INME, LOST ALONE & MOJO FURY

Whelanslive.com presents……

INME

+ LOST ALONE & MOJO FURY InMe are an English alternative rock band based in Brentwood, Essex. To date, the band have released 4 highly successful studio albums spawning a number of Top 40 UK singles and years of touring playing great shows and festivals around the UK, Europe and the world. InMe have toured with the likes of Nickelback, Limp Bizkit, Pendulum, Deftones, Serj Tankian, Staind, Feeder and Biffy Clyro; they have also played main stages and packed tents at respected festivals such as Reading, Sonisphere, Download & Summer Breeze. The InMe of today is a very different animal to that of their 2003 debut album “Overgrown Eden”. Their continued evolution has maintained a fiercely loyal fanbase and challenged them further as musicians with the release of every album. Following on from “White Butterfly” (2005), “Daydream Anonymous” (2007) and “Herald Moth” (2009) the band released “Phoenix – The Best of InMe” in 2010: this celebrated their career so far and featured exclusive tracks that showcased InMe’s progression from their early days, when they had been thrust into the spotlight as teens. Over seven years on from first discovering the band, Kerrang! Magazine witnessed a full tent at Sonisphere Festival as “fans old and new celebrate a band who lionheartedly refuse to die”. Later in 2010 InMe packed out The Relentless Garage in London for 4 album shows to crown a year that proved beyond doubt that they were alive, well and very much wanted by the UK alternative rock scene. Rolling on to 2011, InMe kept quiet until their triumphant return to Sonisphere Festival: this time the tent was bigger, and once again full to capacity, as 5000 people crammed into Bohemia to see them rock as hard as ever. The temptation could have been to head straight out on tour, but the band had been developing their sound for their 5th studio album entitled “The Pride”; they will spend the rest of 2011 perfecting the opening of the next chapter of InMe. Always a band to give their all, they were never likely to return in 2012 with a mere handful of headline shows. True to form, InMe will release “The Pride” in February 2012 with a 34-date tour spanning the entire of the UK and Ireland until the end of March where London’s o2 Academy Islington will host the final show of the tour. “The Pride” will be released via Pledge Music, an innovative approach that puts the artists and their fans in control of the development of the album. Having seen the overwhelming support frontman Dave McPherson received for his solo album in March 2011 via the same route, it was clear to InMe that their fans would want to be involved in how “The Pride” was released. Starting in November, the InMe Pledge Music campaign will offer up a multitude of incentives to fans all pointed towards the ultimate goal of helping InMe reach as many fans as possible as they embark on the second phase of a journey that is far from over.

THE MANHATTAN SYNDROME

THE MANHATTAN SYNDROME

+ special guests NANOBOT

Irish alternative/pop group The Manhattan Syndrome are building momentum with their ‘mesmerizing’ debut EP ‘And We Left It Behind’.

Taking influence from the drive of Arcade Fire, the mood of The National, and their own pop sensibilities; The Manhattan Syndrome have forged a dynamic style of their own. ‘And We Left It Behind’, released last August, accommodates both the band’s driven rhythm and an emphasis on melody led vocals. Sentiments of isolation and alienation surface throughout, backed by a sometimes sparse, sometimes epic sound-scape.

‘And We Left It Behind’ is now available for download @ www.themanhattansyndrome.com

For further details follow The Manhattan Syndrome on Facebook and Twitter.

CollegeNews.com Wasfuersohr blog

“The EP is moving, thought-provoking and a perfect example of the talent that is brewing in Ireland’s underground music scene….Easy to listen to, and even easier to love”

Goldenplec.com

“This combination of musical, lyrical and vocal styles gels to create something special and almost other-worldly.”

“The Manhattan Syndrome are special… And We Left It will leave you stretching for the repeat button as well as a box of tissues”

ThePointofEverything.com

“…probably among the most beautiful songs I’ve heard this year… masterful, organic and mesmerizing… I really hope this is not the last we hear from The Manhattan Syndrome”

NANOBOT are friends from Kells who share a common interest in electro synth music. They started out life as a guitar band, but in recent times the guitars have been almost entirely been replaced with various electronic synths, bleeps and blips. They are hard at work writing and recording their debut album and released a well received E.P called “Sparticles” in March of last year. Having recently played the “Ones to Watch” and “Hard Working Class Heroes” festivals in Dublin, they are an exciting prospect live and not to be missed.

