Having established a gruesome forfeiture system to impose discipline, :Hounds: were able to reach an acceptable level of musical understanding in only 5 short years.

With the foundation of their throbbing, riff-laden power in place, bass player Gavin was able to take a 6 month sabbatical to lurk in a canoe. Drummer Brian (hired primarily for his ability to scare bulies) regularly fights man-sized chickens for money, although he has yet to be paid. If bespectacled rage-made-flesh singer/guitarist Allen were an animal, he’d be an animal. Reclusive singer/guitarist Peter is currently recovering in a maximum security old folks home from an addiction to rum and piracy.

:Hounds: released their album “Spacemad” in 2013 and are close to negotiating planning permission on the follow up record.

SPIRIT OF FOLK LAUNCH – ‘WE ARE MADE OF STAR STUFF’

Spirit Of Folk presents

SPIRIT OF FOLK LAUNCH

‘WE ARE MADE OF STAR STUFF’

7pm-late, €10

Almost every element that we are made from was birthed at the heart of a star…

…so come and be part of a very special constellation at Whelan’s on Wexford Street on Saturday 16thAugust for a night of incredible music and inspirational talks, with just a touch of generalised lunacy.

Set across two floors of Whelan’s, our speakers will have a chance to tell us tales of strange new worlds, and dare us to go where no one has gone before:

If you’re in need to a smattering of inspiration, activist, writer, and theatre director Grace Dyas will tell us all about the importance of creativity and the impact it can have on our own lives as well as our communities at large. If you’ve got the creative juices frothing but find yourself struggling to launch a project, artist and sculptor Christian Reeves will talk about ways to override that perfection module in your brain by starting before you’re ready. Charismatic wordweaver Stephen James Smith will talk on the benefits of walking your own path. And if you were ever in any doubt that you were special, astronomer extraordinaire Lee Hurley will talk us through the physics of how we are (actually) made up of star stuff.

Following the talks we’ll be treated to a stellar sampling of some of the best of this year’s Spirit of Folk festival.

The mighty, mischievous, instrument-swapping tour de force that is Bunoscionn will be taking us on a trip to the Trad side of the Moon (yes, that’s exactly what you think it is). Limerick boys Leading Armies promise six part harmonies and plenty of craic as part of their always entertaining set. Electro-folk duo Carriages, fresh in from a tour of the Wild Atlantic Way, will rub your soul up the right way with their trademark blend of haunting vocals and earthy rhythmic samples. And Sligo-born singer-songwriter Stephen James, he of the smooth voice and curly locks, will demonstrate a lesson in gravitational pull.

This will be an incredible night to remember, and an essential folky fix before Spirit of Folk in September!

Hotpress – One To Watch – “the fresh-faced soul machine possesses the power to hush a room purely with the sound of his voice”Entertainment.ie – “Stand out voice, that falsetto just dazzles. One to watch, for sure”

state.ie – “His voice is absolutely astounding”

ISRAEL NASH

MCD.ie presents

ISRAEL NASH

plus guest

6th September | Tickets on sale Friday 25th July at 9am €12.60 inclusive of booking fee

Israel Nash has now signed to Loose Music and is commencing the next chapter of his career. The forthcoming album Rain Plans was inspired by Israel’s new home outside Austin, deep in Texas hill country. The young songwriter has fully embraced the meandering hills and endless skies of his Texas home, where you can find yourself so isolated that it is not uncommon for your path to be crossed by a tumbleweed or to hear the percussive warning of an agitated rattlesnake. There is an uneasiness that goes alongside the visual thrill of living in the untainted Lone Star hills and Rain Plans is a testament to the overwhelming grandeur of nature and our place in it.

These songs are about finding solace in family and the fear of the future – knowing what you’ll never know and the uncertainty that comes with that knowledge. At times melancholy celebrations and at other times raw guitar rock, Israel’s new surroundings have helped him create a tone only hinted at in his previous work and a songwriting sophistication that comes with great time and effort. Rain Plans is new territory for Israel Nash Gripka, both literally and figuratively, as well as an expression of his finding a strange sort of direction in the fragility of existence.

No.7 – UNCUT Editor’s Top Albums Of 2013 | No.14 – ROLLING STONE DE. Critic’s Poll 2013

No. 20 – UNCUT Top Americana Albums 2013

“A neo-psychedelic monument, the most phenomenal Americana record of the year…” ★★★★½ ROLLING STONE (GERMANY)

“a thing of real beauty” ★★★★ – UNCUT

★★★★ – THE INDEPENDENT

“his third album drips with authenticity and his songs seep into your soul, lingering long after the last notes fad away.” ★★★★½ – THE SUN

“…a landmark record in both a literal and figurative sense. It’s the third of Gripka’s career thus far, but one whose rapturous beauty easily outstrips anything he’s done before. There are striking echoes of Laurel Canyon-era NickDrake and a cosmic dusting of Pink Floyd. …a record that suggests the full flowering of a rare talent” – CLASSIC ROCK

ROYAL WOOD

ROYAL WOOD

The last few years have brought upon many celebrated achievements in Royal Wood’s career. Since being proclaimed the “Songwriter of the Year”, by iTunes in 2008, Wood has continued to evolve and hone his musical craft – maintaining an unmistakable identity while uncovering and reinventing his sound.

