Howard Marks – Scholar, Smuggler, Prisoner, Scribe
In 2013 intrepid bon viveur Howard Marks will debut his brand new spoken word show; Scholar, Smuggler, Prisoner, Scribe. With trademark honesty and penetrating humour, Howard will look back at four extraordinary and action packed phases of his life.
As a native of Missouri, Israel Nash Gripka grew up slap bang in the heartland of America. Ever restless, Israel was somehow destined to take the well travelled road to New York City where his songwriting skills were properly put to the test. In 2011 he released Barn Doors and Concrete Floors. The album was recorded live in an old barn in upstate New York and was an ode to Israel’s influences in the shape of Neil Young and the Rolling Stones; widespread critical acclaim followed and thereby ushered in a new, classic songwriter to the scene.
“music soaked in rural American lore.” ★★★★ – ROB HUGHES, UNCUT MAGAZINE
“retreating to the Catskills he reflects on the city’s temptation and hard-won redemption on a swaggering country rock album” ★★★★ – ANDY FYFE, Q MAGAZINE
“his breakthrough album” BOB HARRIS, BBC RADIO 2
Israel Nash Gripka has now signed to Loose Music and is commencing the next chapter of his career. The forthcoming album Rain Plans was inspired by Israel’s new home outside Austin, deep in Texas hill country. The young songwriter has fully embraced the meandering hills and endless skies of his Texas home, where you can find yourself so isolated that it is not uncommon for your path to be crossed by a tumbleweed or to hear the percussive warning of an agitated rattlesnake. There is an uneasiness that goes alongside the visual thrill of living in the untainted Lone Star hills and Rain Plans is a testament to the overwhelming grandeur of nature and our place in it. These songs are about finding solace in family and the fear of the future – knowing what you’ll never know and the uncertainty that comes with that knowledge. At times melancholy celebrations and at other times raw guitar rock, Israel’s new surroundings have helped him create a tone only hinted at in his previous work and a songwriting sophistication that comes with great time and effort. Rain Plans is new territory for Israel Nash Gripka, both literally and figuratively, as well as an expression of his finding a strange sort of direction in the fragility of existence.

Manden Express is an international group of Artists fusing traditional and contemporary styles of West African music from the Mande Empire of what is now known as Mali. Inspired by village, Wassalou (Oumou Sangare) styles and the explosion of new musical influences that merged with African music in the 1960′s it blends Kamele n’goni harp, djembe, and African bass drums (dunun) with Electric bass and guitar to produce stomping grooves and hypnotic time patterns.
The band have made recent appearances at Love live music 2013, Body and Soul Festival and the Drogheda Samba Festival.
Ed Romanoff has lived in VA, WY, and NY collecting an array of songs ranging from cattle ranches to carnivals. He co-wrote and toured internationally with Mary Gauthier. “The Fifth of July,” with Mary Gauthier and Crit Harmon, won First Place for ‘Best Lyrics’ in the 2011 USA Songwriting Competition. His debut album, produced by Crit Harmon features Josh Ritter, Tift Merritt, Mary Gauthier and Meg Hutchinson. Ed lives in Brooklyn.
Rachael Yamagata has reunited with Happenstance producer, John Alagia (Dave Matthews Band, Jason Mraz, Liz Phair) for her third studio album Chesapeake, the follow up to her heralded 2 CD Set Elephants…Teeth Sinking Into Heart.
Praised by critics for her intimately confessional songwriting and arrangements, Rachael released her last album, Elephants…Teeth Sinking Into Heart on Warner Bros. Records in October of 2008. Entertainment Weekly called her delivery “Gorgeous” and Rolling Stone said her “soulful, cigarette-scratched voice and melancholy lyrics recall Fiona Apple and PJ Harvey.” She toured extensively in support of the album playing to crowds throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. Songs from the album appeared in various television programs and films including Greys Anatomy, Private Practice, Brothers and Sisters and more. She also made an appearance in the season finale of 30 Rock in 2009.

