SONG CYCLE

New weekly singer songwriter showcase

Every Monday – Now in Whelan’s Front Bar

Curator – OLLIE COLE

This week featuring:

SARAH O’BRIEN

JOHN STUBBS

YASMIN CHAUDHRY

“Songs stay alive in the same way that memories do, and being alive they grow up and undergo changes and develop. If a song is too weak to do that, if it is lacking in sufficient stamina and will to endure sadly it will not survive.” Nick Cave – The Secret Life Of The Love Song

Whelan’s are currently accepting submissions for their new weekly singer songwriter showcase. Birth and blossom of great songs has always being something that Whelan’s has been uniquely privileged to be a part to. It makes sense then for us to finally offer a platform for local and non local acts to experiment, sing and share in the friendly informal setting of Whelan’s upstairs. Taking our cues from our favourite artist’s musings on the creative process (Van Dyke Parks lends us the title from his seminal 1967 opus) this night offers artists a fresh new stage to breathe life into songs, experiment with ideas or simply just play for the sheer enjoyment of it.

Each week will feature three to four acts playing 30 minutes. Song Cycle kicks off on Monday May 2nd 2011, entry is free and all are welcome.

Please contact songcycle@whelanslive.com with submissions.

I HEART THE MONSTER HERO & YOU KISS BY THE BOOK

Whelanslive.com is proud to bring you The Midnight Hour. Showcasing the best new talent in Ireland. …………….///………./………. I Heart The Monster Hero: “I Love The Monster Hero is winsome musical collage, a mash-up of primitive sounds that toe the line between lo-fi and no-fi but together manage to engender an instinctively hooking, bubbly sunshine pop. The rough, gleeful, quirk addled qualities of the band are sublimely showcased on “Toni Bailey”, a synthetic, buoyant blast of distortion and sparkling chimes and “Little Gem”, which, with its simple, slightly coarse guitar lines and layered vocals, will stick like velcro.” brain tumors for breakfast blog listen: http://breakingtunes.com/iheartthemonsterhero http://iheartthemonsterhero.bandcamp.com/track/little-gem-original-demo-version …………….///………./………. You Kiss By The Book: The guys recorded an album of winning simplicity live at Simon’s house with the help of sound engineer Steve Fannigan. The result is Bear Leader, a limited edition vinyl released with a free CD enclosed, available on bandcamp and in Elastic Witch. The album’s on Hefty Horse records, an imprint that will be familiar to those who’ve attended the gigs Simon has put on in Anseo, upstairs in Whelans and elsewhere. The guys will be releasing their new album in June 2012 with a sneaky single to come before hand. listen here: http://breakingtunes.com/youkissbythebook http://youkissbythebook.bandcamp.com/ http://www.cockandbulltv.com/artists/ykbtb/

LUCY ROSE

Aiken Promotions presents

LUCY ROSE

+ guests

Two singles in, and with her star firmly in the ascendant, Warwickshire songstress Lucy Rose is making her own destiny and shaping her future like no other new artist. A mixture of true grit, sheer dedication and an unshakeable sense of self has all lead Lucy to the kind of status that most new artists dream of but can only achieve through record company clout and bucks. Lucy Rose has had none of this but her heart-stoppingly poignant songs and cracked porcelain voice see her entering 2012 with Youtube hits, radio plays and crowds like nobody else out there.  Such is her fan-base, that she now sells out five hundred capacity venues with ease.  Her first in-store at Rough Trade East in November was so over-subscribed that fifty latecomers were stuck outside.  And at the tender age of twenty-two, Lucy is being tipped by the great and the good as the one New British Artist who may stick around longer than any of the other fly-by-night contenders.

Along with press accolades, including Lucy’s first ever front cover in January 2012 for The Fly and new band features at Sunday Times (Culture), NME, Daily Mirror, Music Week, etc, etc. Lucy Rose has been clocking up the airplay counts too.  A Record of the Week and playlist at 6 Music for last single ScarRadio 4 featured artist on Loose Ends, Radio 2 spot plays and session confirmations, as well as round the clock plays from every specialist DJ at Radio 1 for both singles (Middle of the Bed and Scar), including daytime spins fromFearne Cotton, show it’s not just the press getting excited about Lucy Rose.

