“The Art of Celebration Album Launch”

Rend Collective is an eclectic collective of multi-instrumentalists from the North of Ireland. An inherent desire for something spiritually substantive in our increasingly artificial world is exactly what brought the movement of friends together. United by a common purpose, these twenty-somethings began exploring the intersection between life, community and faith.

After many years in Ireland, the band stepped into into the unknown and began touring internationally. They have now grown into an international success with major tours with Chris Tomlin, MercyMe, Tenth Avenue North and Lecrae under their belts. This current year saw them reach a Top 10 radio success as well as a No.1 on iTunes Gospel chart.

Concerning the band itself Gareth, one Rend’s songwriters, comments,”We are a collective of people like a family and not just a band. We want our music to be an organic, honest and natural connection with God, something which is authentic and not artificial.”

STURGILL SIMPSON

Tickets priced €24 (incl booking fee) on sale Fri November 1st from www.whelanslive.com, www.tickets.ie, www.ticketmaster.ie & outlets nationwide.

Laura Cantrell is a country music artist based in New York City. Born in Nashville, TN, she came to New York to attend Columbia College, and found that her abiding interest in country music helped her stay connected with her family roots. That interest was the motivation behind her long-running radio program on WFMU in Jersey City, NJ, “The Radio Thrift Shop.” Beginning on WFMU in 1993, the program was a Saturday afternoon staple in the New York area for 13 years, then moved to WFMU.org and ran for two seasons on BBC Radio Scotland as a summer replacement in 2005 and 2006. In her ten-year recording career, Cantrell has released three acclaimed albums: “Not The Tremblin’ Kind,” “When The Roses Bloom Again,” and “Humming By The Flowered Vine.” She has toured extensively in the United Kingdom, Europe and Ireland, and was a favorite of pioneering British disc jockey John Peel, who called her 2000 album “Not The Tremblin’ Kind” “my favorite record of the last ten years, possibly my life.” Cantrell recorded several Peel sessions for the BBC from 2000-2004 and appeared on the first Peel Day program on Radio One commemorating the first anniversary of Peel’s death.

Cantrell’s music has been celebrated in the press including features in The New York Times, “O” Magazine, Elle, and the Wall Street Journal. Cantrell’s music has been featured on NPR’s “All Things Considered,” “On Point,” and “Weekend Edition.” She has performed on “A Prairie Home Companion,” “Mountain Stage,” and the “Grand Ole Opry,” and appeared on the television programs “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” and the Sundance Channel’s “Spectacle: Elvis Costello.” In recent years, she has been a contributor to The New York Times and www.VanityFair.com.
Her 2011 album Kitty Wells Dresses: Songs Of The Queen of Country Music was a recording she made in honour of one of her heroines, the great Kitty Wells. A meditation on femininity in country music, the set takes its title from an original song written in tribute to Wells.

No Way There From Here, her new 12-track album is Cantrell’s 5th record and was recorded in Nashville’s Beech House Studios. Cantrell collaborates with writers Tracyanne Campbell from Camera Obscura, Amy Allison and Frank Bruno.

“Each recording project presents a fresh question to answer about what you’re doing and why,” Cantrell says of the album. “For this record, where I’ve worked for the first time with mostly my own songs and point of view, the pressure I’ve felt is to find what suits each song and do it justice. It was challenging and exciting, because I have had to really define the sound.”

HIS CLANCYNESS

Whelanslive.com presents

HIS CLANCYNESS

plus guests

THE SHAKER HYMN

Having signed to FatCat in March 2013, His Clancyness is the alias of Jonathan Clancy. Born in Ottawa and raised between Canada and Italy, Clancy moved back and forth between the two countries up until his late teenage years, when he finally settled in Bologna.

Gaining early experience through playing in a number of hardcore / punk bands, and having toured the world in a couple of indie outfits, Jonathan struck out on his own back in 2009 and started to gain some early recognition across internet blogs when he began leaking out a series of bedroom-recorded psych-pop gems. Recording alone at home often late at night, writing and playing everything himself, he produced a steady stream of tracks prodding in different directions and comprising weird pop outbursts, fuzzy guitars, cloudy ambient texturing, warm drum machine pulses, and bitter-sweet chord progressions – all anchored by a particular melodic sensibility and Clancy’s bold, often reverb-drenched vocals.