Rulebreaker. Trailblazer. Visionary. Phenomenon. And yet, even the breathless plaudits of the world press don’t quite do him justice. When Preston Reed picks up an acoustic guitar, words will fail you. To watch Reed perform is to witness the bending of reality.
The New York master tweaks the nose of musical convention, pokes the eye of received wisdom and burns the rulebook of the past. Using an evolution of the two-handed acoustic technique he pioneered in 1987, he fuses chord-based grooves, soaring melodic runs and polyrhythmic percussion that integrates the breathtaking potential of the guitar body. The power and depth of his original compositions are as unique as the man’s execution, as blues, rock, funk and jazz meet, interlock and attack in a sonic brew unlike anything you’ve heard before. Preston Reed doesn’t need a band. He is the band.Twenty-six years after his idiosyncratic style was born, Reed’s seismic global impact has created a sea of guitarists playing in his style, many of them inspired by 1994’s hit instructional DVD, The Guitar Of Preston Reed: Expanding The Realm Of Acoustic Playing.
The homages are flattering, but, today at the height of his game, and despite his many followers and imitators, Reed’s recordings and live performances still define the sound of the pioneering compositional guitar genre he invented over a quarter century ago.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of Nirvana’s In Utero a bunch of Limerick musicians decided to get together to pay tribute to this great & influential album. Members of Fox Jaw Bounty Hunters, The Hip Neck Blues Collective, Fire In Cairo, Cluairichaun and friends have joined forces for a one off performance of In Utero from start to finish, as well as a selection of Nirvana favourites. It will be a night of celebration that no Nirvana fan should miss.
In Utero is the third and final studio album by the American grunge band Nirvana, released on September 13, 1993, on DGC Records. Few bands in rock history have had a more immediate and tangible impact on their contemporary pop musical landscape than Nirvana did in the early Nineties. When the Seattle trio hit the big time in 1991 with the game-changing album Nevermind, mainstream radio was awash in the hair metal of Poison and Def Leppard. But seemingly within hours of the release of Nirvana’s anarchic, angry single “Smells Like Teen Spirit” — and its twisted anti-pep-rally video—the rules had changed. Artifice was devalued; pure, raw emotion was king. Overwhelmed by the sudden success of Nevermind, Nirvana promised to take a harsher, more abrasive route on their second major-label release. Enlisting Chicago-based noise merchant Steve Albini (of Big Black fame), Kurt Cobain and company succeeded in producing a record that was violent, disillusioned, and deeply moving. Every song reads like a commentary on the cost of fame (“Serve the Servants”) and the unhealthy relationship between performer and fan (“Milk It”). There is no denying the sheer power of Cobain’s songwriting, his singing, and the band’s amazing, visceral power. Cobain even manages a John Lennon-like mantra at the end of the heart-wrenching “All Apologies.”
Join some of Limericks finest musicians as they pay tribute to In Utero as well as an extensive revisting of the bands back catalogue and a special revisiting of Unplugged for a one-off not-to-be-missed show!

Conor Masterson’s film In the Deep Shade is not a ‘definitive’ careerspanning documentary of The Frames. Nor is it a fly-on-the-wall expose or an us-against-the-world hero saga. It is, simply put, a stark portrait of an extraordinary band, who have played together for over 20 years.

