THE BAMBIR

THE BAMBIR

– PLAY THE FRONT BAR –

The Bambir have gathered their childhood appreciation for hard rock and smuggled vinyl, Armenian traditional music and poetry, pulsing beats and whirling trances, ancient tales and pagan wails and pumped it into their own unique sound. Even though they’ve only been in Ireland for a few months, they’re already causing a stir with their music, their tribal nature, and their beards.

The sounds of Narek Barseghyan (song-writer, vocals, guitar), Arman Kocharyan (bass guitar, vocals), Arik Grigoryan (song-writer, flutes and woodwinds, vocals, percussion), and Vardan Paremuzyan (drums, percussion, vocals) are hard to describe. They’ve heard it all- “Armenian metal with flutes!” “Combination Led Zeppelin and Gogol Bordello!” “Folk-rock, but loud! Really loud!” “Mars Volta punching Jethro Tull in the face!”  Narek prefers to call it Archive Rock- taking a little piece of everything from the history of rock ‘n’ roll. “An artist’s job is to search,” Narek says, basing his lyrics in metamorphosis and the imitation of reality or your imperfect idea of it.

Join them in the front bar every Wednesday in April for some music, some beverages, and the occasional poetry reading.  Whatever you need to get you through the week.  Free-in, 8pm!

TRAD FEST w/ THE BONNY MEN + MOSSY NOLAN

Whelanslive.com presents

Featuring

THE BONNY MEN

MOSSY NOLAN

The Bonny Men

“This is a stunning debut album, filled with energy and references to the best Irish ensemble work from the heydays of the 1970’s. Its retro and modern. They’ve a huge future ahead of them, they’ll be the big bookable trad band for 2012”, Seán Laffey, Irish Music Magazine.

In the twelve months that The Bonny Men have been together, they have emerged as the most talked about, and exciting young band to emerge from the trad/folk scene in Ireland.

Their debut album, self entitled ‘The Bonny Men’, was recorded live over four days in the internationally renowned Windmill Lane Recording Studios. This album captures the raw energy and life with which these young musicians play music.

Their unique sound features two sets of siblings, both from well known musical families. Barry Lyons takes on the role of guitar, while on bodhrán is his brother Conor, twice winner of the World Bodhrán Championships. On uilleann pipes is Oireachtas champion Maitiú Ó Casaide and his younger sister Natalie plays the piano. All-Ireland winner Moss Landman is on flute, Turlough Chambers is on fiddle and Adam Whelan is on bouzouki.

Íde Nic Mhathúna is the lead vocalist in the band. The Bonny Men’s singing capabilities are quite remarkable. Íde can sing in both Irish and English, and her powerful voice is unforgettable once heard. Adding to this, Conor has a strong distinctive singing voice with a repertoire of his own, and all band members are adept at backing vocals and harmonies, giving each song they sing a full wall of sound. Their repertoire of songs range from contemporary, folk and sean ós.

Mossy Nolan Mossy Nolanis a singer & musician based in Dublin, Ireland who has emerged over the 12 months as one of Ireland’s most exciting and talked about young folk musicians. Mossy plays a mix of original folk influenced string music & songs as well as very unique arrangements of traditional material. His debut album features heartfelt well crafted songs along with some rip-roaring odd shaped tunes.

Mossy has been compared musically to Planxty, Andy Irvine & Sean Tyrrell, and pocesses spectacular vocal ability. Live sound consists of Mossy on vocals, Bouzouki and mandolin with Colm Mcgowan on guitars, vocals and effects.

Recent Gig Highlights: Mossy has a had an exciting year leading up to the launch of his debut album with appearances at the spirit of folk festival, where he was described as one of the best acts of the weekend and also featured on Donal Dineen’s radio show on several occasions in the past year.

Mossy is also a part of Cavan singer, Lisa O’Neill’s band and played a list of high profile gigs in 2011 including support to Villagers in the 2011 Marley park series of summer gigs as well as an appearance on Other Voices 9.

ENSEMBLE ECONOMIQUE

Whelanslive.com presents

ENSEMBLE ECONOMIQUE

+ DIAMOND DAGGER

For fans of Ennio Morricone, Goblin, John Carpenter, Autechre, György Ligeti, Fabio Frizzi,

Ensemble Economique

“gently meandering yet also constantly threatening score for every introspective trip you could possibly be afraid of, undeniably beautiful but at the same time painfully unsettling, serving as a reminder that we’ll never know if we’re still here in only seven minutes’ time” – No Fear Of Pop

“Pyle has rendered a tensile world of feeling through his score and in the end you’re left wondering what will happen to his and your own imaginary characters next.” – Raven Sings The Blues

Brian Pyle’s (one half of improv/experimental unit Starving Weirdos) Ensemble Economique project is like the polar opposite of SoCal’s Sun Araw: while Cameron’s music is the epitome of tropical bliss and relaxed meditative high on the beach, Ensemble Economique is like a bad trip somewhere in the tropics, like stumbling straight into a voodoo ceremony while being high as a kite: things may seem like a joke at first but it stops being funny very quickly and suddenly you’re terrified and you want to run away. But you can’t.

