WE WERE PROMISED JETPACKS

In 2009 Adam Thompson (Vocals / Guitar), Darren Lackie (Drums), Sean Smith (bass) and Michael Palmer (Guitar) were a band of nineteen year old University Students, bunked up together in a tenement flat in the West End of Glasgow, Scotland. On signing to Fat Cat Records later the same year, the band could not have anticipated the journey they were about to embark on. Now, five years later, We Were Promised Jetpacks are ready to release their third studio album entitled ‘UNRAVELLING’.

We Were Promised Jetpacks début album These Four Walls (2009) was released to critical acclaim. Thus began the bands busy touring schedule, playing high profile festival slots around the UK and USA supporting label mates Frightened Rabbit and The Twilight Sad.

The extensive touring schedule continued and the release received support and high praise from the likes of

Rolling Stone and Spin Magazine. The band also continued to build on their high profile live performances with sets at Coachella, Fashions Big Night Out at New York’s Rockerfeller Centre and on the televised Last Call with Carson Daly.

Lead vocalist Adam Thompson says;

“It was a fairly straightforward decision to work with Paul. He has done plenty of brilliant work and we had worked with him for a few days before recording our first album and always remembered enjoying recording with him. I’m really chuffed with that decision. I think Paul has done a great job and its the first time we’ve ever been present to mix the album with the same person who has recorded it, which has been an enjoyable and much more relaxing experience for us since about April 2004 so having someone new with us has been an enjoyable part of the process.”

The impending album release also sees the addition of a new member to the band in the form of multi instrumentalist Stuart McGachan. Thompson’s explains “Stuart is an accomplished keys, piano and guitar player as well as having a lovely little singing voice and with him we have tried to do something a little different with this selection of songs. We’ve known him for ages and played music with him before so we were pretty sure it would work out. It has just been the 4 of us since about April 2004 so having someone new with us has been an enjoyable part of the process.”

UNRAVELLING exhibits the sonic mastery and song writing craft We Were Promised Jetpacks has developed through years of touring and recording while preserving the innocence and essence of the band who grew out of that flat in Glasgow. There is an unambiguous directness to Thompson’s lyrics, evident in impending tracks ‘Safety in Numbers’, ‘Keep it Composed’, ‘Peaks and Troughs’ and ‘Night Terror that conjurer the notion of an conflicted protagonist struggling to keep his life on course while battling a creeping sense of uncertainty and impending doom.

UNRAVELLING is released on Fat Cat Records on September 5th 2014 in Republic of Ireland ahead of their Dublin headline show 14th September live at Whelans, Venue – Wexford Street

Album You Want the Night will be released worldwide on June 17th via Minty Fresh Records (US). 2014 has been an exciting year for Sleep Thieves as the band have enjoyed positive attention from influential blogs for their advance singles City of Hearts and You Want the Night and can count The Line of Best Fit, Under the Radar Magazine (LA), Pigeons and Planes, and The Guardian among their suppporters.

The album can currently be pre-ordered on vinyl at www.sleepthieve.net with beautiful artwork by Irish artist Bennie Reilly (also lead vocalist/songwriter with little xs for eyes). If Kate Bush had joined Enya and Bat for Lashes to pen a soundtrack for Jane Eyre this album could be it. Haunting, dreamy and cinematic, it opens up and rolls in like a storm over the moors, calling out to a forgotten love, enticing and caressing the listener. Recorded by Keith Byrne in the band’s home studio it was mixed by Rian Trench of Solar Bears.

Listen to title track You Want the Night here:

Having just returned from London the band are looking forward to their live dates in Ireland:

The Oh Yeah Music Centre, Belfast on Friday, June 13th.

Roisin Dubh, Galway, Thursday, June 19th

Upstairs in Whelans, Dublin, Saturday, June 21st with special guests

They are also curating a stage at the YouBloom Festival on June 14th.

“Dublin-based trio Sleep Thieves make perfect music for a late night drive through quieting streets, past twinkling lights and the occasional wanderer-the sort of music that sits wonderfully alongside the work of groups like Glass Candy and Chromatics” – Pigeons and Planes

“City of Hearts is the very definition of noir-disco: dark, almost malevolent, with a cinematic tinge to it. Listening to it, you can just feel the night air whip past your face as you drive through the empty streets of a dark brooding city – the streetlights your only light, this track the only sound you can hear.” – The Line of Best Fit

“Dublin-based Sleep Thieves will definitely entice you to stay up late, whether to dance or drift off in a daydream, but you won’t hold that against them.” – The Guardian

“Dublin’s Sleep Thieves skate along feathery synths and breathy female vocals. Their new single City of Hearts kinda sounds like what might happen if Johnny Jewel was producing Phantogram.” – Under the Radar Magazine

“Like Phantogram with a disco fetish, Dublin’s Sleep Thieves utilize ethereal female vocals and dance beats that would make Giorgio Moroder proud. City of Hearts has a late-night vibe, which makes us wonder if Johnny Jewel had anything to do with it.” – MTV Iggy

THE REVELATOR ORCHESTRA

PAT BARRETT

Weird, cool, majestic, dark, brooding, intense. These are the kinds of words used to describe the Revelator Orchestra’s universe. Their performances can – in a heartbeat – lift you from the space you inhabit to a crimson throbbing place, a place with a soundtrack of primal beats and web-like words, Peter Murphy wearing black feathered wings and eyeliner, climbing across legs, tables and glasses, presenting us with his id while the ego watches in terror, as Acko beats a wailing guitar into submission, and Paula Cox screams in an ethereal way, and takes you to the very core of yourself while your neck tingles.Murphy, has an intensity that nails your boots to the floor. A founder member of The Tulips and Grasshopper, one of Ireland’s foremost music and arts writers and the author of John The Reveletor and Shall We Gather At the River.

