When it comes to their live shows, Race The Flux . The shows are as energetic and colourful as their music, with a strong passion for the songs exuberating from each member on stage. Race the Flux have had a wealth of experience in the past playing with the bands; God is an Astronaut, The Minutes, The Redneck Manifesto, And So I Watch You From Afar and Tame Impala. “Wouldn’t it be cool if Queens Of The Stone Age collaborated with ASIWYFA? And what if it was produced by Matt Bellamy? That sounds positively beastly, doesn’t it? Could it ever happen? Probably not. But you know what, it doesn’t need to as such a combination was under our noses all along. Galway’s Race The Flux have been making a name for themselves on the live circuit for some time.” – Golden Plec “The Galway lads unassuming stage presence is the perfect foil to the assured sonic assault they’re capable of unleashing. They truly are ones to watch” – The Ticket, The Irish Times “…It just had a completely different and refreshing style to it…Their music is controlled by synth and noise and this is undeniably Race the Flux’s way of bringing something new to a music industry flooded with auto-tuned ballads.” – DublinConcerts.ie “I probably enjoyed this song a little too much. From Galway four-piece Race The Flux comes the video for ‘I Am Animation’, which twists and turns its way through nearly six minutes of rawwwk that’s never anything less than exhilarating” -ThePointOfEverything

New Single – ‘Pack Up Lady’ – New Album – ‘And So It Began’ – RD: 28th March 2013

Click here to listen to Pack Up Lady!

‘I first heard the lads when John Reynolds was recording them and I went wow! That’s some singing, it was very powerful and the lyrics were full of insight and positivity. They are two of the best harmony singers I’ve ever heard, something magical happens when their voices become one, it lifts your heart.’ – Damien Dempsey

Dublin duo Morrissey and Marshall release their debut album, AND SO IT BEGAN this Friday, 28th March 2014.

Darren Morrissey and Greg Marshall first came to our attention in 2013 when their debut single ‘I’ve Got a Plan’ began to gather momentum at Irish radio, securing plays on national radio including RTE Radio 1 and on local stations. The track was a hit for the duo and secured them their debut TV performance on RTE TV on 8th August. To say this is impressive is a massive understatement, as the single was recorded less than six weeks before in London with their new manager and producer, John Reynolds!

The band were introduced to Reynolds by Kevin Godley of Godley and Creme fame and current director of WHOLEWORLDBAND. He saw the band perform and immediately understood that John and his New Air Studio would be a natural fit for the duo. He was right and they began recording their single with Reynolds soon after.

Morrissey & Marshall are gifted at crafting and delivering a great song. The effect of their commitment and performance is immediate and lasting.

‘Morrissey and Marshall are like old time wandering minstrels. I have never ever seen them without a guitar each strapped to their backs, it’s beautiful. They bring a smile with them and play the kind of music that is only born in you. I once saw them play and after they finished I literally ran to them to ask them what that last song was? It sounded like a cross between a young George Harrison and Simon and Garfunkel. They shyly told me it was one of their own…a new one. I demanded that they record it! As soon as possible! A few weeks later and there they were; the same song on national television in front of millions. They really are that good.’ – Jonny Owen (BAFTA Winning Actor and Director of Svengali)

Summer also brought Morrissey and Marshall a newly minted record deal with UK label IRL Limited, new management with industry specialists Spirit Music Management, and an invitation to tour with old friends and collaborators The Magic Numbers. Morrissey & Marshall also supported Damien Dempsey at the Iveagh Gardens in Dublin and headlined two sell out shows in The Workman’s Club. They ended the year with another career highlight; performing with Sinéad O’ Connor at The Royal Festival Hall in London.

And so it began… bringing with it some memorable experiences for the singer-song writing team:

‘2013 was such an enjoyable year for us. It was great to come back home to do our first headline show at The Workman’s Club Dublin which sold out. We also had an amazing time supporting the Magic Numbers on the Irish leg of their tour. We topped the year off by supporting Sinéad O’Connor at The Royal Festival Hall and playing to our biggest audience to date’

Their debut album AND SO IT BEGAN and single ‘Pack Up Lady’ were recorded in London last December. Reynolds brought his considerable skill to project and worked with the duo to capture the unique energy and vocal synergy of their live shows.

‘Pack Up Lady’ is already a firm ‘live’ favourite with their growing fan base at home in Ireland and in the UK where they are now based.

2014 is set to be just as promising for Morrissey & Marshall. They have already completed a UK and Irish tour with Damien Dempsey.

‘We are really looking forward to this year and the release of our debut album. It was a pleasure recording it with the wonderful John Reynolds & we’re so excited for you all to hear it.’