GRAND POCKET ORCHESTRA

GRAND POCKET ORCHESTRA

+ WE ARE LOSERS & GINNELS

Lo fi poppers Grand Pocket Orchestra return to whelans to celebrate the launch of their sophomore album ronald and sylma (released via popical island). Support on the night will come from special guests We are losers and Ginnels.

Popical Island will release Ronald and Sylma, the second album from Grand Pocket Orchestra on February 24th. The band will be playing upstairs in Whelan’s to celebrate the release. What follows is the testimony of Paddy Hanna, of the band: The story of Ronald and Sylma I don’t know if you heard our first album (The Ice Cream) but it was quite messy, heck we wanted it to be messy, we like messy debuts. But we knew for sure that the follow up should be slightly more focused, better produced and all that. So I sat down, pen in hand for a few weeks and attempted to put together a coherent set of songs. This gave Mark Chester (guitarist) time to release his own self-produced album under the name Ginnels, a deadly album of which we were all very proud. This also meant that he had a chance to grow as a producer and, if you wanna be deep, develop as an ideas man. With that in mind, we started recording the album in what used to be an old antique store in Dublin. We also used a lot of dusty old recording equipment acquired from various car boot sales across Europe. Now that was an interesting sentence wasn’t it? Anyhow, recording took a few months due to overlapping commitments. Bronwyn had duties playing bass in We Are Losers, Chester, Bobby and I in No Monster Club, and Chester, Bobby and I in Ginnels, but we got it done. Bronwyn and Bobby were also key players in the albums production, the fairy dust sprinklers if you want. They decorated the tracks with their lovely singing voices and mucked around on some new keyboards acquired in the operation documented in the interesting sentence. I should also give special mention to Tony Higgins and Ruan Van Vliet for helping us out on drums: they were very much the parsley on our stew of album. Ronald and Sylma are the names of Mark Chester’s grandparents.

LAST DAYS OF 1984 + GRAND POCKET ORCHESTRA

Tieranniesaur announce their first headline show of 2012

Currently nominated for the Meteor Choice Music Prize, their self titled debut album has received universal praise since its release in July 2011 and has topped critics’ and readers’ end of year poles alike. Tieranniesaur is now a fearsome live band of seven and the extra hands have helped to secure a growing reputation for exciting live shows with an effervescent party atmosphere.  During 2011 Tieranniesaur played storming sets at Electric Picnic (“Hot damn. The funkiest and most fun set at the Picnic.” – Nialler9, Best 15 Acts at EP), in support of their heroes Tom-Tom Club and a sweaty climax to the Hard Working Class Heroes festival (“There’s no dance party like a Tieranniesaur dance party to bring a night and a weekend to a close.” Jim Carroll, The Irish Times)

Tieranniesaur is unlike anything else on the Dublin indie scene: a genre straddling troupe that’s part old school Disco, part Afro-Pop and part New-Wave, they come on with an irresistible mix of sincerity and Hip-Pop grandstanding, with a true beating heart and emotional resonance at their core. These are songs that celebrate the good times while never losing sight of the ultimately ephemeral nature of all relationships.

The band are part of Dublin DIY music collective Popical Island  who enjoyed a great 2011 with several excellent releases including Land Lovers, Squarehead & Patrick Kelleher, Yeh Deadlies and Big Monster Love.

TALIBAM! and SAM KULIK DISCOVER ATLANTIS

Whelanslive.com presents

TALIBAM! & SAM KULIK DISCOVER ATLANTIS

+ NO SPILL BLOOD (members of Adebisi Shank/Elk/Magic Pockets/Hands Up Who Wants To Die)

Talibam! Goes To Bed with Sam Kulik and Discovers Atlantis is a hyper-reflective and humorous take on current events, ecological disaster, pubescent sexual experience, and corporate/political domination.  It’s an avant-garde buddy movie for the ears: a 21st Century Weimar cabaret of reggae/disco/freejazz/avant-rock/poetry with impassioned soliloquies often transforming into deadpan self-reflective humor.

