“Effortlessly switching form sultry, hypnotic sounds to more upbeat jazz melodies, Gabrielle Aplin’s second album is exactly what we wanted to hear.” 5/5 – Glamour
Following the positive reception that was greeted to her new album ‘Light Up The Dark’, Gabrielle Aplin can now confirm a major UK and Ireland headline tour that includes a Dublin show in Whelans on February 20th.
Tickets €22 including booking fee go on sale next Friday, October 2nd, at 9am from Ticketmaster.
*This is an over 18s show – I.D will be required.
‘Light Up The Dark’ adds a new chapter to a career that has already delivered 80 million Spotify streams, 90 million YouTube views, 1.5 million sales of single, and #1 chart positions in the UK and Australia over the course of her debut album ‘English Rain’.
‘Light Up The Dark’ has already received extensive Radio 1 support with a playlist for the title track as well as Huw Stephens’ Hottest Record followed by a second playlist for the recent single ‘Sweet Nothing’.
The new album was inspired by Joni Mitchell and the production on Feist’s ‘The Reminder’. “Her voice is just here, right at the front, and everything sits around it perfectly,” says Aplin. “I’ve also become much more comfortable writing songs about other people’s stories as well as my own, much of which is inspired by travelling and everything I’ve seen since my first album.”
Gabrielle’s recent underplay show at London’s Wilton’s Music Hall sold-out in less than 24 hours. The Evening Standard’s review drew comparisons with Florence + The Machine and Feist, and concluded that it was “A mini-triumph; greater ones will come.”

After a brief end of Summer break, Night Howl is back in Whelans on October 10th for a special 3 band show. Joining us on the night are 3 bands we’re huge fans of Loop Culture, Fun With Ropes and KINDS.
Entry on the night is FREE if you comment ‘Guestlist Please’ on the event page HERE and we kick things off at midnight.
::: “Loop Culture are a playfully casual band unconcerned with tying up all the loose ends… The gritty raw materials are moulded with some off-key vocals and slant-edged rhythms to bloom into something decidedly beautiful and pleasing to the ears” – Barry Gruff
::: “It’s relatively early days for Irish-Swedish duo Adam Donnelly and Julija Melander, but their recent batch of tunes demonstrate some damn special electronic pop smarts. There’s a lovely lilt to Melander’s voice on “We Don’t Remember”, while the punchy backing and exuberant, bright colouring make it something quite distinctive” – Jim Carroll
The Devlins have always had the ability to produce compelling, understated musical gems and have earned a reputation as an Irish band with more longevity, creativity and credibility than most.

Irish Indie rock ensemble Penrose described as a band with catchy uplifting songs that have “attitude” and that stick in your head. Mixing the pop sensibilities& harmonies of The Beatles / ELO, the snarling vocals of Marc Bolan and the rhythmic acoustic guitars of The Verve, Penrose are a truly powerful force…live and on record.

Silver-tongued songsmith and true American treasure Kelley Stoltz brings us a new collection of instant classics with just a hint more synthery than 2013’s “Double Exposure”.

Singer Shobsy, guitarist Joe Regan drummer Paul Ridgeway and bassist Noel Perry are all students at BIMM Music College in Dublin. The atmosphere at BIMM encourages collaborations and musical friendships to blossom. Bonding over a shared interest in classic 80’s music and a common desire to write big stadium sized songs the guys decided to work on a music project. This early incarnation lead to the formation of State Lights in May 2014.
Progress was immediate and the band quickly decamped to Granard Co Longford to record their first songs in Joe Regan’s home studio. The first result of these sessions was the ‘Breakout’ EP which articulates tales of young love, rejection and hope underpinned by a classic vocal style wrapped around a big atmospheric sound. The EP quickly gained traction and eventually peaked at No 6 in the Irish iTunes Album Charts. Radio support was immediate with the group being selected as ‘Artist of the week’ on the critically acclaimed ‘Totally Irish’ show on 98fm with significant airplay being received on 2FM and TXFM also.
2015 Kicked off in style with a headlining performance at the BT Young Scientist Exhibition before a crowd of 4000 students at Dublin’s RDS arena. They then headlined the ‘Whelan’s Ones to Watch 2015’ Festival before a storming set at the First Fortnight Festival at the Button Factory. The band ended the month by performing as Special Guests (alongside The Riptide Movement) at the prestigious entertainment.ie awards.
The band received their first UK radio play on March 27th when they were selected to appear as ‘Shock of the New’ on the influential Jo Good show on XFM while their first US play arrived through KROQ 106.7 (LA) who played ‘Breakout’ on March 29th. Further airplay was received on Flux FM in Germany and WBOS 92.9 Boston also. The ‘Passport Approved’ radio show which is syndicated to over 25 major stations globally featured the band alongside Kodaline, Hozier and Gavin James as part of a special feature on Irish acts in May.
During the summer the band performed storming sets at both Indiependence and Castlepalooza festivals.
“Dublin’s State Lights show why Irish music is booming in the current climate. A young band armed with some excellent U2-style riffs and a singer possessing both a stunning voice and a magnetic stage presence” (Dublin Concerts)
The band are currently writing and recording material for an EP release slated for February 2016.Already it is easy to understand why critics view State Lights as one of the best new bands in Ireland.
“State Lights – Dublin band whose debut EP “The Breakout” is full of bracing, assured rock/pop tunes and who already have a sound which is aiming for stadiums and arenas. Frontman Shobsy’s voice is one of their key assets, but the musicianship underpinning the songs is also pretty striking at this early stage. The sound of a potentially very large crowd” – Jim Carroll, The Irish Times

The word “bully” has a negative connotation in 2015, one heavy with menace and violence. A bully is an instigator, an aggressor—someone who can spot your weaknesses and exploit them mercilessly.