Acko is music with a capital M – frontman, songwriter, composer, recording engineer, and since 2005, producer. Now, on stage, he’s the man with a Takamine slung over his shoulder, finger on the sample trigger. Then there’s Ms Paula Cox, The lead singer with The Bush, The Tree, and Me, signed in 2000 to Epic, counting Blur, The Strokes and Jarvis Cocker among her many fans. She has sung on and composed for film scores, and has written, arranged, sung and co-produced many of the tracks on the forthcoming second album.

Murphy’s second book Shall We Gather at the River is the inspiration for the album The Brotherhood of the Flood. The book tells the stories of nine men who give themselves to the Rua river in the town on Murn in winter 1984. Punk legend Richard Hell described it as “majestic and squalid at the same time, as if the Bible were actually about Elvis. The rhythm and music carry you like a baby on a raft on the river, but it’s the precision of the words that cinches you.”

MY TRIBE YOUR TRIBE

http://mytribeyourtribe.bandcamp.com/

My Tribe Your Tribe is the latest music release by Irish songwriter/recording artist, George Mercer. Originally active as front-man of Alt-New Wave group Boy Lights Fire, George decided to move away from guitar-orientated song structures, instead to focus on a more personal electronic writing style.

‘George’s Volume 2 EP delivers an experimental, delicate and isolated soundspace but overall something that catches you with its interlooping hooks and unusual rhythm section. His vocals are a delight adding to a layered intricacy that stands well above many others.Few words are needed to describe this EP. Listen loud and enjoy

WOB!

https://www.facebook.com/wobdublin

WOB! are a Dublin trio who play Live Electronica, blending many different genres together on a foundation of live Drum and Bass beats. Think of Pendulum experimenting with Bossa Nova in a set-up similar to Jojo Mayer’s Nerve…

Founded in January 2013 by drummer Nenad Djordjevic (aka Djollie), the line-up also includes Paul O’Hare on Guitar, Effects, Synth and Stephen Kerr on Keyboards, Sampler and Cornet.

CARRIAGES

https://www.facebook.com/carriagesband

Carriages are a new experimental folk two-piece made up of producer Harry Bookless (Little Xs for Eyes/Fearsome Floors remixes) and singer-songwriter Aaron Page (Water Cycle). Formed in 2012, Carriages have recorded from bedroom studios to the National Concert Hall, but some of their most exciting work is done outdoors, where Harry collects the found sounds from which he spins intricate beats and soundscapes to accompany Aaron’s delicate songwriting and guitar work.

BUNK

Taking the nectar from blues, latin and funk music, this sleek modern band flowers to create an unique sound.Influenced by Beck, Tom Waits, Quantic.. They have stewed their magic to create their new upcoming debut album ‘Lights at Sea’. They draw influences from many areas, front man Richard Farrell travelled to New Orleans and Havana Cuba, mixed around with the locals to discover the simple nature of their passion for music, bass player Graham Heaney has been Dublins upstanding funk man, laying the groove any where he sets foot. Dan Whelan permeates his guitar chops with ease and precision, a man of practice and heart. Alberto Alvarez ties the band together with a worldly knowledge of percussion and patience. Drummer Sebastian Jezzi who hails from Argentina brings with him a wizard like mastery behind the drum kit, he has a very peculiar touch, one of the most musical drummers out there. With their talents combined, this make up for a very special band.

TALL TALL TREES

[BEATY HEART CANCELLED] //////////

“In ‘Lighght’, technique and experimentation collide in high-spirited, even disorienting ways. It’s the product of a mind that always seems both hard at work and immersed in play.” – NPR

“Kishi Bashi’s delirious melodies, multi-tracked vocals, and soaring violin are capable of producing a sensation very similar to actual chemical intoxication.” – Stereogum

STREAM: LIGHGHT (VIA NPR “FIRST LISTEN”)

Joyful Noise Recordings and multi-instrumentalist/singer-songwriter Kishi Bashi are pleased to announce the full stream of his brand new full-length album, Lighght. Streaming now over at NPR two weeks prior to its official release on Tuesday, May 13, Lighght picks up where his debut album, 151a, left off with more gorgeously whimsical looping and violin/vocal gymnastics. Though violin remains his primary instrument and songwriting muse, Kishi Bashi has expanded his palette to include more diverse and nuanced instrumentation on Lighght. Bright and soaring avant-pop songs are prevalent, as are Eastern-tinged arrangements, gentle ballads, Philip Glass-inspired improvisations, and more than a few moments that flirt with ’70s prog (in the tradition of ELO or Yes). If this sounds jarringly kaleidoscopic, that’s because it is. But it works. Check out the full stream of Lighght over at NPR HERE.

