Named by RTÉ.ie as “one of ten fierce women defining Irish culture”, Dublin-based singer, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Inni-K has received consistent praise for her fresh style of indie-folk since the 2015 release of her acclaimed album ‘The King has Two Horse’s Ears’.
Inni-K’s eagerly-awaited second album, titled ‘The Hare & the Line’, is out March, 2019 followed by tour dates throughout the country including her first Whelan’s main room headliner on 11 April with full band and special guests. ‘The Hare & the Line’ presents a more raw, more affecting collection of songs than Inni-K’s previous work; a collection varied in tone, and showing the maturity of these past years spent engaged in music. The new single ‘Just After’ was released 1st February 2019.
Inni-K’s music draws on her extensive background in folk and traditional Irish music, even as she ventures into new musical territories. Her music combines ethereal vocals with deft musicianship, evocative lyrics (bilingual at times), and a unique approach to song-writing. Having shared stages with various renowned musicians including Malian kora master Toumani Diabaté, drummer Jeff Ballard, Glen Hansard, Liam Ó Maonlaí, Lisa Hannigan, and many more, Inni-K is becoming a well-established presence in Irish music. She recently sold out the Irish Arts Centre, New York, was an Official Showcase performer at Folk Alliance International music conference in Montréal as part of her U.S. and Canada tour dates, and is now set for a busy time ahead touring Ireland, UK and continental Europe.
Inni-K commented on the release:
“This album has emerged from a couple of years of writing and trying songs out. About a year ago it seemed I had an album’s worth of material, but something about it didn’t feel right. Not knowing quite how to proceed, I found myself starting afresh, and with a different desire. I emerged with this collection of songs which came together relatively quickly, and which I’m really happy to now be sharing with the world.
The making of this album was a much less lonely venture than my previous experiences recording music. I had the sense of a team around me – people and musicians I really value and trust – and that has been very important to me, and to the music too.
In the run up to Christmas, my drummer and main collaborator Brian Walsh, sound engineer and producer Alex Borwick, and I, packed two cars full of instruments and equipment, and headed for a centuries-old farmhouse in County Wicklow. There we battened down the hatches and recorded the bones of the songs. As it rained continuously outside (and sometimes inside!), we fed and were grateful for the wood burning stove which proved itself insatiable. Over Christmas and early January we finished recording the album in the Hellfire Studios (in the Dublin mountains) and in the homes of various musicians around Dublin. It was a really fantastic experience borne of old and new relationships in music.
To me there is a more organic quality to these songs – an ease and a looseness perhaps coming from working and playing so much over recent years, both alone and with Brian Walsh, who has been especially involved in the arrangements and the music this time around. Happily, it’s been a very creative and busy winter and I can’t wait to release these songs and to bring them live to audiences over the coming months.”