A collection of these smudged and varied bedroom recordings was eventually compiled together in 2010 under the suitably murky title ‘Always Mist’. Originally self-released as a cassette in a tiny edition of 100 that sold out instantly, the collection was later re-released jointly by both Norwegian label Splendour and Italian label Secret Furry Hole in March 2012, this time re-mastered and expanded with the addition of seven new tracks. Palpable as an adventurous sprawl of sparking ideas, an intriguing if slightly uneven home-baked batch of varying fidelity / density / focus, the original release was picked in Altered Zones ‘Tapes of the Year’ in 2010, described as “a tender, clean, and consoling collection of snug little dream pop blankets to ball up in, marked by gliding harmonies into which Clancy injects his rich, wistful sigh… The simple arrangements and heartbreak hooks bypass the nerd centres, burrowing straight through the chest only to manifest themselves two minutes or so later as lumps in the throat and knots in the stomach.”

Hallmarked by this ability to emotionally affect and anchored in classic indie melodies, his songs deal in a very contemporary currency (home recording aesthetics, nods to peers, ) whilst fitting within/ drawing upon a wider lineage. An avowed rock and pop culture obsessive, Clancy cites a long and varied list of artists as influences – Swell Maps, Can, Bowie, Modern Lovers, Lee Hazlewood, Scott Walker, The Gun Club, Women, Stevie Nicks, Gastr Del Sol, Zombies and “just about every psychedelic pop nugget ever produced.” Listen in and you might also pick out traces of The Beach Boys, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Panda Bear and – especially on the newer material – Deerhunter, Kurt Vile, and Lower Dens. Such melophilia is also evident in a series of covers Jonathan has completed of songs by the likes of Eddie Cochrane, Ariel Pink, El Pierro Del Mar, and Altro.

“I love pop songs that don’t feel right. I like songs that get to the point pretty fast, then add repetition and texture,” he says. Where Those early His Clancyness tracks (conceived as just that – a spurt of individual tracks rather than as parts within the cohesive span of an album) often had a certain airy dreaminess, a kind of blurring of focus and amorphous stretching out, the new album, ‘Vicious’ – scheduled for release in October 2013 – arrives fully formed and immediately stood out as an impressively accomplished and completely self-assured album, a huge step forward.

Recorded in Detroit as a trio (including Paul Pieretto and Jacopo Borazzo on bass and drums) with producer Chris Koltay (Atlas Sound, Lotus Plaza, Akron Family, Dirtbombs, Liars), it is warm and precise, filled with an unfaltering procession of addictive, hook-filled tracks. The softer-edges of those earlier recordings are replaced by a dynamic of real drive and bite, where every part feels perfectly balanced and intended. The songs still stretch out expansively but everything about the record (from the writing to the playing and production) is bolder, more forceful, more cohesive and concise. The guitars are luminous and the whole is powerfully underpinned with a taut, punchy rhythmic spine that fits comfortably within a very modern American take on krautrock’s motorik propulsiveness.

Although the entirety of the music he has recorded to date has been written and played (and up until ‘Vicious’ produced) by himself, whilst on the road His Clancyness becomes a full band with friends Giulia Mazza (synths / keyboards / noise boxes / vocals / percussion), Emanuela Drei (bass, sampler, vocals) and Jacopo Borazzo (drums / percussion) helping out.

‘Vicious’ will be released by FatCat on October 7th, and preceded by the late May release of the 6-track long ‘Charade EP’, a limited edition cassette release which coincides with a short run of tour dates, where the band will support Deerhunter (Europe) and Widowspeak (UK). A full US / UK / EU tour is being planned for the Autumn.

Fiach Moriarty plays Whelans main venue on the 13th of November with the launch of his brand new single ‘Married to Music’!!!

Dublin singer-songwriter Fiach Moriarty released his debut record ‘So i’ in March 2010 to great acclaim leading Hot Press to state that ‘instrumentally as well as vocally, ‘So i’ is exceptionally resonant and richly textured with strings bringing a sense of the sublime to several tracks. Wonderful!’ The album was immediately named ‘Album of the Week’ on Ireland’s national broadcaster, RTÉ Radio 1.