Lucy’s journey began, when she hopped on a train to London leaving behind the house in which she grew up in rural Warwickshire and struck out for the big city and the big time.  Armed with an acoustic guitar and an unstoppable dedication, Lucy played every open-mic imaginable, she met people on the way who are still with her now and with their support and her graft she learned the ropes.  As her songs and sentiments spread their warmth through the iciest of hearts, Lucy became that most modern of phenomenon; she went ‘viral’.  Her biggest video has clocked up over 600,000 views and on average her sessions and videos are receiving 250,000 views each.

Monday 27th February 2012 brings a third single from Lucy Rose, Red Face.  The debut exclusive play has been made by Huw Stephens as part of the Radio 1 daytime take over and feedback already suggests that the song is an exciting departure and growth from her trademark vocal delivery.  In moving forward, Lucy decided to return home to record her debut album.  Setting up in the basement where she once taught herself guitar, Lucy, the producer Charlie Hugall, recording team and band are folding down their beds and mic’ing up the mixing desk.  Expected in Summer 2012 and with a support tour to Noah & the Whale confirmed, be prepared for a confessional long player of disarming intimacy and candid truth.  To quote the Daily Star “So simple she makes Adele look try-hard”

Lucy’s single ‘Red Face’ was released on 27th February on Fauna Records.

“Each song is a confessional of her most tightly clasped secrets” The Fly

“A voice that could melt the stoniest of hearts” Q Magazine

“One of the country’s most promising new voices” Sunday Times (Culture)

“Kicking up a storm in her own right” NME

“The song writing candour evident has seen Lucy Rose tipped for… solo success” Daily Mirror

“Lucy Rose is absolutely outstanding!” Edith Bowman, Radio 1

“Absolutely beautiful Fearne Cotton, Radio 1

“I was only a matter of time before the second wave of British nu-folk pioneers made it to the U.S, and Lucy Rose, is sure to be among its first breakout stars” Vogue.com

CHOCOLATE ORANGE

RED DANCERS COMETH

PRIVADO

Whelanslive is proud to present a celebration of new Irish music. Tuesday the 3rd of April will see the upstairs venue in Whelans playing host to a series of the best of new music this country has to offer each week. Every Tuesday night will see three hand-picked bands showcase their originality, performance and amazingly fresh songwriting skills.  It is a great opportunity to see the next round of Irelands unsung and unsigned.   Red Dancers Cometh Red Dancers Cometh are a 3 piece rock band from Dublin. They have recently completed recording their 11 track self-titled debut album. Produced by Stephen Farrell and mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound, New York, due for release in 2012. Red Dancers Cometh have received air play on Nova, Phantom, 2fm, DublinCityFm, BBC Radio 1 Northern Ireland, NearFm & LiffeySoundFm.  They recorded a 2fm Hegarty session, first aired on the 17th Oct 2011 Dan Hegarty’s 2012 preview“If you’re one of those people that think that there is too much pleasant sounding music around right now, then take a listen to Red Dancers Cometh. Alt Rock is a fairly broad description, but if you were to narrow it down, RDC sit somewhere between Jane’s Addiction, Nine Inch Nails and Placebo. Expect to hear their debut album in mid 2012.”    Red Dancers Cometh also featured on Cormac Battle’s ‘Border Crossing’ spot on BBC Radio 1’s ‘Introducing’ show. Live studio sessions on Radio Nova’s Locals Only and The Near FM Sessions   Privado are a 4 piece rock band from east coast of Ireland – its rock music, but not as you know it. Formed over 3 years ago from the ashes of other bands, guitarist Daire along with bassist Derek and drummer Niam, did some heavy auditioning before teaming up with the talented Amy to give Privado a sound that could not be heard elsewhere. With varied influences and backgrounds from technology to musical theatre, Privado pump out a solid rock sound mixed with both acoustic and synth elements. Following on from successful gigs in venues from Dublin’s “Button Factory” to smashing headlines in Dundalk’s “The Spirit Store”, Privado currently are recording promos which will be available soon for free download & press use – Privado have set about bringing the world their unique sound which appeals to a wide and varied audience…The future is bright – the future is Privado…     Chocolate Orange In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth but the earth was without form and void. Several millions years later all this changed when the meeting of Terry, Paddy, Keds and Deece equated to a ‘Big Bang’ of musical minds. The earth rejoiced…. CHOCOLATE ORANGE, a Dublin based four-piece with a sound that has drawn from many influences: blues, country, rock and indie are all mingled together in a diverse set, all the while founded on the bedrock of singer Terry and his powerful vocal style. The stomping blues driven ‘Dementia’, beer-swilling story-time of ‘Walk of Shame’ and the warmth of ‘The Wanderer’ with its country licks and hootenanny finish, all endear themselves with their individuality and sit comfortable in a diverse set at the same time. Since their first gig in Whelans January 2010, this band have played their uplifting set to the likes of The Village, The Sugar Club, Crawdaddy and Sweeney’s and festivals such asVantastival and No Place Like Dome. In a world of skulking teenagers hiding behind their quiffs and looking generally disinterested, Chocolate Orange chuckle, banter and slap the spoilt face of introverted bands just ‘going through the motions’. Cheer up everyone… Chocolate Orange are in town!

