SHADOWS AND DUST

SHADOWS AND DUST

+ guests

Shadows and Dust are a four-piece acoustic rock band based in Dublin. The group is comprised of Dermot Kennedy on acoustic guitar and lead vocals, Micheál Quinn on drums, Lia Wright on violin and Erik Vaughan on double bass. In recent months, the group have played gigs in venues such as Whelan’s, The Sugar Club, The Village, The Odessa Club and Nighthawks at the Cobalt, as well as appearing on television (tg4’s Pop4) and radio (RTÉ Radio 1 Arena). The group are delighted to return to the Whelans stage, having spent the last couple of months writing and recording new material. Heavily inspired by art, folklore, film and various other creative mediums, Shadows and Dust incorporate poetic lyrics and a truly unique sound into all of their musical output. Their captivating combination of guitar, strings, percussion and Kennedy’s soulful voice results in a musical style that distinguishes them as a charismatic band that is difficult to compare to other current Irish groups.

THE CAIRN QUARTET

“One of the most compelling acts Canada has to offer.” (TIME Magazine)

“Exquisite.” (The National Post)

“4 out of 4stars!” (The Globe and Mail, Toronto Star)

“A national treasure.” (Exclaim!)

“(Land & Sea) is Slean’s masterpiece.” (The Montreal Gazette)

“Immaculately crafted….a significant pop record.” (CBC – The Hour)

“Slean’sunique poetic style is reminiscent of Irving Layton and Leonard Cohen” – (Time Magazine)

Described as “one of the most compelling acts Canada has to offer” (TIME Magazine) and nominated three times for her country’s top music prize (The Juno Awards), multi-faceted Canadian singer/songwriter/pianist Sarah Slean is hitting her stride. With her latest release, the ambitious double album “Land & Sea,” Slean has created what The Montreal Gazette calls “a masterpiece.”

Equal parts hooky songster and elegant maestro, Sarah’s latest opus is a dazzling study of contrasts. Land, a warm, gleeful spasm of unabashed pop/rock, is full of Slean’s signature lyrics, big voice and powerful piano chops, produced by Canadian darling Joel Plaskett and mixed by Big Sugar’s Gordie Johnson. Sea is a collection of nine cinematic, orchestral jaw-droppers, four of which were scored for 21 strings by Sarah herself. With the help of renowned producer/film composer Jonathan Goldsmith (Jane Siberry, Bruce Cockburn) and award-winning engineer Jeff Wolpert (Loreena McKennitt) Sea is “an awe-inspiring panorama of the mature poet and musician” containing “echoes of Gustav Mahler, Leonard Cohen and Kurt Weill.” (Toronto Star).

Over her career Slean’s recordings have incorporated aspects of cabaret, rock, pop, and orchestral, all knitted together by the startling poetry of her lyrics, virtuosic piano-playing, and – that voice: “a 19th century Kate Bush” (CBC). And she’s no less accomplished onstage. An established theatre attraction in Canada, Sarah has also opened for Bryan Ferry, Andrew Bird, Ron Sexsmith and Buck 65 in Europe.

NANU NANU, SI SCHROEDER & TRUMPETS OF JERICHO

The Certain Three Tour

NANU NANU
SI SCHROEDER
TRUMPETS OF JERICHO

The Certain Three Tour returns for its fourth annual outing this January, 2013.

Continuing on in the tradition of the last three years – where Irish-based booking agency Word of Mouth curates a triple bill of three very different acts and sends them out on tour – the 2013 tour will feature a diverse and compelling lineup, with an alternating running order for each show. Previous tours have featured Katie Kim, O Emperor, We Cut Corners, The Lost Brothers and Alessi’s Ark, amongst others.

The lineup for the Certain Three Tour 2013 will feature three home-grown Irish acts: electro-pop duo Nanu Nanu, lo-fi shoegazer Si Schroeder and the post-punk of Trumpets of Jericho.