Upon the release of his debut record the young Dubliner immediately went on the road with artists of the ilk of Mary Black, Ray Davies (Kinks) and Declan O’Rourke and even appeared as a guest guitarist with Fairground Attraction chanteuse Eddi Reader for her appearance on The Late Late Show. Fiach’s record and performances also garnered praise from a host of musical heroes of his including Gilbert O’Sullivan and Paul Brady.

Fiach is currently in recording for his second record, provisionally titled ‘The Revolution’, due for release in early 2014.

‘A real music man with an openness and bravery I rarely hear, when I hear Fiach I enjoy every note’ – Eddi Reader

Here’s what the press are saying about these guys!!

Feelgood alt-pop work, which contributes towards rather than detracts from an enjoyable debut. Anthem-esque with clever lyrics” -The Sunday Times

It’s honest, well played. Impressive” -Mail On Sunday

“Take the squally synth of Currents, where the four-piece brilliantly meddle with tempo and texture; Empire Circus have hit upon a formula that largely works” -The Irish Times

Empire Circus have delivered an impressively entertaining debut”- Hotpress

“Empire Circus’s début EP strikes a nice balance between shamelessly conventional funky pop and alternative leaning rock“- Golden Plec

“By the time the last song ends you will have enjoyed this album, from ‘There Is A Light’ to ’Currents’, both being at either ends of the spectrum. Empire Circus know the science and have doubled checked the math”- MRU

The Story:
Empire Circus are a four piece Alt Pop outfit who have tapped into the panache of Two Door Cinema Club, the demeanor of Arcade Fire and the general cool suave of Gorillaz… then morphed out at the other side with a resonant sound under the guise of Empire Circus.

Having lived and played music full time in the USA together for 7 years, they returned to Ireland in 2008 opened a Music School in South County Dublin – www.puremusic.ie. Then in the spring & summer of 2012 the band spent time writing, demoing and working feverishly on creating music. They wrote some songs. Actually they wrote lots of songs. Some they really enjoyed playing, others… not so much. So they took the fun ones and went to a studio in Brooklyn and crafted an album of 12 tunes that made them want to pull some pretty ridiculous dance moves. This was all done under the influence of Producer/Engineer/Mixer; Bryce Goggin (Ramones, The Morning Glories, Antony and the Johnsons).

Empire Circus’ sound is all about the thrill in rhythm and melody. Their debut album, including songs such as “A Day in the Life of a Superhero”, “I Know Better” and “All I Need” will assuredly leave you powerless against the urge to get up, get crazy, dance and sing like you never have before.

Band statement: The Future (the end is nowhere in sight): We still have dreams of conquering the world and selling the t-shirt, but for now we will be bringing dodgy dance moves and above all, music that electrifies the soul.

Empire Circus’ self-titled debut album is OUT NOW. Link is here: https://itunes.apple.com/ie/album/empire-circus/id680069958

———————————————————–

Sal Vitro are a dynamic and gritty stomp rock band, noted for their mesmerising live performances. Mixing ingredients from rock ‘n’ roll, blues, funk, soul and pop, they have created a sound and style all of their own.

Their debut album Cirque du Sleaze, recorded in Jam Studios, Co. Meath, is due for release in 2014. It showcases an intricate weave of musical genres and character-driven, New Orleans-esque lyrics delivered with refreshing zeal and fervour.

Seriously. These boys know how to cook… A stand out album.
Funky, groovy, soulful, rockin’. It’s all here.” – Marty Miller, Radio Nova

Formed in Dublin in 2011, having met while working for the same male modelling agency, Sal Vitro are: Josh Dunford, lead vocals & rhythm guitar; Owie Lumsden, lead guitar & backing vocals; Rourke Bradley, bass & backing vocals and John Cuddy, drums & backing vocals.

All four have since matured into seasoned performers, touring Ireland extensively and playing some well received introductory dates in the UK. Highlights include opening for Jack L, Pat McManus, and the legendary Thin Lizzy as part of their Farewell Tour to a sold out Olympia Theatre.

