MARC O’REILLY (Solo) & CIARAN LAVERY (Solo)

MARC O’REILLY (Solo)

CIARAN LAVERY (Solo)

plus guest DERMOT KENNEDY ^ Upstairs ^ Tickets €10 incl bkg fee from whelanslive.com or locall 1890200078 An intriguing double bill, a chance to check out two of Ireland’s finest singer/songwriter’s. Both have highly acclaimed releases under their belts. A little about each act:

MARC O’REILLY

http://www.marcoreillymusic.com https://www.facebook.com/marcoreillymusic Irish folk/blues troubadour Marc O’Reilly will release his new album ‘Human Herdings’ on 28th March’14. Following the release of his critically acclaimed debut album ‘My Friend Marx’ in 2011, Marc O’Reilly has established himself as one of the most exciting artists within the folk/blues genre gaining comparisons with artists such as John Martyn and Bon Iver. 2013 saw Marc tour all over Europe including appearances at major festivals like Glastonbury, Electric Picnic and Boardmasters and squeezing in a trip to the US to appear at the Live in the Vineyard Festival in Napa, California. His alter-ego side project with his brother Pierre, the electro-pop duo ‘R’, recently receieved excellent radio support for their debut single ‘Change’ from tastemakers such as Steve Lamacq (BBC 6music), Janice Long (BBC Radio 2) and Paul Mcloone (Today FM) and reached Number 1 on the Amazing Radio Chart. As if that wasn’t enough to keep him busy, Marc has also provided vocals on 3 tracks for the new album by MOBO winning act Karios 4tet which was recorded at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios, has received 4 star reviews from Mojo, The Independent and Guardian and has led to the recording of a live BBC Maida Vale session for the Jamie Cullum Show on BBC Radio 2. ‘The best Irish release in the last 5 years 12/12 ‘ – 2UIBestow ‘Captivating, 9/10′ – The Last Mix Tape ‘Borders on being a work of genius’ – FATEA Magazine ‘Album of the Week’ – Dan Hegarty (2fm) ‘Utterly brilliant’ – Paul McLoone (Today FM) ‘Spectacular talent’ – Jamie Cullum (BBC Radio 2) 5***** – Rootstime 4**** – The Irish Times 4**** – Written in Music ///////

CIARAN LAVERY

http://www.ciaranlaverymusic.com https://www.facebook.com/ciaranlaverymusic https://twitter.com/ciaran_lavery Ciaran has already racked up over 11 MILLION plays on Spotify, this is unprecedented for such a new artist. You might be asking how can this be, when his other social stats are quite modest? The answer is really quite simple, he has great songs, people have added them to playlists on Spotify which have been listened to and then added to more playlists and so on and so on. Ciaran Lavery found his musical voice through the simplest of means “…listening to old 80s singles on my sister’s record player.” Cutting his young teeth in various (often noisier) incarnations over the last decade – that voice is now as soothing as it is timeless. Ciaran crafts heart-on-sleeve acoustic pop in the vein of ‘29’-era Ryan Adams; full of passion and meaning, “I come from a tiny village; you could literally drive through Aghagallon in thirty seconds, but it’s jam packed full of characters and real, genuine people. It’s the type of place where if you’re being an idiot someone will tell you. That’s just how the environment was. I guess that sort of honesty comes out in my music.” “It’s sound of a songwriter who’s very very in touch with his own ability and comfortable in his own skin.” – Zane Lowe, BBC Radio 1 “Lavery’s songwriting is nothing short of remarkable. His most recent EP is his best yet, bursting with can’t-be-faked honesty and emotion” – Hot Press “strong, crafted, hugely engaging songwriting” – Jim Carroll, Irish Times “One To Watch” – Irish Independent “it remains a fact: Lavery is very easily in the top three greatest songsmiths in the country, if not the most naturally-gifted Northern Irish voices of his generation” – The Thin Air ///////

JUAN WAUTERS (USA) + NO MONSTER CLUB

Whelanslive.com presents

JUAN WAUTERS

(CAPTURED TRACKS/USA)

plus special guest

NO MONSTER CLUB

^ Upstairs ^

Over ten years ago, a teenage Juan Wauters came to New York from Uruguay. Quickly after his arrival to the Big Apple, he turned to music to take control of the loneliness that came with his new surroundings. However, his isolation didn’t last long as he formed The Beets with newly made friends in his neighborhood, Jackson Heights. The Beets became known throughout the city with Spit On The Face Of People Who Don’t Want To Be Cool, the first LP released on Captured Tracks in 2009. The band continued to release numerous records and toured the United States extensively. As the Beets began to slow down in 2012, Juan had more to say and in 2014 Juan returned to Captured Tracks to release his debut solo album, N.A.P. North American Poetry. Who Me? is the next chapter in the ongoing story of Juan Wauters. Whereas his debut solo record was recorded casually over the course of one year, his sophomore album was crafted in under two weeks at Future Apple Tree in Rock Island, Illinois. Inspired by both the arrangements of Uruguayan songwriter Jaime Roos and the production of American master Dr. Dre, this collection of songs presents his continued approach to existential questioning through pop music. Tracks like “She Might Get Shot” and “I Was Well,” which may seem like wisdom addressed to the listener, are in fact part of Juan’s reciprocal process of self-actualization through songwriting and performing. Bringing new sounds to his repertoire, “This Is I” and “Through That Red” add a spiritual tone with ethereal string arrangements. Juan’s voice – which has risen to the forefront of his music since his first recordings with The Beets – intensifies with added nuance. Despite the expansion musically, one thing stays the same: Juan continues to find inspiration in his everyday life. Familiar themes – 90s hip hop, and, of course, his beloved Queens, NY – are still prevalent here and the cover of Who Me?, which was shot on the Queensboro Bridge that goes from midtown Manhattan into the neighborhood that gave us Nas, represents his home borough with the pride we’ve come to expect from Juan. The album’s title refers to catchphrase by regular Howard Stern “Wack Pack” member Beetlejuice, a radio show that Juan religiously has been listening to for years. The other thing that hasn’t changed: expect to see Juan playing soon, as he continues to tour the world in support of his second solo record. ////////////