Over the past few years EE has begun to blossom into a force of atmospheric synth propulsion. Evolving from early sound sketches into fully formed soundtracks filled with longing, paranoia and encroaching darkness; his songs have come to exemplify the current synth resurgence while also rising above it to achieve a larger vision. Crossing The Pass, By Torchlight is undoubtedly Pyle’s most complex and complete album to date. It unfolds as a narrative landscape that’s as dense as the most poured over musical scores and equally as emotionally complex. The swelling single “To Feel The Night As It Really Is”, which first appeared on its own, is now entwined in a album wrought with cracked glass emotions, wire wrapped tension and a bittersweet ebb of ennui. Though there is no companion script, it feels as if characters rise and fall, weep and sigh throughout the course of the album. Pyle has rendered a tensile world of feeling through his score and in the end you’re left wondering what will happen to his and your own imaginary characters next.

BIOG

ROCK AND ROLL FROM LIMERICK CITY, IRELAND As seen on RTÉs ‘Dave Fanning’s The 11th Hour’ and ‘Under Ether’. ‘THE DEVIL IN MUSIC’ – 2011 ALBUM OF THE YEAR (UII UK) No. 19 – DAN HEGARTY 2FM / TOP 50 IRISH ALBUMS OF 2011 Fox Jaw Bounty Hunters debut album ‘The Devil In Music’ is OUT NOW! Available on iTunes and in all good music stores nationwide (Rep. of Ireland Only). With two EPs under their belt, this band has left a sense of anticipation in the air with their live shows as of late, with fans always wanting more. 2010 saw the band return to the studio to record their debut album with long time friend Owen Lewis, who has worked with such acts as REM, Flogging Molly, Hole, Snow Patrol, Paulo Nutini & more. Now after months locked away behind closed doors, perfecting every last second for the armada of songs that is their debut album, entitled The Devil In Music. Fox Jaw Bounty Hunters from Limerick City, is made up of four gentleman; Ronan Mitchell (vox/guitar/keys), Morgan Nolan (guitar/b.vox/keys), Shane Serrano (drums/b.vox/clarinet) and Sean O’Mahony (bass/b.vox). Despite their ages, they have many years experience in the world music scene, churning out music to the masses, from punk rock and metal to traditional Irish. In late 2007, after years of touring with their past bands, they found themselves together in a practice room, collectively-minded, agreeing that they had exhausted their current projects. Undefeated and heavily inspired, they created Fox Jaw Bounty Hunters; a rock and roll band with a seductive and gloomy sound, ignoring all trends of the current music scene. A band with a long and varied list of influences that blend and create songs from unstoppable head bopping to horror harmonies and sublime silence. Fox Jaw Bounty Hunters are pretty much a well oiled machine by this stage. From being fresh out of the studio at the beginning of the year, they have since released 3 singles, released the highly critically acclaimed debut album ‘The Devil In Music’, embarked on countless tours across Ireland including a quick string of dates in London despite the apocalyptic riots! Many festival appearances including being added to the Main Stage at Indiependence Festival to share the boards with Editors & Therapy? They were added to the lineup of Guinness Arthur’s Day 2011 performing to a sold out crowd at Limerick’s Big Top. They have had their music picked up by Becks Vier for a TV advertising campaign, featured on a special edition flip cover of Hotpress Magazine, Ireland’s premier music magazine, featured on the Jagermeister Freezer Sessions Compilation CD and Tour, was invited on the IMRO Showcase 20th Anniversary tour, ‘Album Of The Year’ Awards, countless amounts of airplay, music video broadcasts, radio sessions, interviews, reviews and made many new fans made along the way, most notably 2FMs Dave Fanning, Dan Hegarty & Cormac Battle. The list goes on and on…

WALLIS BIRD

MCD.ie presents…

WALLIS BIRD

+ guests

Wallis Bird has announced a Whelan’s Show for October 24th. Tickets are priced at €19 (including booking fee) on-sale from Ticketmaster outlets and online at www.ticketmaster.ie. On-sale Friday July 6th.

Wallis Bird is wild. Wallis Bird is unpredictable. And she is contradictory!

The best way to sum-up an artist who combines so many different styles is with the person themselves – hence the reason for self-titling her new upcoming album. A musical magpie whose mature, self-affirming songs display an unusual emotional breathes, Wallis defies categorization. The Irish artist has paid her dues, shredding her fingers and breaking string after string from the sheer force of playing on stages small and large across Europe, and throwing her entire soul into each performance with a level of energy that makes her an unassailable force of nature. Wallis Bird cannot and should not be pigeonholed easily. Capable of the delicate, gossamer-thin ballads that her tiny 5ft2 frame would suggest, she can also summon up a whirl wind of passion and rage in the blink of an eye. Her performances can transition seamlessly from the defiant anthems that can motivate thousands of festival goers into a rousing sing-along, to the most hushed and fragile ballads that can captivate an audience into a spellbound silence.

Wallis Bird’ was written and recorded in 3 places that, while geographically separate, were all deliberately chosen to impose their unique atmospheres onto the songs. From the communist broadcasting station in Berlin, of the former GDR where the government broadcast it’s propaganda until the Berlin wall came down, to an isolated ghost ridden cottage on a godforsaken cliff edge in Ireland during the worst snow storms in 30 years, to her own flat in Brixton South London. The result is a record that strives to make sense of the chaos around us all!

This is Wallis’s third Album which follows her debut ‘Spoons’ and 2009’s ‘New Boots’, both of which saw her garner critical acclaim. A double meteor award winner in Ireland, it’s not surprising she has played at some of the biggest festivals in Europe.

*** ‘The sheer visceral energy of Wallis Bird could kick-start an entire economy’ – The Irish Times.

Wallis Bird has something special, she has ability to mystify and captivate her audience. Her music is unpredictable and exhilarating while also being emotive and touching.