…if young Dublin band Sal Vitro were intimidated by either the big stage or the musical icons they were supporting, they didn’t show it. Instead they tore through a sizzling set of hard rock numbers that felt fresh, yet totally in tune with the classic rock sound of bands like Thin Lizzy. The sold out crowd were more than impressed by the young rockers, chanting their name and roaring in applause…” – Bernard O’Rourke, GoldenPlec

The band were also honoured to be invited to perform at the 27th annual ‘Vibe for Philo’, playing to a capacity crowd at the Button Factory.

Soulful beyond belief. There is only one thing wrong with Sal Vitro;
their frontman Josh Dunford isn’t black!” – Smiley Bolger, ‘Vibe for Philo’ 2013

Sal Vitro’s work to date has won many plaudits, including those from DJs Dave Fanning (2FM), Pat Courtenay (Radio Nova) and Marty Miller (Radio Nova). Their YouTube channel has racked up 30,000+ hits so far, and their social media pages are growing steadily.

To find the flavour of this sonic gumbo, bring the maximum r’n’b laid down by The Who and Dr. John’s Louisiana ‘fonk’ to the boil, add in the rich guitar textures of The Stone Roses and season generously with the growly tones of an early Kings of Leon.

A truly knockout debut album. Welcome to Cirque du Sleaze!

MIDNIGHT HOUR w/ DARIA + GLIMMERMEN

featuring –

DARIA and GLIMMERMEN

Upstairs@Whelan’s from Midnight.

Doors: 11:30pm

Whelanslive.com is proud to bring you The Midnight Hour. Showcasing the best new talent in Ireland.

——–

DARIA is a rock band based in Angers, France. The line-up of the group is Etienne (guitar), Germain (bass), Cam (vocals, guitar) and Arnaud (drums). Since its beginning in 2000, daria has developed a reputation for its loud and aggressive yet melodic music that echoes the sounds of American alternative rock bands such as Weezer, Fugazi, Foo Fighters or The Jesus Lizard. Their intense live shows have taken them across Europe and Canada, playing with bands such as Against Me, The Libertines, Qui (David Yow’s latest band), Les Thugs etc 2 April 2012 will see the band release its third album entitled ‘Red Red‘(Yotanka/Differ-Ant). This new effort was recorded in 10 days, full live conditions, everybody in the same room, minimum overdubs and computer sheits by producer Olivier Fournier at Tostaky Studio, Angers- France. It was later mixed at Fournier’s own studio- The Studioscope. The release has been followed by an extensive tour leading the band to U.S.A., Portugal, Spain, Ireland, UK, Germany, …
Beware, daria is coming for you!

GLIMMERMEN formed in 2010 from the ashes of revered Irish bands Boxes (Gavin Cowley, vocals, guitar), Jackbeast (J Bassetti, stand-up bass, vocals) and Holy Ghost Fathers (Phil Murray, drums, vocals), Glimmermen are a stripped-down three piece that take rock and roll back to its primitive core. Having quickly earned a reputation for their intense live shows, the band released their debut EP “Satellite People” last year to widespread acclaim and comparisons to Television, Pop Group and Mission of Burma. Decamping to Magpie Cage studio in Baltimore last year as Hurricane Sandy was battering the eastern seaboard, the trio hunkered down with ex-Jawbox frontman J Robbins at the controls to record their debut album. Their intention was to capture the sound of a band playing live in a room to two-inch tape, eschewing frills or effects, giving the music room to breath. The result is a stark, honest life-affirming collection of songs. Built on the rock-solid foundations of Phil Murray’s inventive drumming and J Bassetti’s propulsive stand-up bass, “I’m Dead” deals with themes of life, love, regret, paranoia and hope with Gavin Cowley’s sinewy guitar work and distinctive vocals using the sparse arrangements to maximum effect. Kicking off with the celebratory ska-infused call-to-arms of the tile track, “I’m Dead” is an engaging journey from start to finish, from the menacing spoken-word post-rock blues on “Angels & Devils” to the wisftul pop of “This Town” through to the haunting finale “Home”. With “I’m Dead”, Glimmermen have announced their arrival as a band that is very much alive and in the moment.

This mixed heritage has driven Della Lupa’s unique sound, which encompasses Latino based tempos, Jazz melodies influenced by Asiatic style scales and a Folky lyrical structure. Della Lupa’s debut EP, ‘Of The She Wolf’ was produced by Jag Jago (The Maccabees, Ghost of A Thousand, Cave Painting). ‘Of the She Wolf’ was released in late June 2013. The supporting shows in “London’s legendary music venues” such as The Troubador and The Bedford are establishing the band as a powerful live act.