A 13 year old boy named Franklin is brought to the bottom of the ocean to ‘Atlantis’ by a bohemian ‘jazz fish’ named Stinge. Atlantis is flooded with a toxic oil spill that is leaking beyond control, killing all of the free minded fish of Atlantis. Meanwhile, the politicians of Atlantis use the oil for their own sexual self gratification and show little concern that Atlantis is turning into an ecological disaster of epic proportion. Stinge brings Franklin to Atlantis because Franklin has in his possession a ‘magic pillow’, built by his father and Stinge hopes that Franklin can ‘stuff the hole’ with his pillow and save Atlantis for good. In order for Franklin to comprehend this scenario, Stinge leads Franklin on a tour of Atlantis cultural hotspots;  jazz spots, poetry slams and art centers in order for him to see the scope of devastation that the oil leak is causing Atlantis. Franklin feels compelled to help Stinge and the bohemain fish of Atlantis, and with some other key characters they meet along the way, make a valiant attempt to save Atlantis for good!

DANA COOPER

DANA COOPER

+ Louise Killeen

Dana Cooper (Pronounced Dayna, lest here be any confusion for Irish audiences!).

His prolific endeavors have resulted in 20 albums. The critically acclaimed Miracle Mile on Compass Records was nominated for a Nashville Music Award as “Best Pop Album” and was chosen by Performing Songwriter magazine as one of the top DIY recordings for the year.

Harry Truman Built a Road was named one of the best records of 2002 by The Tennessean and was also chosen as one of the top twelve DIY recordings for that year. Made of Mud released on King Easy Records in 2005 won Cooper the “Best Male Songwriter Award” by Indie Acoustic Project. Working with co-producer/guitarist Thomm Jutz, Cooper recently released The Conjurer which features some of the bluesiest, rawest music of his career. Grammy-award-winning singer/songwriter Kim Carnes, who also co-wrote the opening song, “Enough”,  joins Cooper on vocals.

“This veteran song poet is a self-contained road warrior–a man of many tunes and tunings, and a right hand few guitarists will ever know. His music is vital, and live you see him channel all his energy into the song. The songs are smart, but they come from his heart.” —Frank Goodman

Check out his tune ‘Enough’

Louise Killeen is a singer-songwriter from Shannonbridge, Co Offaly.

Having first caught the public’s eye with her weekly appearances on RTE’s You’re a Star in 2005, Louise quickly gained a reputation as a talented songwriter with something different to offer. The song ‘Star Struck’ captured the hearts of a loyal and admiring public, bringing Louise both national and international success.

Six years later Louise Killeen is back with a brand new album filled with “catchy hooks that get you singing in the shower Simon and Garfunkel style.” (GCN)

Brilliant Tease is a remarkable body of work that is both musically and contextually interesting. If you’re looking for an Irish singer-songwriter that breaks the mould, Louise Killeen is someone you need to listen to.

Winner of two national songwriting competitions and with a truly different and authentic voice, Louise Killeen is a genuine recognisable talent. Brilliant Tease is available to buy from her web-sitewww.louisekilleen.com or on itunes from March 2011.

Past live performances have included New York’s CMJ in 1997 with The Plague Monkeys, Oxegen in 2003 with The Tycho Brahe, Oxegen in 2004 and Electric Picnic in 2007 with Autamata, the Austin City Limits Festival, Texas, again with Autamata, in 2007, and, more recently, Electric Picnic in 2009 with The Natural History Museum. While with The Tycho Brahe, Carol Keogh was nominated Best Female Singer at the 2002 Meteor Awards. The band was also nominated that year in the Best Irish Band category. Keogh/McHugh compositions from the Autamata project have been widely used: The Dublin Gospel Choir recorded a version of ‘Liberty Bell’ from ‘Short Stories’; ‘Postscript’ from ‘My Sanctuary’ was used as the trailer music for Woody Allen’s ‘Matchpoint’; ‘Out of This’, also from ‘My Sanctuary’, featured in the film adaptation of Maeve Binchy’s ‘Tara Road’ (starring Andie McDowell).
Additional co-writes include ‘Shifting Summer Sands’ with Sharon Shannon, which appeared on her ‘Saints and Scoundrels’ album (2010), ‘Step Out’ with The Dudley Corporation from their ‘Year of the Husbands’ album (2008). Keogh also duetted with Jerry Fish on ‘Back to Before’ and ‘Rogue Melody’ from his 2009 album ‘The Beautiful Untrue’. ‘Back to Before’ was a hugely successful radio single and was selected for use in a 2010 TV advertisement for the Spanish supermarket chain, El Corte Ingles.