Born and raised in Dublin, Morrissey & Marshall met on stage in Eamonn Dorans venue in Dublin in 2007 and have been playing together ever since. The duo moved to London in 2011 to try their luck at establishing themselves in the music scene there.

Their decision was spontaneous but has resulted in some pretty awesome progression for the band – including writing and gigging with The Magic Numbers; supporting Ocean Colour Scene and Bipolar Empire; playing for the Olympic athletes during the London Games in 2012; and generating a real buzz in the UK capital with their live shows.

(Morrissey & Marshall are)…’The Irish Everly brothers’ – Paul Gallagher

Dubbed the founders of ‘Folk ‘n Roll’; Morrissey & Marshall secured a residency at the famous Boogaloo club in London after playing nearly every open mic night in the city. The venue (‘the sweetest little juke joint in the world’ – GQ Magazine) proved to be a very good match for the duo’s burgeoning sound and they perfected their craft in front of some very discerning punters; some of whom would later become fans, friends and collaborators. One such friend is Damien Todd, who met Morrissey and Marshall at a gig offered to produce the video for ‘I’ve Got A Plan’. Todd is well known for his work on the video for Skyfall with Adele. Click HERE watch the video for ‘I’ve Got A Plan’.

Morrissey & Marshall’s debut album, AND SO IT BEGAN will be released tomorrow 28th March 2014!

TIDES FROM NEBULA

[POLAND]

plus guest

The band Tides From Nebula formed at the beginning of 2008. In one year they wrote 50 minutes of energetic, ambient and, most importantly, emotional instrumental guitar music. This was the foundation of their debut album.

‘Aura’ was released in March 2009 and immediately received positive attention and enthusiasm from critics and audiences alike. It received incredibly warm reviews in the Polish and foreign press. The magazine ‘Przekrój’ in their musical summary of the year included TFN in the top 10 Polish debuts of 2009 and ‘Aura’ in the top 10 Polish albums of 2009. ‘Teraz Rock’ declared TFN the 4th best debut in Poland in 2009.

In no time the band became the most important polish post-rock act and one of the best “export goods” in Poland. They have also established themselves as a great live band.

They confirmed their live performance class by winning the two biggest contests for young bands: Neuro Music (Asymmetry Festival) and Before Party (KnockOut Festival).

So far Tides From Nebula have played with such bands as This Will Destroy You (us), Oceansize (uk), Pure Reason Revolution (uk), Ulver (nor), Shrinebuilder (us) and many others. In September 2009 TfN toured around Poland with Caspian (us) and God Is An Astronaut (irl) making that the biggest post-rock event in Poland. Apart from that TFN also played their first European tour consisting of 10 shows in Germany, Austria, France and Belgium. During the fall of 2010 the band successfully toured Poland and Europe for almost 2 months, played almost 40 shows. The amount of people who attended to the shows suprised even the band.

Tides From Nebula’s new album entitled “Earthshine” will be released on May 9th 2011.The writing of material for ‘Earthshine’ was completed in the first half of 2010. During recording to distance them from everyday life the band took to the remote Polish mountains. This new, inspiring environment proved to be the perfect setting to record, resulting in an album filled with emotional, ambient and energetic soundscapes.

‘Earthshine’ was produced by Zbigniew Preisner, renowned as one of the Worlds foremost composers of music for film and theatre. Zbigniew tracked the band down after hearing them on the radio and offered his experience and expertise. An offer that couldn’t be refused or understated ‘Working with such a great composer brought a new perspective to our compositions, Zbigniew’s invaluable experience has certainly enriched us as musicians’ states Maciej. ‘We put our all in to ‘Earthshine’ our very beings, what we have created makes us very proud’

To promote ‘Earthshine’ Tides From Nebula will tour Europe. The first leg will see the band undertake their own headline shows before they join Riverside on tour as their special guests.

/////////////

“Eternal Movement” is TIDES FROM NEBULA’s 3rd studio album and has been produced by Christer Andre Cederberg, who produced last years ‘Weather Systems’ by Anathema amongst others.

The band locked themselves away in their own studio for six months, focusing 100% on writing new material. The result, an album full of energetic, bright and uplifting tracks inspired by the bands thoughts on existence, consciousness and identity. The album title, ‘Eternal Movement’ is the movement of life, of the World. When we look at things as a microcosm, deep within the atom it’s just energy and therefore movement. All we are, all we see is movement.

The ‘Eternal Movement’ sound is the bands most colourful to date. In their own words: “‘It’s energetic, full of hope and light. It’s has a greater depth of sound as we used several more guitars, different drum kits and far more keyboards than previous albums”.