KOKOPELLI

In Hopi mythology, Kokopelli was the God of fertility, often depicted with a humpback and playing the flute. Thankfully, neither of the ladies that make up the band Kokopelli fit such a description. Bo Lucas and Hayleigh King concentrate on sultry, seductive interplay between guitar and vocals. Weeping slide guitar by Hayleigh perfectly compliments the country tinged blues that exude from songstress Bo. Absolutely worth catching at one of their many gigs around London and Brighton, and not to be missed in smaller, intimate venues where the passion of the songs really comes alive.

LUST LOST + ATMOSPHERIC FEARS

November 5th 2013

Womens Murder Club are a 5 man strong musical collective from Dublin City. Their goal is not fame nor money, they have no interest in superficial things like top ten hits or traditional thinking. They simply wish to develop a sound that is their own. A sound that is contemporary yet classical.A sound that can accurately articulate yet transcend the gamut of emotions and experience that five twenty year olds share in this world.

Dublin five piece Womens Murder Club will once again be extending their line up and taking to the stage to showcase their ability to create a “voyage of stuttered rhythms, coldwave cinematics and swirling soundscapes.”( Stephen Purcell-WeAreNoise.com) Support on the night shall come in the form of the dark pop of Lust Lost and atmospheric Fears.

THE STRAY BIRDS

Musiclee.ie presents

THE STRAY BIRDS

plus guests

When The Stray Birds take the stage, the spotlight falls on three voices raised in harmony above the raw resonance of wood and strings. It is a sound drawn from the richness of American folk music traditions, spun with a stirring subtlety and grace. From bustling street corners to silent halls, their performances speak to an uncompromising reverence for songs.

Hailing from southeastern Pennsylvania, The Stray Birds have crafted an original sound that draws upon the richness of American folk music traditions. Talented multi-instrumentalists who perform with captivating musicality, the signature power of their sound lies in outstanding songwriting that soars in three-part harmony.

Maya de Vitry grew up with one foot firmly planted in old-time music festival dirt and the other on stage with symphony orchestras. She has traveled across North America and Europe as a street musician, and now brings a fiddle, a banjo, a guitar, a compelling voice, and award-winning songwriting to The Stray Birds.

Also a classically-trained violinist, Oliver Craven has spent the past four years lending his talents on the fiddle, mandolin, and guitar to stages across North America in various acoustic outfits. The Stray Birds feature Craven’s arresting original songs and vocals.

A classically-trained bassist who now artfully dances between a myriad of styles, Charles Joseph Muench brings his unshakeable groove and powerful vocals to The Stray Birds. He can also be found playing the banjo at breakfast.

Formed when founding members of two of the mightiest forces in American roots music – The Red Stick Ramblers and The Pine Leaf Boys – came together, they have unashamedly re-visited ‘50s swamp pop stylings, to fill some of the best-known dance halls of Southwest Louisiana…and emerge as new ambassadors for the music.

In the latest UK review to appear, in this month’s Songlines magazine, Doug Loach sums things up this way:
“If you’ve ever been nagged by the feeling that all Cajun and zydeco music was starting to sound a bit too much like the same old thing, The Revelers will toss that notion back on your ears. This is Louisiana-bred party music sustained by the sonorous signature of its native milieu, but perked up by an injection of contemporary pop, rock and R&B”

THE ACADEMIC

One of the most exciting young bands to come on the Irish music scene in the last few years, say hello to ‘The Academic’.  Forming in their early teens in 2011 , the Mullingar quartet have been building quite a reputation for their live shows and with the average age of the band now only 18 , the future looks bright for this new indie outfit from the midlands.

The band is made up of Craig Fitzgerald on lead vocals/guitar alongside Dean Gavin (Drums) and brothers Stephen (Bass) and Matt Murtagh (Lead guitar).  The band has spent much of 2013 writing new material with a debut EP expected in early 2014.

Recently ‘The Academic’ have opened for The Riptide Movement, The Strypes and Indian rock gods ‘Thermal and a Quarter’ just to name a few, the Mullingar four piece are a complete original act with a sound that strikes both the right essence of a hit with the vibe of an indie outfit with mass appeal.