SEAMUS FOGARTY

  Whelanslive.com presents……

SEAMUS FOGARTY

Seamus Fogarty hails from the west of Ireland and writes songs about mountains that steal t-shirts, women who look like dinosaurs and various other unfortunate incidents. He came to the attention of Scottish record label Fence Records after supporting James Yorkston (Domino/Fence Records) at a show in Kilkenny. An invitation to the Collective’s annual Home Game festival in Anstruther, Fife, soon followed – with Seamus performing in front of about five people at a secret pub show/bar room brawl.  King Creosote was one of those in attendance, and was immediately hooked (nearly left-hooked).  Closer to home he has collaborated with acclaimed Irish video director Myles O’Reilly and performed alongside artists like Adrian Crowley and Lisa O’Neill. This year began with Jim Carroll picking Seamus as one of the 10 acts to keep an eye on for 2012, he has already secured slots at the Camden Crawl in London and The Green Man Festival in Wales and will also be supporting James Yorkston on the UK leg of his Moving Up Country tour in May. ‘Singer-songwriter Seamus Fogarty is a no-nonsense operator with a fine handle on strong, melodic, powerful folk, country and blues‘ Jim Carroll, Irish Times ‘Deep listening psychedelic folk, a peaty brew.’

DC TEMPEST

WALKING ON CARS

DJ SET FROM NIAMH FARRELL (HAM SANDWICH)

THE TARGETS are a 3 piece Mod Punk from Cheshire, weaned on Brit Rock and steeped in attitude. This trio’s high energy live show is definitely not to be missed. Formed almost a decade ago, and featuring no line up changes what so ever, this band have got more experience in their little fingers than most of the Top 40.In the last 2 years the act have decided to go “pro” and have extensively toured the UK and will be returning to North America for their 5th time before 2012 is done and dusted.

DC TEMPEST – Hailing from Dublin, Ireland, DC Tempest are an indie-rock band known for their eclectic blend of rock and electronica. The band burst onto the music scene in May 2008 with the release of the Into the Light EP, which was received with critical acclaim by Hotpress Magazine who described the EP as an “impressive statement of intent”. Since then the band have been gaining recognition, releasing two more singles and touring.

WALKING ON CARS – 2012 is shaping up to be a big year for a Dingle-based band whose edgy acoustic rock, classical piano and polished pop sound have earned them major kudos on the national music scene.

Walking on Cars, who are tipped for big things by those in the know, had a very successful year in 2011, selling out a string of live gigs, not to mention their live performances alongside the likes of The Coronas, O Emperor and rock legends Whipping Boy.

The West Kerry five-piece comprises of Patrick Sheehy on vocals and rhythm guitar, Sorcha Durham on piano, Paul Flannery on bass guitar, Evan Hadnett on drums and Tom Kavanagh on lead guitar and backing vocals.