SANZKRIT

“Named after the sacred Indo-Aryan language of South-East Asia… alternative new-wavers Sanzkrit first came to prominence in February 2006 when they unleashed their critically acclaimed five track EP “Yeah but what if”. It’s dark emotive melodies and expansive soundscapes struck a chord with Ireland’s underground scenesters whilst also garnering the praises of the music media’s elite. From the shimmering ambience of Futila with it’s emotive melody driven verses and anthemic uplifting chorus, to the bright choppy guitars of the hook laden Nocturne, Sanzkrit had sculpted themselves a unique indie-rock sound. Offset by the provocative cocktail of social observationist prose and fraught cryptic imagery offered by singer / lyricist, Dave Marron…. the formula was complete. By the end of the year, Sanzkrit had earned a place on both the Allison Curtis (Today FM) and Irish Times Best of 2006 lists. Stunning live shows and increasingly growing radio airplay meant Sanzkrit were finding themselves touring alongside some big name bands. The busy gigging schedule allowed the band road test new material whilst further familiarising the Irish gig going community with their trademark sound. In January 2007 the four-piece embarked on their own headlining tour of Ireland, selling out every venue bar one on the twelve date stint. Despite their growing popularity the ’krit maintained the artistic sincerity that had won them their first fans. In the spring of 2007, a year after the release of “Yeah but what if” Sanzkrit returned to the studio to start work on new material. They recorded their debut single Talk of the Town in Sun Studios with highly acclaimed producer Gareth Mannix (Republic of Loose/ Director/The Flaws/Delorentos). Soon after recording the “Talk of the Town” single, in spring 2008 Sanzkrit commenced the recording of their debut album. A gigantic Summer tour followed, climaxing with an unforgettable show at Electric Picnic Festival 2008. Upon release of their debut album “After The Wedding” in September 2009, Sanzkrit’s success boomed with rave reviews in the national press, 3 sold out national tours and invites to perform live on 2fm, radio 1, 02 Blueroom and every other station worth talking about. Already well into writting and recording album 2, reports from the studio say that this is just the beginning for the 4 Monaghan lads. First single from second album Midweek Blues OUT NOW FOR FREE DOWNLOAD @ http://sanzkrit.bandcamp.com/ Here are some press clips.. “Destined to be a classic of it’s kind, After the Wedding is arguably the best Irish Rock album since Whipping Boy’s Heartworm……. To say that one of the most anticipated home-grown releases of the year doesn’t disappoint would be something of an understatement, for the Monaghan four-piece have delivered a near masterpiece of the genre with this enthralling debut….” 4/5 stars – Hotpress Magazine “Sanzkrit’s wired and wiley Indie pop is exciting DJs everywhere” ***Gig of the week*** – NME magazine

CHAMPAGNE ANIMAL

http://breakingtunes.com/champagneanimal Just over one year old, the band already has an impressive CV playing at all the major venues in Dublin and beyond including support for Fight Like Apes at Phantom FM’s New Year’s Eve Ball in The Village; performances at Whelans, The Sunday Roast, The Workman’s Club, The Ruby Sessions and Balcony TV. Having been likened to artists such as Florence and the Machine, Adele, Portishead, The Gossip, The White Stripes and even Led Zeppelin, Champagne Animal have come up with their own twist on the indie soul sound in their daring and innovative debut EP. Just like the iconic artists above, Champagne Animal put their own stamp on the music world, giving any established band a run for their money. Siobhan Lynch (lead vocal) and Dave Kennedy (guitar) met through The Dublin Gospel Choir. They discovered their mutual passion for creating music and embarked immediately on the Champagne Animal project, recruiting close friends and avid musicians to fill out the layered sound of the music (Matthew Burney, keys, Ronnie Whelan, bass and Daragh Armstrong, drums).
