queens & Too Tame. — — — — —

BILLY CARTER

https://www.facebook.com/blyctr https://twitter.com/billy_carter_ Dancing, jumping around with complete insanity, Billy Carter’s live performance is full of energy. They throw themselves around the stage building an atmosphere for their audience full of tension and excitement. The climax of their music is when they get emotionally naked and free. Through their two previously released untitled EPs, commonly referred to as “The Red” and “The Yellow” due to the album covers themselves, Billy Carter has been developing their own sound as a three-piece rock band without bass guitar, and finally, here comes their first full length album “[Here I Am].” According to Jiwon, “For this album, we wanted to be conscientious about our inner self more than external phenomenons. We tried to keep focus on things happening inside of ourselves like deep emotions, the flow of thoughts and so on.” Started as an acoustic project by JiwonKim (vo.) and JinaKim (gu.), Billy Carter took its current three-piece rock band form when HyunjoonLee joined on drums just a couple of years ago. Since they released their first EP, “The Red,” in June 2015, they have been chosen as the Rookie of the Year by K-Rookies KOCCA, a national agency charged with supporting culture and art run by Korean government, and many famous music websites and web magazines in Korea as Y, Diffsound, NaverMusic and so on. The EP was nominated for three 2015 Korean Music Awards: Rookie of the Year, Best Rock Music of the Year, and Best Rock Album of the year. Since Billy Carter released an acoustic EP titled “The Yellow” in January 2016, they have been expanding their musical career by taking part in music broadcast shows and music festivals in Korea. As opposed to their two EPs, their first full length album is concentrated on Billy Carter’s own energy shown at their live performances. You can still see the experimental work on their own way to express themselves. Jinaexplains, “We tried to use many different sounds from the city we’re living in. It was a musical try to express how the world reflects on me.” There are 13 songs on “[Here I Am]” and first 3 tracks, “Rollin’ Blues,” “Love and Hatred,” and “Lazy Talk” which have been almost always played as their opening act, are recorded at once without pause to reproduce the cheerful energy of their live performance. One of the centerpieces of the album, “You Ate My Brain,” is about being emotionally wasted because of an unbearable and painful feeling of love. Starting with a danceable rhythm, “The Dog” reveals Billy Carter’s rompysense of pop. Two of the most powerful rock songs on the album are “Parking Lot Love,” which is about various forms of love, and “Never Cry Again My Little Lady,” which shares the hope that friends and loved ones who are suffering would not have any more sorrow in their lives. Besides “You Ate My Brain,” “We Can Fight” most accurately represents the sentiment of the album. Through its 7-minute running time, Billy Carter is firmly rooting for all of those fighting against the social expectations and forces. You can listen to how two different voices get mixed each other and make the resonation uniquely in “I Am a Devil.” “I’ll Be a Good Girl” is filled with the most subdued sensibility among the tunes while “I’m So Lonely” lets you enjoy a touch of the blues. The song titled after Billy Carter themselves is a rhythmic rockabilly tune featuring contrabass by Roy from Street Guns, which helps make it even more joyous. The album is rounded out with one last track which is like a snapshot of the band’s time in the studio, with all three bandmatessinging, playing the guitar, clapping and stomping along together. — — — — —

Trad geeks may recognise ‘Call The Dancers’ as a battle cry issued on ‘I gCnoc na Graí / In Knocknaree’ a live album by Tony McMahon and Noel Hill from 1985 that captures the spirit and passion we humbly hope to take a stab at generating. Call The Dancers is where Rónan Ó Snodaigh and Eoin Dillon and friends will share the tunes they love. They’ll be sharing them with each other and with the dancers, drinkers and groovers who cross Whelans threshold each Tuesday for the next three months. This will be blistering. It will ooze the excitement of our glorious music and bring it to the world with the force it deserves. Call The Dancers is for and by people who adore trad and can’t get enough of it. We’ll be updating who the guests are when we know. Sometimes we will know in advance, sometimes we won’t.

AFTER THE GIG