PETE MOLINARI

Whelanslive.com presents

PETE MOLINARI

plus guests

STU DALY

**VENUE HAS BEEN CHANGED FROM THE VILLAGE TO WHELANS! ALL ORIGINAL TICKETS ARE STILL VALID!**

Pete Molinari’s fourth album Theosophy sits at that point where, as Muddy Waters put it, the blues had a baby and they called it rock ‘n’ roll. Here soul, country, blues and rockabilly collide in perfect symbiosis. The songs tell tales of life, love, literature and compact the singer/songwriter’s many decades of musical influences and his globe-spanning, wandering lifestyle down into a collection that is as uplifting as it lush, as classic-sounding as it is contemporary-minded.

Simply put it is the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll distilled down and delivered in neat shots.

This spirit is there in the Southern fried spiritual of ‘What I Am I Am’ and the stomping, shimmying sounds of ‘Evangeline’, which conjures images of the Beatles reeling down the Reeperbahn at 3am, their heads full of purple hearts. It’s there in the fragile Roky Erickson-esque country of ‘Dear Marie’ and ‘Look To The Wind’, or the early Stones strut and warm sun-baked Cornershop-style melodies of ‘I Got It All Indeed’.

The evolution of Theosophy has taken in discussions and/or pre-production sessions throughout 2011 and 2012 with a variety of friends and cohorts including Vincent Gallo, Andrew Weatherall, The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach – with whom Pete has collaborated – Liam Watson, whose Toe Rag Studio has been home to previous recordings, and Grammy award winning producer/mixer Tchad Blake, whose roll call includes everyone from RZA to T-Bone Burnett to Tom Waits.

Working with the latter in Wales helped develop the songs before Pete decamped to the Isle Of Wight to record in an old water tower once belonging to Queen Victoria and which is rumoured to be haunted. Here producers Jim and Rob Homes and musicians Thomas Gardner, Rupert Brown, Antony Truckell and Joe Glossop helped make this Pete Molinari’s most collaborative effort to date.

“The recurring phrase while making the album was ‘a sense of abandon’,” explains Pete. “It was about relinquishing control , creating a vibe and letting the mood of the moment dictate the song. Because doing what I do, the music is worthless without feeling.”

“I don’t want to sound overly spiritual and would normally cringe when musicians talk about ‘the magic’,” he continues. “But – yeah – something happened when I got to the Isle Of Wight. Working with people like Billy Childish or Liam was great but we recorded really quickly. I mean, my first album was recorded live, in one day, in Billy’s kitchen. Whereas these songs were given space to breath and the guys brought in all sorts of ideas, which turned it into a group effort. No restrictions. That’s a first for me.”

Theosophy marks a break from Pete Molinari’s past in all ways. After three perfectly formed and critically acclaimed albums it sees him embracing new collaborations and new ideas. Inspiration has come from unexpected sources, including The Theosophical Society, an organisation formed in 1875 “to promote an understanding of the Esoteric Teachings”, and whose interest spans science, mysticism, religion and the arts.

“It’s an organisation whose purpose has possibly been misconstrued,” explains Pete. “People align it with the occult, but really it’s about the study of ancient wisdom. Two of my favourite works are by a founding member, Helena Blavatsky – Isis Unveiled and The Secret Doctrine. I’ve not joined any group – I just attend lectures, in London or New York. I think as an artist you need to constantly take in new ideas.”

Ideas and songs are the anchor for Pete Molinari. Chatham born and bred, his Maltese, Italian and Egyptian blood, sartorially sharp style and early love for the work of Billie Holliday, Jack Kerouac, Coltrane and Leadbelly set him apart from his peers. After doing “hundreds” of menial jobs he gravitated to New York’s Greenwich Village where, like forefathers Dylan, Guthrie and Ochs before him he cut his teeth in the clubs and bars.

Recognising that music is measured not by Youtube hits or Tumblr followers but by road miles and friendships made – Pete’s steady rise has been one song, one gig at a time. Dues have been paid, though he baulks at the word ‘career’; this is more than that. This is a way of life.