/////////////

“Tides From Nebula have made a significant step forward since their last album “Earthshine” and are now deservedly one of the hottest bands in their genre” – Metal Hammer (DE) – 6/7

“Eternal Movement sounds amazing” – Onet (PL) – 5/5

“Eternal Movement is a thriumph, combining downtuned heft with some genuinely beautiful melodies and structures” – Rock Sound (UK) – 8/10

“It may not be a name most are familiar with but any fans of post-rock and rising soundscapes need to stop what they are doing and go search for the music of Tides From Nebula.” – Hit The Floor (UK) – 8/10

“Eternal Movement is a collection of eight live killers” – Teraz Rock (PL) – 4/5

“Eternal Movement is an album that you must listen to in its full entirety!” – Metal Norge (NO) – 9/10

“These Poles impress us with their knowledge as well as their sense of beauty and melody” – Metal Chronicles (FR) – 8/10

“Unwrap that CD or vinyl. Spin it. Close your eyes and let Eternal Movement be the soundtrack for your eternal memories… ” – Violent Success (UK) – 7.9/10

“Tides From Nebula have crafted an album full of clever, engaging and deeply melodic songs that are executed with passion and finesse. Definitely give it a spin.” – The Siren Sound (UK)

plus guests

Ladies and Gentlemen!

The DirtDaubers have come down from the mountains and landed squarely in the Mississippi Delta, and his former old time band have decided to plug in(!) to both his blues roots and a regular socket.

Having recently added electric guitar and drums, the Dirt Daubers are finally poised to expand the appeal of their roots based tunes with a whole new Swamp Blues/Rock n Roll kick.

Hailing from Paducah, Kentucky and Nashville, Tennessee, the Dirt Daubers have travelled the world singing loud-and-proud an eclectic mix of Appalachian, ragtime and hot jazz standards and their own original music. From cowboy to bluegrass, Harlem jazz to honky tonk, the Daubers tackle it all with vim, verve and vigour. Acoustic, Rockabilly, Country, Blues, Cowboy, Old-time music, Infernal jangling, yodeling and toot-a-looting.

Colonel JD Wilkes (songwriter and front man for the Legendary Shack Shakers), his wife Jessica, make up the old-time music band THE DIRT DAUBERS!

With their first ever performance having taken place at London’s Raindance Film Festival, (after JD premiered his critically acclaimed southern-music documentary “Seven Signs”), The DIRT DAUBERS have proven themselves to be multi-media moguls. Add to that the tag of “radio darlings”, since the band has graced the stages of such fine programs as the Red Barn Radio Show, The Blue Plate Special and Music City Roots, broadcast over Nashville’s legendary WSM-AM, “The Air Castle of the South!”

Beyond that, the DIRT DAUBERS have gained the encouragement and/or approval of such varied stars as Charlie Louvin, and Jello Biafra!

Tig Linn is a group of seven Irish and Nigerian musicians in Dublin, writing original songs in Yoruba and English, occasionally drawing from the Irish and Nigerian traditions. Our modest ambition is to change the world, one song at a time.

It was partly our interest in social justice that prompted Mavis Staples to choose us as her support act in the National Concert Hall, in 2012, the year we won the Walton’s Gospel Choir and Band competition. In 2013 we won the RTE John Murray Show competition and played at Electric Picnic, Body and Soul and Castlepalooza, amongst others.

An occasional unique feature of our set is an Afro-Céilí. We think our new EP, with its hand sewn case is so sexy we’re actually giving away a free condom with each cd.

Upcoming highlights for Tig Linn in 2014 include Africa Day at Farmleigh House and playing support to Hugh Masekele at the National Concert Hall in October.

THE DEAD HEAVYS

DARLING have announced their biggest headline show to date at Whelans on Friday 23rd of May. Tickets €11 on sale now from Ticketmaster outlets and www.ticketmaster.ie.

The band are due to release of the second track from their debut self-titled EP. “Sail Away”, according to lead singer Gary Harding, “addresses a bigger theme”. In the few months since making their debut, Darling have been featured by MTV’s new music site MTViggy.com and been named on Today FM’s 14 for 2014 ones to watch list. The blogosphere have been taking note too. Influential NY based Nylon Mag, Earmilk, Pigeons & Planes, Nialler9, The Thin Air, Alfitude, Harmless Noise and more have been singing the praises of the duo’s musical talents.

Darling formed in 2013, after their previous band had fallen apart, Gary Harding and James McGuire, sat down in a cafe and scribbled down everything they wanted to achieve and everything they wanted to avoid in a new band. The next 12 months was spent working out of the spare room in Gary’s parent’s house, teaching each other the merits of songwriting and studying the greats.