Proclaimed a prolific songwriter and one of Canada’s major talents by critics, fans and the industry alike, Wood will release his 5th studio album “The Burning Bright” on March 18th. The album registers a number of firsts for Wood, whose chart-topping 2012 release, the JUNO Award nominated We Were Born To Glory, firmly established him as one of the country’s most accomplished alt-pop singer/songwriters, producers, arrangers and multi-instrumentalists.

Breathtakingly poignant “The Burning Bright”, captures his truest, most confident musical voice even as it chronicles an extraordinary year of tumult, travel and personal discovery. Written in Ireland and Los Angeles, and recorded in both LA and Toronto, the album showcases a deeper and more introspective side of Wood, and finds him collaborating in new ways – continuing to break boundaries as an artist.

His latest single “Forever and Ever” was the #1 added song at HOT AC Radio in Canada and a Top 20 hit on CBC Radio 2. Making its debut in the fall of 2013 the track reached Top 5 on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter Chart and was chosen by the LCBO as the theme song for SHINE [On], their largest annual promotion and marketing campaign.

His music has also been featured in several TV and Film productions, including major television shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice, bringing his sound to a variety of audiences.

Greatly admired, Wood’s records have been released worldwide on Maple Music Recordings/Universal, Rounder Europe and Toy Town Records in the UK, and he has successfully toured in Canada, USA, Germany, France, The Netherlands, Switzerland, UK, Ireland and Italy. Wood has also supported national tours with David Gray, Sarah Harmer and Serena Ryder and has headlined venues across the world – selling out dates along the way.

Debut Album – “DIE YOUNG” //Kerrang (KKKK) Wounds have delivered one of the most intense debut albums of the year. This sounds like your heart bursting. Terrorizer (4/5) This is the soundtrack to the most apocalyptic party known to man, played with the energy of the Stooges, the danger of the Murder Junkies and interlaced with the slick gothic swagger of the Sisters Of Mercy: Wounds are a real force to be reckoned with. Big Cheese (4/5) There is a grievous heart pumping adrenalin around the ten tracks here and ultimately aids Wounds to being so much more than just anger, it’s channelled with a purpose and finesse that makes for captivating listening. Hit The Floor (9/10) It’s safe to say that Wounds are almost certainly better than your band, your friends band and the majority of the other bands that you will undoubtedly claim to be a fan of. Ourzone Magazine (9/10) Hooked even from the first song, Wounds have set the standards high with a belter of an album. Die Young is a fantastic debut full-length and it’ll be a crime if Wounds don’t get recognised for their incredibly admirable talents. Punktastic (4/5) Die Young’ has all the balls you’d ever want from a rising band, and everything here screams hunger and passion. Wounds have a bright future, and despite a few minor flaws, ‘Die Young’ sets them on a fine path. State (4/5) Wounds have finally arrived at their debut album and are raging. At what is unclear but you suspect it’s pretty much anything that we’ve got. Die Young is a record seething with anger and resentment and, if it’s not particularly original, is still an enthralling racket. Powerplay Magazine (9/10) An acute, diligent and earnest debut from a band that may be set to self-destruct, Wounds offer one of the most honest sounds running the hardcore circuit. Planetmosh (9/10) As with their explosive live shows, the resulting album is a testimony to a band hungry and determined to live life to the fullest, with an in-your-face punk’n’roll hardcore sound is honest and refreshing, and references everything from the classic garage sound of The Stooges through to the modern fuck-you attitude of the likes of Cancer Bats.

10:30pm – FREE ENTRY

Dublin Blues Cartel formed a year and half ago, after a long association. They began playing every Monday in the Leeson Lounge, playing mostly a version of New Orleans R’n’B with a classic rock twist, sandwiched with swing, Rock’n’Roll, Soul, Funk, Blues and rap of all eras. Their sets consists of radical reworkings of well known R’n’B standards which segue into lengthy improvisations that are one minute, blues jazz crescendo, the next a funk dervish, one minute a pyschedelic freak out, next a country boogie twist, the next a dark ascension of Wagnerian majesty.

Featuring some the best musicians Ireland has ever produced, Dublin Blue cartel are:

James delaney (James has played with Sharon Shannon, Van Morrison, Paul Brady, Chuck Berry, Andrew Strong)

Pat Farrell: Lead Guitar (The Business, Red Peters). Pat had shared stages with B.B. King, Jeff Healy, John Primer and Carlos Johnson

John Quearney: Bass (Donovan, Heavy Waits, The Business, Left right n Centre,)

Noel Bridgeman: Drums. Noel was a founding member of Skid Row, one of the most important Irish rock bands, whose members included Gary Moore, Phill Lynott and Brush Shields. He has also recorded with Van Morrison, Steve Earle, Sharon Shannon and has played with Mary Black and many other legendary Irish artists.

Mick Pyro is a member of Republic of Loose who have had three top ten albums in Ireland, one reaching number 2. Mick has supported U.2., The Roots, Ian Brown, The Neville Brothers, Guns n Roses, Snow Patrol and the New York Dolls. He has Co- produced a track for Sinead O, Connor and has appeared with her on stage several times. He has recorded with Camp Lo, Styles P (I like Music) and U.2. (Tribute to Ronnie Drew)