His return to England saw him begin his recording career in earnest in 2006, with early reviews noting that if Jim Jarmusch and David Lynch conspired to create the perfect walk-on stranger in an imaginary cinematic collaboration, it would look and sound like Pete Molinari. In a time when “authentic” is an increasingly amorphous concept, and the epithet “troubadour” wrongly applied to any young pup with a travel card, Pete Molinari’s music inspires many. “I’m slightly uncomfortable with the term singer/songwriter,” he laughs. “Once it used to suggest a romantic, gypsy spirit or a wandering balladeer – music made by those with the souls of poets – but now it can mean anyone with a guitar. So now when people ask what type of music I play I say – only half joking – that I’m a singer of ballads and Neopolitan love songs.”

Those in the know know and without the fanfare of hype, Pete can count among his fans – amongst others – Bruce Springsteen, Paul Weller, Jools Holland, Bob Dylan, Richard Hawley, The Black Keys and Elvis Presley’s backing band The Jordanaires, with who Molinari recorded in Nashville in 2009. Simply put he has risen to become one of Britain’s finest country, blues and rock ‘n’ roll singer.

Now 2013 sees Pete back living in the Medway Delta – well, Rochester, Kent – after stints residing in Nashville, New York and London. With Theosophy his most assured, diverse and richest album yet the open road beckons once again.

“If it is about anything then this album is about just letting go in the best possible way,” says Pete. “It’s about abandonment in all ways – creatively, lyrically, musically. It’s about looking forward. It’s about letting things happen rather than making them. It’s a good way to work – and to live.”

Prescedent Entertainment and Exodus Records announce the release  of Feels Like California, the follow up to Mark Huff’s critically acclaimed release Gravity. Mark Huff joins forces again with Nashville producer Adam Landry at  his Playground Sound studio, bringing in session stalwarts Fred Eltringham (drums), James Haggerty (bass) and Stuart Mathis (guitar). Combining elements of classic British rock and Route 66-inspired  American pop, Huff’s sophisticated and mature songwriting on Feels Like California solidifies his evolution as an artist who is clearly comfortable wearing his influences on his tattered sleeves. “Only Birds are Free” is an anthemic sing song after only one listen while “Scar so Easy” is a searing pledge from one forlorn heart to another.

—————–

Down At The Well Of Wishes, released in 2012, is Jon Byrd’s second critically acclaimed solo recording. A straightforward mix of barroom exuberance and front porch restraint, it follows his 2004 release, Byrd’s Auto Parts. Both albums released to acclaim; critics have called him “a terrifically accomplished, versatile singer,” and his songwriting “superbly talented.” From the heartfelt rendering of the trials we  share in “When it Starts to Rain,” to “In a Chest of Skin and Bone,” written with longtime collaborator Butch Primm, the songs of Down At The Well Of Wishes get right to the heart of the matter––and resonate long after the listening is through.

Laura Elizabeth Hughes is a new Dublin singer/songwriter whose voice and music have captured fans around the world in large numbers before she had ever played a gig. In one recent 24hr period her bedroom recorded videos of her singing had ¼ million views on YouTube, bringing her total to over 1.5 million and thousands of subscribers. Dublin live club scene learning her stagecraft. The repeat bookings and music blog reviews show her music is having the same impact in the real world as it has online. Already Laura has a songwriting ability far beyond her young years and a powerful, glacial voice that is as pure as the driven snow. During her performances you could hear a pin drop and there there are always moments when the hairs stand up on the back of everyone’s neck. Laura may be a new talent, but it’s rare that a talent arrives so fully formed. This summer Laura launched a Fundit campaign to finance her debut EP and it became one of the most highly supported music campaigns ever on Fundit. Tyler Ward, “The Kid from Colorado,” was an unknown gifted singer/songwriter, living in his parent’s basement until, one day late in 2008, he uploaded his first YouTube video.

His intention was to showcase his abilities as an engineer and producer in an effort to procure business for his studio, but kids from around the world were more interested in his abilities as a singer and performer. Tyler’s fans ushered him into internet stardom before he even had a chance to consider it an achievable dream.

Five years, 1,300,000+ subscribers and 340,000,000+ views later, Tyler Ward is an empire with fans that span the globe. He will be releasing his new LP from Sony Records in fall 2013 while continuing to be a pioneer in the YouTube space with his steady flow of ever-‐evolving videos.