The critically acclaimed 151a was crafted over a four-year period while Kishi Bashi, the pseudonym for artist K. Ishibashi, was touring and recording with Regina Spektor, Sondre Lerche, and of Montreal (where he was a full-time member and co-producer). In late 2012, after the success of 151a, Kishi Bashi decided to focus solely on his own music and began composing the new material, which led to the songs that are featured on Lighght.

Taking its title from the one-word poem by minimalist poet Aram Saroyan, Lighght (pronounced “Light”) continues and expands the sound of 151a which earned him the title of “Best New Artist” for 2012 by NPR. Since the profoundly successful release of his debut, Kishi Bashi has toured relentlessly, captivating audiences across the globe with his loop-based live show, and fostering a groundswell of devotees.

TALL TALL TREES

www.talltalltrees.com Mike Savino is not your grandaddy’s banjo player, and Tall Tall Trees is definitely not your average indie-folk outfit from NYC. Savino has released two records on his own start-up label Good Neighbor Records, Tall Tall Trees (2009), and moment (2012), and has toured extensively, mystifying audiences with his innovative banjo technique. Whether performing with a full band or solo, Savino runs his instrument, dubbed by fans as the “space banjo” or “banjotron”, through a slab of effects and loopers, bowing, drumming, and strumming out multi-textured arrangements on the fly to support his lyrically driven songs. Most recently, Tall Tall Trees has been touring the US and Canada collaborating with beatboxing violinist, and of Montreal alum, Kishi Bashi. Savino is currently working on a third record which he is expecting to release in 2014. CMJ – “Bearded man sings songs, violates banjo”

The music of Tell No Foxx is both heartfelt and mysterious, using a wide pallet of electronic & natural drums, hollow synths, minimalistic guitar & meaningful lyrical textures their music glimpses echoes of the 80’s with contemporary taste.

“Despite only catching the latter half of Tell No Foxx’s set (with Meeting House Square seemingly running early all evening), they made such a good impression that they’ve made this list. They’re a slick, very polished band who are unashamed at the level of production they put into their music. Imagine an Irish contender to Bastille’s crown and you’d be right on the money. It’s atmospheric rock with pop sensibilities that has it’s sights set on the charts.” DD, GoldenPlec.com.

Land Lovers have notions on being a pop band. They are founder members of the Popical Island collective and have just released a split 12″ record with Windings. Previously, they have released 2 albums (Romance Romance and Confidants) and an EP (Immovable Feet). They have contributed songs to all 3 Popical Island compilations. Finally, they’ve played lots of enjoyable gigs including festival appearances at Electric Picnic and Body & Soul and opening for the likes of Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, The Mantles, Nodzzz and The Wave Pictures.

Praise for Land Lovers/Windings split 12″: “Land Lovers are a beautiful surprise…Timeless melodies that instantly sound familiar, clever, witty lyrics and short, snappy arrangements that don’t outstay their welcome – all the elements are here in this intoxicating mix that grabs the best bits of the Undertones, Vampire Weekend, Belle and Sebastian and the 80s indie pop of the C86 generation… pop delivered with energy, wit and exuberance. Fantastic” 3.5/5, Entertainment.ie · “The union of two of Ireland’s most innovative bands and labels has yielded some impressive results…showcases both acts at their best”, 8/10, Hot Press. · “Quality prevails throughout their seven-song set, though the chiming Close Embrace and the lovelorn, anthemic Matilda are surely the silverware contenders here. ”, 4/5, Record Collector · “Attests to the health of domestic independent music”, 4/5, Metro. · “…an album that finds the duo’s music working together while still remaining individual and relevant”, 4/5, Thelastmixedtape.com. Praise for ‘Confidants’: “Magnificent, haunting worlds of domestic wonder… a rare gem of a record” – Jim Carroll, The Irish Times (4/5 review) “Confidants is a proud miscellany of decade-spanning pop influences” – Hot Press “Confidants is a sparkling listen.” – AU Magazine “An accomplished and rich record” – Nialler 9. Praise for ‘Romance Romance’: “This excellent debut delivers bang up to date, uncommonly smart pop. Fresh melodies engage first, then fantastic lyrics kick in… Achingly sweet…perfectly formed collection” – 4/5, The Ticket (Irish Times) “Irish album of the summer, packed to the brim with gorgeous, singable tunes. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, like this record in any other musical camp in the country.” – Off Her Rocker (HotPress.com) “A sparky little gem from Dublin’s DIY leftfield… with a stinging lyric sheet. Vocalist Pádraig Cooney is both wounded poet and cynical dissector of modern mores and his sonic furnishings of clipped guitars and wobbly eighties synths make for a smart, no-frills backdrop. A hugely promising and highly recommended debut.” – 4/5, RTÉ Guide ——–