SKOPE

^ Upstairs ^ Dissension Rising is an up and coming energetic Irish Rock Band. This will be their last Dublin show before they head to the USA with the “Sacerd Souls Stand Up Tour”. Currently they are busy writing their Original material for their up coming EP, which although Rock has undertones of Blues. Their Recent Release “Heaven Knows She’s Tried” was written by band members Vocalist Danni Carroll (Lyrics) and Lead Guitarist Keith Garrett (Music). The Song was written to help create Awareness of Mental Health in young people and has a strong message, “you are not alone”. Danni and Keith drew from their own experiences of Mental Health having battled their own Demons with Depression and Anxiety. The Rockin sound of Dissension Rising is made up of five Musicians. Vocalist, Danni Carroll originally from Dublin but now living in Kildare. Danni has an expressive voice with wonderful tones. Danni has a Family background in Music, her Mom Dorothea (Dee), her Uncle Danny (a Drummer who lives in LA and still gigging) and Grandfather Danny were both involved in the business since the 50s. Danni has sang with other bands prior to forming Dissension Rising with Keith Garrett. Lead Guitarist, Keith Garrett originally from Dublin now living in Kildare. Keith got hid love of Music from his Mom Hilary’s family. His maternal Grandmother was an accomplished Pianist and his Uncles still Musicians today. Keith has gleaned a reputation within the business for his guitar work and has played and recorded with other bands. On Bass there is Va Lentas who hails from Lithuania. Va previously played with an AC/DC Covers band in Lithuania. He has a Rockin Funky sound to his Bass and his energy on stage is evident to everyone. Dissension Rising’s Mr. Stix is Will Vara who comes from San Francisco but now lives in Dublin. Will has much experience, having played with great bands in the US. Will is an amazingly talented Drummer with great beats. Finally 2nd Lead/ Rhythm is in the form of Rob Higgins. Rob also an AC/DC player. though the quiet man of the Band he certainly doesnt lack a Rockin style and a quiet confidance. Rob and Danni have previously played together with another band so are not stranger. Together these Amazing Musicians form a band destined for the big time…..Dissension Rising. Currently Gigging throughout Ireland, in July Dissension Rising will be Joining “Sacred Souls” on The Stand Up for what you Believe Tour in the USA, where they will be on Tour from July to August, Gigging in Kentucky for 4th of July, Independance Day following this in August the are Performing in France. YES SUNSHINE (UK)

https://www.facebook.com/YesSunshine http://www.yes-sunshine.co.uk Yes Sunshine are a five piece band from Coventry,England. Formed in the spring of 2013, there distinctive sound, is created from indie, rock and punk influences. NME “A twin guitar assault that’s very reminiscent of early Strokes”. /////////

THE STILL TIDE (USA)

https://www.facebook.com/TheStillTide http://www.thestilltide.com Having left behind New York City’s jagged cityscape for the mountains of Denver’s skyline, indie rock trio The Still Tide has at last found a place to call home. Written and recorded in the aftermath of the move, their new EP Half Empty Rooms refracts the grit and urgency of city life through the lens of Colorado’s clean air and open space, creating a sound that occupies the liminal area between folk song and shoegaze, aspen trees and streetlights. Since the release of their last record, Tinder, the band has been busy working on new songs and developing the rich and dynamic palette of tones that has captivated their new fans. Joined by her longstanding bandmates Jacob Miller (Anthony Ruptak, The Kissing Club) and Aaron Latos (James Fearnley, These United States, Karl Berger) on this four track release, songwriter and lead vocalist Anna Morsett (Ark Life, Kaki King, These United States) carries listeners through a humbling search not just for a place to hang her hat, but also her heart. Since their departure from NYC, they’ve shared stages with Kaki King, John Vanderslice, Angel Olsen and Pure Bathing Culture among many others and have been featured on Colorado Public Radio’s Open Air live studio sessions. Playing what Pueblo PULP has called “bar music for space cowboys” and striking what Blurt Online described as “… a little sweet spot where indie rock, shoegaze and folk rock all intersect” the band has certainly come into their own and are looking forward to the busy year ahead. Following their album release and tour kick-off show at Syntax Physic Opera in Denver on March 27th 2015, the group will be taking their new songs and seasoned, luminous sound on the road, touring throughout the United States and Europe this spring and summer.

THE FONTAINES

https://www.facebook.com/fontainesband The Fontaines are a five-piece, Dublin based band influenced by 80’s British Alternative and Rock n’ Roll. With over 4000 plays on Soundcloud and the plan to release an EP in 2015, these guys are rapidly making waves on the Irish music scene. We’re delighted to welcome them to the upstairs stage at Whelan’s so be sure to get down and catch their set! You can check out some of their tunes over on their soundcloud page!
