MINERAL // www.whelans25.com //

Whelans Launches its REVISITED series of shows on March 27th with the POWER OF DREAMS playing their debut album Immigrants, Emigrants & Me. Part of Whelans 25th birthday celebrations, REVISITED in a series of gigs where some of Ireland best albums get an airing live. Over the rest of the year 8 acts will dust off their best known works and play them in their entirety. Some of the acts already signed up are Something Happens who will perform Stuck Together With God’s Glue on May 10th and Sharon Shannon who will play her ground breaking debut album on June 21st. More information on these shows and further additions over the coming weeks…

“Power Of Dreams were a genius band who should have been massive, Craig has it going on even now” – Alan McGee

The landmark debut album by Power of Dreams was released in 1990, receiving glowing reviews worldwide with Craig Walker garnering praise for a lyrical maturity beyond his 18 years and the band’s spiky indie pop assault winning fans among press and public alike.

Power of Dreams released their critically acclaimed debut EP “A Little Piece of God” on Keith Cullen’s London-based Setanta Records in 1989, while Craig Walker was still at school. Following a six-figure bidding war between rival record labels, the band signed a deal with Polydor Records. In December 1989, the British music magazine NME picked Power of Dreams, along with others such as Carter USM and The Charlatans, as their ‘stars of tomorrow’.

Their debut album, Immigrants, Emigrants and Me was released in 1990, receiving glowing reviews worldwide. The album was produced by Ray Shulman and sold well in France, Japan, the UK and Ireland. The band then embarked on a world tour, taking in more than 30 countries, including Japan and North America. The follow-up album, 2 Hell With Common Sense, was released two years later, produced by Dave Meegan and featuring a more powerful sound, helped by additional guitarist Ian Olney (ex-Cypress, Mine!).

Later albums were less successful in the UK/Ireland but the band retained a following – and their major label contract – in Japan. Third album Positivity was released on Lemon Records in 1993, and further developed the sound introduced on their previous record. Power of Dreams then released their last album Become Yourself the following year. In 1995 the band backed and recorded with musician Soichi Taniguchi in Japan before disbanding.

Following the split Craig Walker and Ian Olney formed Pharmacy with Chris Pierce, and Morty McCarthy from The Sultans of Ping FC. Pharmacy released one single called “Shine” in 1998. Subsequently, Craig Walker recorded three albums with Archive before releasing his debut album, Siamese, in 2009. Ian Olney formed and performed in a number of bands including Temperance Union, Miracle Retreat, Deer Park and Red Atlas, and has been playing bass for Sultans of Ping since 2005. Keith Walker went on to front Paranoid Saints, The Ex-Kings and The Bollox.

In November 2009, Power Of Dreams announced a reformation and tour to promote the 20th anniversary re-release of their first album (on 100% Music) in March 2010. In December 2010, a further tour of Ireland took place with Sultans of Ping and The Frank and Walters to support the release of a compilation album, 1989: The Best Of Power Of Dreams, which included a new track.

In March 2011, Keith Walker announced an amicable departure from the band, and has gone on to play with Sister Cities, Being Cool Is Lonely and The Holy Coast. Ian Olney plays with new band Cat Meat. Craig Walker has continued to perform as Power of Dreams and work on new material alongside his new project, Paris-based Mineral.

In December 2011 “Immigrants, Emigrants and Me” was featured in the book 101 Irish Records You Must Hear Before You Die. In April 2013 the album was featured in the Irish Independent’s top 30 albums of all time.

EDISONS [ALBUM LAUNCH]

EDISONS

[“Little Bohemia” Album Launch]

plus guests

Edisons were formed in late 2011, as a vehicle for the combined material of singer songwriters Fran King & Pete Fagan. Their debut album together “Little Bohemia”, chronicles the life and times of John Dillinger, the notorious depression era bank robber, from the American Mid West. True to the subject matter, it contains no electric instrumentation, instead the band rely on Acoustic guitars, mandolins, Dobro’s, Upright Bass, drums, piano, violins, harmonium and Ukulele. Set against wonderful vocal arrangements, and featuring the Badlands choir. Both Fran & Pete believe the real stars of the show are the songs.

“Little Bohemia” has been described as an organic audio collection of tunes, that bridge the gaps between folk hero & outlaw. Coloured by the back drop of the Great Depression,

to paint the real story of love, loss, joy & sorrow, of a genuine American legend. The band are about to embark on a Nationwide tour in support of the album.

