Acclaim for “Fields”, the debut album from Junip, released September 2010 on City Slang…
“Invigorating… Krautrock-meets-country soul, which at times sounds not unlike Ian Brown’s mystical dance rock, at others The Beta Band’s pastoral indie shuffle”
Q – 4 stars ****
“Doffing a psych-soul cap to Shuggie Otis by way of Krautrock’s motorik pulse, Junip offer a plangent palette of nylon string guitars and multi-textured keyboards, all of it decorated with Gonzalez’s deadpan, Arthur Russell-like vocals and lyrics that brim with cartographic, woodworking and mountaineering metaphors… It’s been worth the wait”
MOJO – 4 stars ****
“Fields is an ideal title for an album that has a tang of mists and mellow fruitfulness about it… Percussionist Elias Araya and keyboardist Tobias Winterkorn delicately colour in the spaces in and around Gonzalez’s vocals and strumming… This is an album to savour when autumn leaves are falling – and through the rest of the year too”
The Guardian – 4 stars ****
“a magical, mesmerising collection of repetitive East African inspired grooves, rhythmical folk jazz and somnambulant soul, sung in Gonzalez’s familiar yielding tones… Earthy and enigmatic.”
Clash – 7/10
“layering nylon-string guitar; mellow vocals and mellifluous keyboards over a gently insistent rhythmic pulse with the intuitive care and gentleness of a band really listening to one another… all is dreamy here”
The Independent
“Fields reunites Gonzalez with the Gothenburg bandmates of his youth, who back his wistful vocals with fuzzy electric folk as well as the more familiar acoustic accoutrements…”

JUNIP originally formed in Gothenburg, Sweden, ten years ago by José González (guitar, vocals), Elias Araya (drums) and Tobias Winterkorn (organ/moog). Junip have periodically gathered together and recorded when schedules permitted, but this is the first time all the members have focused exclusively on the band. Their sound will be familiar to those who have listened to González’s acclaimed records, but added to the mix on top of his nylon stringed guitar and distinctive voice are organs, analogue synths and drums. The influences are diverse and wide-ranging, from Neu! to Shuggie Otis and John Martyn, while the place to which it takes you is one of pastoral contemplation, hazy summer memories and autumnal grace…