“Our sound is modern pop/rock with very distinctive lead vocals. It’s a big sound with great emphasis on melodies and harmonies. We think our sound is going to be the soundtrack to 2012 so be prepared!”

THE LAZY HABITS

“The best house party your parents never wanted you to have” – The Sun

2012 is finally here and brings with it the long awaited debut album from Lazy Habits, which will be released this Spring, with a lead single and a full UK tour.

Uncompromising, infectious and original, Lazy Habits are ready to take their place amongst the growing stars of the UK Urban Music Scene.

Inspired by New Orleans jazz, soul, hip hop, Big Bands of the 50’s and soaked in British Culture their eclectic sound packs a lasting and unforgettable punch, with the band describing themselves as “Beats, Rhymes and Brass of the highest calibre”

Originally the brainchild of one MC, the Hackney based outfit now stand as a full seven piece band, whose onstage energy is a colossal live experience that will keep you buzzing long after you’ve left the venue.

Having notched up shows at Shepherd’s Bush Empire, The Roundhouse, KOKO and Sold Out The Jazz Cafe, hitting venues up and down the UK, supporting the likes of Mos Def, Soulwax, The Specials, Bonobo, Chali 2Na (Jurassic5) and Beardyman, Lazy Habits have won hearts and blown minds, proving they can take on any stage.

They’ve smashed Glastonbury with their live performances, hosted and DJ’d on “The Other” and “Jazz World” stages, ticking off slots at Bestival, Lovebox, Green Man, The Big Chill, Soundwave, Secret Garden Party and Edinburgh Festival along the way, to mention just a few.

Their debut self-released EP ‘On the Wagon’ put the Habits on the radar of Taste Maker Huw Stephens, and blew up on the underground scene, selling out on pre-orders alone. Their most recent single ‘Starting Fires’ caused controversy as it was scheduled for release the week of the London riots and was consequently pulled from radio play lists across the board.

The band had an enormous reaction to the track with remixes being picked up by Hatcha’s label & included on the Kiss FM Dubstep compilation.

Championed by Eliza Doolittle, Paloma Faith, The Noisettes and a whole host of BBC radio DJ’s, including Huw, this lot will defy you not to be on your playlist in 2012.

ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO & THE SENSITIVE BOYS

Old Flat Top presents

ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO & THE SENSITIVE BOYS

+ THE MIGHTY STEF Escovedo began performing in the first-wave punk rock group The Nuns, with Jennifer Miro, and Jeff Olener, in San Francisco, California. After Escovedo’s departure, The Nuns recorded an album on Posh Boy Records, but had little commercial success.   In the 1980s Escovedo moved to Austin, Texas, where he adapted a roots rock/alternative country style in the bands Rank and File (with Chip and Tony Kinman) and the True Believers (with his brother Javier and Jon Dee Graham). However, it was with the release of his first solo albums, Gravity in 1992 and Thirteen Years in 1994, that he found his true voice. Although he has yet to crossover to a large mainstream audience, Escovedo has a huge underground following, and many popular artists cite him as a strong influence.   In 1998 No Depression magazine named him Artist of the Decade. Alejandro was also involved in a side project that represents his hard rocking tastes. Buick MacKane released an album in 1997 The Pawn Shop Years, hearkening back to his musical roots from the 1970s.   In 1999, Escovedo contributed to the tribute album to Moby Grape’s co-founder, Skip Spence, who was critically ill with cancer. The album was intended to raise funds to address Spence’s medical bills. The album was titled, More Oar: A Tribute to the Skip Spence Album. The title refers to the title of Spence’s only solo album, Oar (Columbia, 1969). On More Oar, Escovedo contributes his version of Spence’s “Diana”. Critic Rob Brunner commented, “The best contributions come from artists who realize that Spence’s work is as much about atmosphere as words and chords. …Alejandro Escovedo offers an appropriately bleary ‘Diana’, Spence’s darkest song.” (Birdman, 1999), was produced by Bill Bentley, a Warner Bros. Records executive and Austin-referenced music producer.   In 2003, after having lived with Hepatitis-C for many years, Escovedo fell critically ill. In his long road to recovery, he faced increasing medical bills. Without medical insurance, Escovedo could not pay his substantial medical bills. Friends and admirers around the country organized benefit shows to help the songwriter. This effort grew into the album Por Vida: A Tribute to the Songs of Alejandro Escovedo, a two-disc set whose proceeds benefit the Alejandro Escovedo Medical and Living Expense Fund. Contributing musicians included Steve Earle, Jon Dee Graham, Lucinda Williams, John Cale, Jennifer Warnes, Ian Hunter, The Jayhawks, and Son Volt, as well as family members Pete Escovedo (with niece Sheila E.), Javier Escovedo, and The Dragons (featuring youngest brother, Mario Escovedo).   Also in 2005, Escovedo’s song “Castanets” appeared on the iPod playlist of George W. Bush.   Boxing Mirror came out on May 2, 2006 and included many of the songs he had promoted with The Alejandro Escovedo String Quintet, including Jon Dee Graham. Escovedo went on a short tour with the Quintet, which included a date at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall in early December 2006.   In April, 2008, Escovedo changed managers and began being managed by Jon Landau and Barbara Carr.   Escovedo released, Real Animal, produced by Tony Visconti, on June 24, 2008. All of the songs were co-written with Chuck Prophet.   In 2009, Escovedo was invited to contribute to a tribute album to the late Doug Sahm. Escovedo contributed his version of “Too Little Too Late” to Keep Your Soul: A Tribute to Doug Sahm (Vanguard Records).   In June, 2010, Escovedo released Street Songs of Love, also produced by Visconti but released on a new label, featuring songs that were originally presented during “Sessions On South Congress” at the Continental Club in Austin, Texas with his band, The Sensitive Boys. After starting out writing about nothing in particular, the record “ended up being an album about love, the pursuit of a feeling that is forever elusive, mysterious, and addictive,” said Escovedo.   A New York Times “critic’s choice” review of Street Songs of Love claimed that, “In another, less fragmented pop era, this would be the album of thoughtful but radio-ready love songs to finally get Mr. Escovedo the big national audience he deserves.”   Nationally syndicated radio shows such as Little Steven Van Zandt’s Underground Garage gave prominent attention to Escovedo and his album, continuing to play the song “Silver Cloud” in particular well into the following year.

CRY MONSTER CRY

“THE FALLEN EP RELEASE”

There is no harmony like brotherly harmony, something completely unforgettable in the weave of voices and play of emotions, stamped into the fraternal DNA that stems from a lifetime of shared experiences. You can clearly hear that fraternal magic at work in the songs of brothers Richie and Jamie Martin, better known as Cry Monster Cry, whose lives have revolved around music for as long as they can remember. The last two years have seen them writing their own songs, based on stories they have made up or heard on their travels. Warm folk melodies meet rich, descriptive lyrics, bringing the listener to a far away place. The band has been honing its live shows over the past few months, playing shows like Dublin’s Communion club night, Vantastival Festival and the Guth Gafa film festival. This year has already seen them shortlisted by Hotpress for their “Lift Off” Competition, taking to the stage at The Music Show in Dublin’s RDS and opening for hotly tipped Belfast singer songwriter Gareth Dunlop.

They release their debut EP “The Fallen” on May 25th after two months of writing and recording in a studio in the seaside town of Malahide. Working with producer and musician Keith Lawless (Fiach, Juliet Turner) to achieve the right sound, the two brothers tried to keep the songs as organic as possible, playing the majority of the instruments on the EP themselves.

+ guests   In the run up to the release of his eagerly awaited forthcoming album, Max returns to Whelans with a set of soulful and melodic orginal songs which draw on a fresh mix of 80s synths, moody film-noir and the classic trademark piano.
Originally from the UK, Max has now settled in Dublin.  In 2008 he released his debut album ‘In The Blood’ to widespread critical acclaim, and material from this has been used in film and tv series.  After a break of a couple of years, feeding and raising his young family, Max returns to the live arena in April at Whelans.  2012 will see the release of Max’s as-yet-untitled second album, written and recorded over the last 2 years.

Max is known for his distinctive piano playing and records with other artists.  He has just completed Tom Baxter’s 3rd album, due out later this year.

MATINEE IDLES

Seti the First is a cello based instrumental project spearheaded by Kevin Murphy and Thomas Haugh, Irish musicians long associated with experimental music. Musically, compositions tend to surf the lower end of the string spectrum, with Double-Bass, Viola da Gamba and particularly the Cello featuring strongly. Cellist and multi-instrumentalist Kevin Murphy, was a central creative force in the critically acclaimed, Dublin based band Igloo, in the late 1990s. He has also worked with artists such as Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode), Andrew Phillpott (Depeche Mode and The Broad Bean Band), Gavin Friday, Nine Wassies from Bannie, Adrian Crowley, Valerie Francis and Norah Belle among many others. Thomas Haugh has released two critically acclaimed experimental records under the mantle of Hulk. He has also played with the Plague Monkeys, produced records for artists such as Adrian Crowley and remixed notable artists such as Efterklang.   Flower of there or thereabouts is the title of Seti The First’s debut album, due for release in September of 2011. A couple of tracks have already provided musical backdrops for notable film documentaries in recent times. The opening track ‘Sugar to Sealion’ has featured in Garvan Gallagher’s Hidden Garden which received rave reviews at the 2010 Dublin Fringe Festival, while the closing track ‘Citric Dirt’, provides a searing backdrop to Dearbhla Glyn’s portrayal of the Gaza tunnels in Ag Filleadh ar Gaza.

BOUTS

AT LAST AN ATLAS

Dublin’s Autumn Owls are preparing to head over to the US at the end of April to record their debut long-player with ace producer Brian Deck (Califone, Modest Mouse). They’re playing one last gig in Dublin before they leave in hopes of making enough money to eat at least one meal a day. This isn’t their first time in the US and they know from experience playing SXSW and CMJ that American fare is concocted from an expensive pink paste that they mold and form into a semblance of a meal. Costly!
If you haven’t seen Autumn Owls in action previously you should make a point to come out. The three-piece indie rock band has made a name for themselves by deconstructing folk/Americana music and injecting it with just a touch of post-rock. They will be playing tracks from their upcoming album and would love to get one last round of feedback from friends and fans before immortalizing the songs in wax. AERTV will be on hand filming the set, so please come make some noise.

HONNINGBARNA

Whelanslive.com presents

HONNINGBARNA

+ BOUTS

“Well i’m a man that has seen some punk rock bands in his time and some rock and roll bands in his time, and let me tell you: One of the finest I’ve seen in many, many years is Honningbarna.” – Vic Galloway, BBC Radio Scotland

“Easily our favourite band at Eurosonic 2012. Fast, furious and fiery Norwegian punk rock from a bunch of wild-eyed yahoos who had all the right moves and sterling tunes too. Few will forget their demonic frontman in his blue jumper wielding a cello like a machine-gun in a hurry.” –  Jim Carroll, The Irish Times

“I knew very little about these Norwegian kids before I walked into Vera to catch them apart from three different people recommending them in a week. I was blown away. A bunch of brats playing political punk-rock in their native Norwegian language who all looked 16 yet played like they’ve been doing it since they were born.” – Nialler9 (Eurosonic review)

“These Norwegians have an expertly honed coil/release thing going through the songs and even the introduction of a cello into the singers hands doesn’t stop him almost destroying it when the song inevitably hits the most rock of moments. Our eyes were glued to every second.”State.ie

“Honningbarna are probably among the best acts to see in the flesh, as their youthful exuberance rarely leaves their shows lacking any punch or  vigour.” – Luke Slater, Drowned In Sound

HONNINGBARNA – THE REVOLUTION WILL BE CELLO-VISED

Cello & Hammond organ would make terrible weapons in a revolution but they may just provide it’s visceral & surreal soundtrack if Norway’s Honningbarna have their way. Six musical firebrands driven by punk rock fury, most still under twenty years of age, have got all of Europe salivating at their high intensity and all-consuming live shows. Having taken Eurosonic by storm and captured the imagination of every critic who crossed their path, Honningbarna (Honey children) are now set to take on the rest of Europe as they set out to export their ferocious musical insurrection across the continent.
