GENTRY MORRIS & SINEAD WHITE

The Dublin five piece have been touring parts of Ireland, Scandinavia and North America over the past 9 months whiles performing at some of Irelands well known festival such as Electric Picnic, Sea Sessions, Valentia Isle Festival and The Spirit of Folk Festival.

The Young Folk’s powerful self-titled ep (which is out now) has the anticipated balance of seamless harmonies, classic folk progression that continues their journey through dynamic soundscapes. With shades of alt-county heroes in evidence, the bands orchestration nods to home grown and North American folk traditions that artfully build melodies that feel as though they have existed for many years.

Dubliner Magazine labelled them as “a unique prospect” “one of the most promising young Irish bands of recent years” (Eamon Carr), not because of their impressive resume, but because of the raw energy and passion they bring to the stage.

The Young Folk were a revelation. part Fleet Foxes, the sterling vocals were the pinnacle of a set bursting with a rousing underbelly that demanded attention – this is a band more than capable of making a big breakthrough.” Bryan O’Hanlon (Stop The Lights)

The Young Folk is not a typical folk band, but instead display an interesting interplay between traditional instruments and modern musicality that has drawn the support of RTE DJ’s Pat Kenny, Cathal Murray and John Creedon, 2FM’S Jenny Huston, Paddy McKenna and Ruth Scott and TV3′s Ireland AM show of which all featured The Young Folk in 2012.–

WhelansLive is proud to present a celebration of new Irish music. Every Tuesday will see the upstairs venue play host to a series of the best of new music this country has to offer. Three hand-picked bands showcase their originality, performance and amazingly fresh songwriting skills. It is a great opportunity to see the next round of Ireland’s unsung and unsigned.

____________

THE BOXING PLOT

The Boxing Plot formed 3 or 4 years ago when a group of friends decided that since they weren’t playing sports or doing homework, they may as well be playing music. After countless hours spent practising, drinking tea and eating nachos, The Boxing Plot emerged ready to take on the world, no longer the pale, innocent boys they once were. Maurice “The Heels” Healy and Oscar Jay L’Esnard hold down the low end, providing the beats and the bass lines respectfully. Oilver “Le Monde” Kelly and The Fox shred some serious axe, while The Fox’s lupine croon adds a little spice to the mix. They now
record and play live when the mood takes, and tweet a lot.

CLIFF MASHETI

Originally hailing from Kenya Cliff Masheti has been performing ever since his teens. His journey began as a former frontman of The Impressionists a Hiphop funk band that won the Blastbeat national battle of the bands competition in 2006 beating over 100 other bands from around the country to claim the coveted prize of a recording contract. This resulted in an EP being recorded in the prestigious ‘Grouse lodge’ studios. That same here he played in Oxygen in the redbull break in tent. As part of the band he represented Ireland in Johannesburg, South Africa He has opened for distinguished acts such as Hypnotic brass ensemble, during a period which the band had a residency in the popular venue The Pavilion in Cork. Among the venues he has played in are The Cork Opera House, The Savoy (Cork), The Half Moon (Cork), Vicar Street (Dublin), Radio City (Dublin) The Button Factory (Dublin), The Tripod (Dublin), The Black Box (Galway) and The National Conference Centre (Johannesburg, South Africa). Following the break up of the band last year he spent the year working on his first solo project ‘The Audition’ which was released in the summer and has already spawned two singles , one with an accompanying video and has received positive feedback for its diverse sound merging different genres such as reggae soul and blues to create a solid debut.

SANDRA COFFEY

Sandra Coffey’s musical interests were sparked as a youngster during long summer days in the Galway countryside. Her and her siblings would listen to the charts and learn the latest dance moves. Sandra believes that this early submergence in music has stood her well.

She released her first single, Mascara Girl, last September. The song gets inside a woman’s thoughts as she gets ready for a date on a summer’s evening. Sandra followed that up with the release of her second single, Baby Leave a Light on for Me in December. She is currently finishing off her album, which she will release early in 2013.

Sandra has been nominated for 3 awards by Music Review Unsigned. She is nominated for Best Female, Best Newcomer and Best Single (Mascara Girl).
Her musical influences come from a variety of sources from listening to the Beach Boys and Michael Jackson to relishing the songs of Joni Mitchell, Ella Fitzgerald, the Carpenters and Amy Winehouse.

Sandra has previously performed on RTÉ’s Seoige Show. As part of her appearance on the show, she got to record in Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin. Her mentor on that occasion was Eurovision winner Paul Harrington who described her as having “a powerful and soulful voice which can effortlessly reaches high notes”.

FEDERATION OF LIGHT
Crafted in the loom of the zeitgeist, the tri-threaded weave of The Federation of Light’s an amalgam of Martin (vox, guitar, keys), Jer (guitars, keys, vox) and, introducing, band-in-a-box Alan (keys, vox).

Cork-Irish by the vagaries of twisted culture, multiversal by inclination, The Federation search for the macro in the micro. An attempted recovery from post Catholic guilt, though deserving of most of those pangs,is attended by a parallel reordering following the loss of national sovereignty, whilst never having been empowered.

The Federation are taut with the stress of all that creative tension and, since the world’s beyond saving, in this dimension at least, we want to hit you in the hips. To move you to rudimentary motion, from there to basic, repeating, physical patterns and from there to the embodiment of emotion in form.

If all that sparks synapses coursing through to the thinking brain, then fair enough -as long as you’re dancin

POD RACER

“tightly-woven, brilliantly antagonistic alt-rock ” – BBC N. Ireland-Across The Line

“A fast paced melee of hammering guitar lines, pounding drum lines and roving, rumbling bass, combining melody with power ” – loud-stuff.com.

Angry, noisy, trashy, punchy and irreverent as they possibly could be, Irish three-piece Podracer take the post-punk sounds of the 80’s, the subpop sounds of the 90’s and different elements of rock, punk and metal, with lyrical subject matter as diverse as prescription drug addiction, Fox News, hoodies and serial killers, to create short, sharp shocks to the system, cutting out the ego-enhancing mtv-friendliness that so many current “rock” bands are weighed down with.

They made their live debut in their home town of Dundalk’s Spirit Store, supporting Whipping Boy and have since shared the stage with, amongst others, Giveamanakick, Fighting With Wire and Lo Lite in Amsterdam, most recently, supporting LaFaro in Auntie Annies at their first Belfast gig of 2012, which received favourable reviews from Across The Line and AU Magazine.

Their debut single “Easy Singles” released July 20th received 1000 YouTube hits in it’s first week and is taken from their forthcoming debut album “Parking Cars & Pumping Gas”. Produced by Stuart “Marty” Martin (Lafaro)and recorded April 02-05 in Bangor SERC, Co. Down, this twelve track album captures the relentless, high-energy sound of the band live perfectly and was released 29th September 2012

Parking Cars & Pumping Gas is available digitally at iTunes and Bandcamp.

Alan Anderson – Vocals/Guitar
Damien Carroll – Bass/Vocals
Colin Berrill – Drums