MICHAEL FRANTI & SPEARHEAD

Raglane presents

MICHAEL FRANTI & SPEARHEAD

plus guest

Michael Franti knows all about the power of music. He knows how it can inspire, uplift and make people want to dance or cry. He felt it firsthand recently when he heard the children’s chorus at New York’s PS22 elementary school singing “I’m Alive (Life Sounds Like),” the celebratory first single from Franti’s tenth studio album, All People.

“It moved me to tears, to hear these kids singing, ‘Everybody wants me to be who they want me to be.’ That’s who I wrote ‘People’ for. To let them know, your mission in life should be to be yourself and to embrace the diversity of others.”

It’s a rule the barefoot, 6-foot-6 San Francisco based singer-songwriter-guitarist and philanthropist has diligently followed over the past two decades, proactively creating and supporting numerous environmental, humanitarian and social causes. It explains the evolution of sound on All People , colossal dance beats and dizzying electronic effects taking the fore, as well as a lyrical sincerity that has always had Franti singing about what moves him most.

All People  is the follow-up to Franti’s wildly successful 2010 release, “The Sound of Sunshine”, his highest charting album to date. Recorded primarily at his home with guitarist J Bowman, the two recorded some 35 songs before settling on the final track list for All People . For the first time, Franti reached out to collaborate with various writers and producers.

“It was like speed dating,” Franti says. “You’ve got a limited amount of time to write the greatest song you’ve ever heard. But when it works, it’s magic.”

The chemistry is evident on collaborations with multi-platinum Australian producer/songwriter Adrian Newman, who co-wrote “Long Ride Home,” “Closer To You,” “Say Goodbye” and “I’m Alive (Life Sounds Like)”, as well as with the seven-time Grammy-nominated Canadian production team The Matrix, who produced and co-wrote the tracks “11:59” and “On and On.”

Sam Hollander, another collaborator who has worked with chart-topping acts like Train, One Direction and Katy Perry, came on for the songs “Wherever You Are” and “I Don’t Wanna Go.” Franti says, “He also comes from a similar musical experience as I do, growing up when rap, punk and reggae were merging. But he also really knows the pop realm.”

Not that Franti has completely left behind the world of the 24-hour news cycle. His outrage can be heard on tracks like “11:59” and “Say Goodbye,” which was inspired by the Trayvon Martin shooting. Instead, Franti has both widened his scope of the world and pulled in closer for his most intimate moments.

FRANTIBIO/2

Many of the love songs on All People  are born from his relationship with his partner Sara. “These songs are about the power of unconditional love, born out of tough times. It’s rare to find someone who accepts you being your own authentic self. In the past I didn’t always give space for the broad spectrum of emotion, but this time I made an effort to write about everything I experience.”

More than ever, the songwriter looked to his primary influences for inspiration, referencing the wide range of work by music icons like John Lennon, Bob Marley, Johnny Cash, Marvin Gaye and the Clash. Of the sound on All People  Franti says, “My favorite artists were great at pop form. I don’t think I’ve changed what I do. I just realized I can do it simpler and more direct.”

Franti and his band Spearhead are known for the communal spirit they create with their extraordinary live shows. The singer regularly brings down the barrier between the performers on stage and the people in the audience; whether venturing into the crowd to slap hands or pulling fans up to dance, sing and play along with the band. He’s a dynamic performer who effortlessly moves tens of thousands of people with his invocations. Watching him, you can’t help but think about how much he delights in every moment.

From his beginnings in the post-punk band the Beatings and critically acclaimed hiphop group Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy (who toured with U2 and Public Enemy) Franti has remained a devoted defender of the underdog.

For a decade, Franti hosted the Power to the Peaceful free concerts in San Francisco, at first to support incarcerated political activist Mumia Abu Jamal, then as a platform to speak out against escalating violence around the globe. He’s made several trips to hot spots in the Middle East to see war’s human toll with his own eyes. In 2005, he made the film “I Know I’m Not Alone” about his travels through Iraq, Palestine and Israel.

“I made a commitment to myself years ago that I wouldn’t just read about what was happening in the world,” he says. “I needed to go and experience it.”

It was on these trips that he realized people don’t necessarily want to hear songs that bluntly address the ills of the world but rather songs that will offer them some escape from their difficulties.

“I wouldn’t want to live in a society where anger is a force that gets things done,” Franti says. “Some people react by throwing a trash can through a window. I’d rather go play music in a school, prison or war zone. Those are the ways I choose to affect change.”

