Talking about what he sounds like: ‘Someone I know came up with ‘choirboy grunge’ – which is insane and weird, but I kinda like it. When writing though I just like messing around with textures and tones – I put the vocal at the centre and work everything around it. That’s how I make sense of the process. And as long as it’s in tune I’m happy.’
SPY FROM MOSCOW is the moniker of alt-singer songwriter Declan Feenan. After working as a playwright and screenwriter for 5 years he decided to pick up the guitar again and write some songs. And the result is a blend of grunge guitar with heart-breaking lyrics.
After an 8 date UK tour he released his 3 track EP Little War in Autumn 2015. And now returns with his new single Somewhere In Ilfracombe.
SINGLE RELEASE
“Somewhere in Ilfracombe”, is a soft but explosive song about dealing with grief away from home: ‘It’s about someone who experiences loss and imagines themselves in a quiet village off the coast.’ Where’s Ilfracombe, and why?: ‘It’s a place on the north Devon coast. I’ve never been there but I sometimes surf with my friends down the road in Croyde. I’ve always intended to go to Ilfracombe, I just haven’t made it that far’.
Thinking about the release: ‘I’ve been living in London for 10 years but always wanted to play more in Ireland. The music scene has always been so strong back here, especially for singer-songwriters. So I guess it’d be nice to be a part of that, even in a small way. And as the song is about being away from home, coming back to release it feels like a nice thing to do.’“Unique, seductive and utterly addictive.” Music&Manxies