“Breathtaking… a young musician who is essentially standing on the shoulders of giants, but who has worked his way through these influences and created something of his own.” – Toner Quinn, Journal of Music in Ireland, on Liam O’Connor
“Here we have a stylist who has taken his instrument to new heights… Noel shapes each tune as a finely sculpted piece of intricate musical art, delicacy and beauty.” – P.J. Curtis on Noel Hill
Liam O’Connor – Fiddle, Viola
Caoimhín Ó Fearghail – Uilleann Pipes, Flute, Guitar, Vocals
Noel Hill – Concertina
Spanning three generations, O’Connor, Hill and Ó Fearghail – all TG4 Gradam Ceoil winners – are united by a deep knowledge and love for the music of the legendary masters of Irish tradition: Coleman, Ennis, Clancy, Potts and Tóibín.
For this tour, these three stellar soloists are sure to delight trad fans with their fresh, vibrant take on the classic Irish traditional music repertoire, as well as digging deep into the vaults to unearth some lesser-known melodies from manuscript sources.
Expect to hear everything from powerful dance music, lively jigs and melancholic hornpipes to poignant Gaelic slow airs and sean nós songs. Thanks in no small measure to multi-instrumentalist Ó Fearghail, there’s also a wide range of sounds and instrumentation to drink in: with fiddle, viola, concertina, uilleann pipes, flute, guitar and singing in various combinations – all laced with a healthy dose of folklore, personal anecdotes and good humour.

The Furious Haze has been born to give the Irish rock scene the booster injection that it needs and the music speaks Volumes. TFH Single “Crazy Jane The Hurricane” is due for release mid-July 2013 followed by the EP 5 weeks later. As quoted last week by Richie Ryan, from Phantoms Fm’s Key Cuts “In an Irish music scene already in rude health, The Furious Haze take it one step further with an album that’ll stun you into wondering how you lived without it. Ridiculously original, delivered with the ferocity their name promises. A superb debut.” – Richie Ryan

It’s been a long road but the wait is finally over as Corner Boy, Touchwood and Aces Wild have earned their place on this year’s festival circuit and will battle it out in the final to become 2013 Red Bull Bedroom Jam champions.
After winning over the Buzz Chart and Festival Chart, the bands will now go on to perform at one of Castlepalooza,Westport Festival and Glasgowbury before sharing a stage together at Indiependence in Cork. Then the three will face off for the live final in Whelans later in August where our judges Nialler9, Spin 103.8’s Dara Quilty and Glasgowbury founder Paddy Glasgow will decide who is worthy of a recording session in the famous Grouse Lodge studios and the chance to follow in last year’s winners Walking On Cars’ footsteps.
Commiserations are due to the three worthy competitors Red Elephant, Don’t Shoot andBang Bang who helped make up an incredibly strong festival chart but for the rest of the summer it’s all about three bands.
Aces Wild
Cork five piece Aces Wild were the first band through on the Buzz Chart way back in April thanks to their polished funk-rock anthem Kids On Bikes And Flashing Lights. The band are only two year’s old but they’ve got already found their sound and if their Bedroom Jam session is anything to go by they’re sure to rip it up on the festival stages this summer.
Corner Boy
Week three of the Bedroom Jam brought us a real gem in the shape of Wexford’s Corner Boywhose catchy take on trad and folk saw them through. Just listen to the band’s session and you’ll hear how perfect their sound is for an early evening festival set.
Touchwood
The last band through on the Buzz Chart but by no means least, Touchwood blew through the competition with their big pop sound. They’re no newcomers when it comes to the big stages having already supported Kodaline this summer and they’re sure to win over more fans when they take to the festivals.
”Propelled by the jaw-droppingly dynamic vocals of front woman Amy Kelly”
The Stoney Brokes are Tallaght’s retort to burnt-out cars and pyjama fashion chic. The band endeavours to provide a spectacle for their live audiences. The vivacity that died with the drain-pipe wearing, trendy hair-cut bands of the new Millennium is alive here, making The Stoney Brokes one of the most exciting bands on the Irish scene today.
Their catalogue of catchy choruses, fearless drive and precise delivery also transcends the stage and makes for quality listening on record, The band features Amy Kelly on Vocals, Dan McKenna on guitar and vocals, Ciaran Redmond on lead guitar and vocals, Dave Penny on Bass and Ollie Jordan-Kelly on Drums. The Stoney Brokes debut album is due early summer 2013.