The same week his 2009 smash “Say Hey (I Love You)” broke, eventually selling over 2-million downloads, Franti’s appendix ruptured and put him in the hospital close to death. It was another moment that changed his perspective on songwriting, leading to the triumphant tone of All People .

“I want to make music that is timeless,” Franti says. “At this point in my life when I turn on the radio and hear my song it means a lot to me. When I was a kid I would go on these long drives with my family I and still remember the songs we would listen to in the car. It means I’m part of somebody’s life passages. As an artist, I cherish those moments.”

WORKHOUSE BRIDES

WORKHOUSE BRIDES

NEIL McNAMEE + DEAN GARDNER

Workhouse Brides: a difficult band to pigeon-hole and a group of musicians who create self-indulgent music that’s both melodic and volatile.

Their first recording, ‘Trial By Fire’, introduced the band with a pounding drum beat, grizzly guitar lines, staccato vocals and ambiguous lyrics. The song’s video features an interesting tip of the cap to Scorsese, Keitel and DeNiro.

Second recording ‘ID’ is the band’s magnum opus, comprising six minutes of guitar music clearly influenced by a wide array of musical artists and genres.

With creativity coming from all elements of the act, this Whelan’s gig should entertain punters and invoke spirits (mostly Irish whiskey) in equal measure.

Workhouse Brides are most likely the loudest band in Dublin without a bass player. Their influences include red wine and beer.

//////////

Sal Vitro have just been announced to support rock legends Status Quo at their Dublin gig in The O2 this April 12th!!!

New Single “The Gettin’ Older Casanova” Out 7th March!

Seriously. These boys know how to cook a stand out album. Funky, groovy, soulful, rockin’. It’s all here!Marty Miller, RadioNova.

A truly knockout debut album. Welcome to Cirque du Sleaze!Louise Molony, Kerrang! Radio & Planet Rock.

Soulful beyond belief. There is only one thing wrong with Sal Vitro; their frontman Josh Dunford isn’t black!Smiley Bolger, ‘Vibe for Philo’

Sal Vitro are a dynamic and gritty stomp rock band, noted for their mesmerising live performances. Mixing ingredients from rock ‘n’ roll, blues, funk, soul and pop, they have created a sound and style of their own.

“The Gettin’ Older Casanova” is the lead track off Sal Vitro’s debut album “Cirque du Sleaze”, which was recorded in Jam Studios, Meath last year and is due for release in 2014. The album showcases an intricate weave of musical genres and character-driven, New Orleans-esque lyrics delivered with refreshing zeal and fervour. Lead vocalist, Josh Dunford, claims that “The Gettin’ Older Casanova” was inspired by an altercation he had with a group of middle-aged creeps in a Boston bar! Something to ask Josh to elaborate on in person perhaps…The song was one of the first written by Josh and lead guitarist, Owie Lumsden, for the band and it has been a Sal Vitro staple since day one.

Formed in Dublin in 2011, having met while working for the same male modelling agency, Sal Vitro are Josh Dunford (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Owie Lumsden (lead guitar, backing vocals), Rourke Bradley (bass, backing vocals), and John Cuddy (drums, backing vocals). All four have since matured into seasoned performers, touring Ireland extensively and playing well received introductory dates in the UK. Highlights include opening for Jack L, Pat McManus, and the legendary Thin Lizzy as part of their Farewell Tour to a sold out Olympia Theatre. The band were also honoured to be invited to perform at the 27th annual ‘Vibe for Philo’, playing to a capacity crowd at the Button Factory last year. The guys were only ecstatic to be invited to play again in January 2014 for a second year in a row which was held in Vicar Street!

Sal Vitro’s work to date has won many plaudits, including those from DJs Dave Fanning (2FM), Pat Courtenay (Radio Nova) and Marty Miller (Radio Nova). Their YouTube channel has racked up over 40,000 views so far!

To find the flavour of this sonic gumbo bring the maximum r’n’b laid down by The Who and Dr. John’s Louisiana ‘fonk’ to the boil, add in the rich guitar textures of The Stone Roses and season generously with the growly tones of an early Kings of Leon.

The music video for “The Getitin’ Older Casanova” was shot by Kerbute Productions and stars Owen Colgan or more commonly known as Buzz from Hardy Bucks! Check out the making of “The Gettin’ Older Casanova” video here:
