Whelan’s Newest Music
TUESDAYS | 3 BANDS | €5
WhelansLive is proud to present a celebration of new Irish music. Every Tuesday will see the upstairs venue play host to a series of the best of new music this country has to offer. Three hand-picked bands showcase their originality, performance and amazingly fresh songwriting skills. It is a great opportunity to see the next round of Ireland’s unsung and unsigned.
Other Creatures are a new Dublin band consisting of three members. They formed a year ago and started playing venues such as upstairs in Whelan’s and the Mercantile, they have recieved some airplay on radio shows such as the John Barker hosted 98fm show Totally Irish.
They are obsessed with the music of the Pixies, Pavement, Elliott Smith among many others!
“Castlestreet” a young band from Armagh, Northern Ireland is writing original songs with quirky lyrics and melodic tunes that take the audience into the groove. The band formed in 2012 with the idea of creating modern folk inspired music that would have a real swing to it and fit contemporary music structures.
The 5-piece band gets going with Johno Whittington, a competent drummer, setting the harmony and swing of the band with his rhythm driven guitar playing. Maxl Walmsley Pledl with a strong background in Irish Traditional music then puts a bounce into his banjo playing to add that feel good factor. Weston Clendinning uses his physical energetic presence and soulful voice with poetic lyrics to take the listener on a journey of unrequited love and bad dancers among other things. While this all sounds good and the fans love it, there is something missing. So next add a little bass from Nathan Cassidy, and get those people grooving to the beat and finally pull it all together with the sustaining, harmonic syncopated sounds of Leah-Ann Walmsley Pledl on keyboard.
The band have to-date played pubs, hotels and outdoor venues. A recent appearance at the Balmoral Show May 2013 was well received and was previewed on Downtown Radio with a demo broadcast, live appearance and interview. While the sound of the band has been compared to that of Mumford and Sons, Castlestreet draws strongly on the Irish Traditional vibe.
‘Drawing from a wide variety of musical influences, She Speaks blends each members contribution into a whirlpool of passionate and honest song writing. In turn, seducing the audience with their emotionally resonate performance.
Since the coming together of the band in February 2010, She Speaks have played numerous venues around Dublin and Kildare, including; Whelan’s, The Village, The Grand Social, The Phoenix and The Late Lounge, among other events.
The band recorded ‘Park Song’. which appeared on a compilation cd, put together by the culture factory. This launched on 20th August 2011, and featured special guests Luka Bloom and Christy Moore, and ‘Horrified’ for another compilation cd, put together by the Emergenza festival organizers, early 2011. Other recordings include, ‘A night on the town’, which you can find through the bands facebook page.’