NANU NANU

Nanu Nanu are an Alien-Pop duo based in Dublin. Members Mirrorman and Glitterface use analog and modular synthesizers teamed with a strong foundation of heavy beats and lush, otherworldly vocal processing to create their exciting and unique ‘Alien-Pop’ sound.

They have just finished their debut album, which will be released in early 2013 on Flaming June. Their debut single will be Pocket of Gold. It has been mixed by producer Rob Kirwan; the man who mixed PJ Harvey’s Mercury Prize winning album Let England Shake.

2013 will be the year of Nanu Nanu.

Specialising in a particularly flashy brand of avant garde electronica, Nanu Nanu employ echoey vocal effects and a whole lot of otherworldly hoots and clicks to create their beautifully freakish sounds – Celina Murphy, HotPress

SI SCHROEDER

Si Schroeder is a Dublin-based musician who mixes his voice with guitars, samples, acoustic instruments, beats and live drums to create haunting and uplifting melodic songs exploring the darker side of the human condition. A layered approach to composition and production results in dense, textured blends of synthetic and organic sounds, over which Si’s warm, soothing voice unravels stories of chaos and destruction.

His debut album, the critically acclaimed Choice Music Prize nominated Coping Mechanisms (2006), was the Irish Times’ record of the week, Foggy Notions’ album of the year, and is in the Hot Press list of top Irish albums of all time.

Highlights among his live shows include 2007’s Electric Picnic, 2008’s Future Days, The Kilkenny Arts Festival 2009, and abroad at EUROSONIC in Holland, Berlin’s Popkomm and New York’s Intelfest, The Chicago Cultural Center, and repeat visits to London’s influential Kosmische Club.

His second album is due for release in 2013.

Beautiful, beguiling, dreamy – Jim Carroll (The Irish Times)

Unique and otherworldly – Nialler9

TRUMPETS OF JERICHO

Trumpets of Jericho are a folk-tinged post-punk band from Cork, formed in 2010.

After two years of creating some semblance of a sound that they can call ‘their own’, the group finally decided to record their debut Songs Like an Alum Ut Its Nor Really, garnering praise and indifference in equal measure. Their energetic live shows have built them a strong and loyal following in the south of Ireland (i.e. Cork) and they recently opened for The Fall, which is pretty cool.

Cork’s Trumpets of Jericho have delivered a wonderfully idiosyncratic statement with their debut full-length release. A varying hybrid of veering synth-punk and noodling Krautfolk – AU Magazine

‘Song Like An Alum Ut It’s Nor Really’ has crept up and staked its claim as my favourite Irish record of the year so far…an album with a certain debauched decadence – Golden Plec

Trumpets of Jericho have remained a consistently outstanding band whether channelling a punk fury or a
more synth heavy approach – We Are Noise

THE AMBERTONES

THE AMBERTONES

+ guests

In January 2011, Lead Singer John and guitarist Hughie recorded an experimental EP at Driftwood Studios with the help of Dave Sadlier (Bass) and Paul Donnelly (drums). In March 2011, their self titled EP was released on I tunes which led to a sell-out in Dublin’s Crawdaddy venue. With a nice write up in Hotpress and another sell out show at the Academy 2 backed by MCD last July, the band finished 2011 writing and planning their first major release. Funded by weekly gigging around Dublin, The Ambertones decided on the prestigious Grouse Lodge which has seen the likes of Michael Jackson, Will I am and Snow Patrol. The next step was to identify a prestigious producer and the band were alerted to the availability of Nick Brine: a talented engineer and producer who has recorded the likes of Coldplay, Oasis, Stone Roses, Bruce Springsteen. Nick took time out of recording the Darkness’ latest offering to record in Dublin with “The Tones”. The band recorded tracks “Sparks to Flames” and “The Fighter” which will be released on 10 August 2012 with a single launch in Whelans. The single’s proceeds will go directly to the Motor Neuron foundation of Ireland. The single has already been showcased by Hot Press at the RDS Music Weekend as one of “Ireland’s hottest new tracks.”