Renowned pop producer Stephen Lipson heard a snippet of one of their demos somewhere or another. Stephen knows his hits. Many of the foremost pioneering names in popular music have entrusted their sound to Stephen, among them, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones, Ultravox and Pet Shop Boys. Within a few weeks the boys where holed up in Steve’s West London studio sprinkling magic on some demos. These session more than anything let them know they were on the right path. Under Steve’s expert tutelage their songs took life and a blueprint was laid down.

The band recently supported White Lies, playing to a sold out crowd in the Ambassador Theatre to celebrate St.Patricks Day. See Darling in Whelan’s on Friday 23rd of May. Tickets on sale now!

‘One of the 5 Best Things we Saw at SXSW … impossible not to be charmed…” – SPIN

Rolling Stone Magazine “Must See Act” at SXSW – in Austin, Texas 2013.

Tickets are priced at €13 including booking fee and go on sale this Wednesday the 26th of March at 9am from Ticketmaster.

KID FACE, is a wildly original album that stands out as a definitive statement, thus far, from an uncommonly insightful and fearlessly honest young singer songwriter. Produced by John Vanderslice, (The Mountain Goats & Spoon) – Crain has delivered an instantly accessible gem – enabling her to explore the full range of her achingly vulnerable voice, with lyric and song – in which she is the narrator throughout.

The album’s title is a nickname she closely identifies with, as she is regularly mistaken for a 16 year old and treated accordingly. ‘It gives me a great insight into people’s character’ Crain says, ‘and plenty of material as a songwriter’.

The UK release includes a bonus EP, and the song ‘For The Miner’, taken from the album, is available to download and stream here: www.samanthacrain.com

Although initially inspired by the sounds of her father’s record collection, including Bob Dylan and Neil Young, an adolescent Crain took even greater solace in the music of her home state, from the Americana of Woody Guthrie to the sonic experiments of the Flaming Lips.

Based in Shawnee, Oklahoma, and of Choctaw heritage Samantha has been building a following in the US and beyond over the last couple of years, including Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit who took her out on tour last year and have been long time supporters of her music.

“For us, she is a role model and an inspiration. She is an amazing songwriter and a powerful live artist, full of energy and a great sense of humour. And what a voice!” – Klara and Johanna Söderberg (First Aid Kit)

NEW VALLEY WOLVES

Hailing from Glasgow, the Amazing Snakeheads – Dale Barclay, William Coombe & Jordan Hutchison – look like they sound. The poise is part bike gang, part all-seasons barfly; all pomade, shades, denim, leather and signet rings. On stage, they are uncompromised, truly a force of nature. Dale appears possessed by music, rock’n’roll channelled through every sinew in his body.

“I genuinely don’t know where the music comes from,” says Dale. “How I play music – live or in the studio – it is what it is and I struggle to know where it comes from. There’s been a lot of things written about the band, people say we’re angry and things like that – but to me it’s just us. There’s a hell of a lot of joy in the music. It might not be apparent but on a good night, I’m experiencing absolute joy when I play music.”

The Amazing Snakeheads never really formed as such – their conception seemingly more preordained than planned. Dale and William had been mates since childhood; Jordan was Dale’s neighbour who became a close friend. While they each played music, they never really harboured ambitions to play in bands – the prospect of aiming high and missing was almost enough to put the trio off even trying. Dale explains.

In fact, the band’s live shows were such jaw dropping displays of the redemptive powers of rock’n’roll, one may well have walked away wondering how they’d ever get that energy across in the studio.

Incredibly, they somehow have. Amphetamine Ballads – the Amazing Snakeheads debut album – is the soundtrack to the dark corners of nightclubs and those dimly lit alleyways off the main drag. The smell of smoke and liquor pervades everything, from opener I’m A Vampire – a narcotic kickstart from that nocturnal world – through first proper single Flatlining, all cyclonic guitar solo and skronking saxophone; past the nape of the neck intimacy of Where Is My Knife (“Forget the rest now I’m your daddy”) and Here It Comes Again’s howling motorik punk rock; and onto Heading for Heartbreak’s 3am soulsearch and the lock in blues of Tiger By The Tail. This is a subterranean record, a record that can show you round the parts of a city that come alive after dark. In fact, the only sun this album has seen is the unforgiving light of the dawn walk home.

“Truly exciting, awe-inspiring music” (5-stars) – SONGLINES

The Old Dance School’s expansive landscapes of ear-bending contemporary folk place them as true innovators of the music. Duelling fiddles, soaring brass crescendos, and irresistible grooves, their live show charts their remarkable journey from ballet school basement jam sessions and cowshed rehearsals, to remote lighthouses, to headline appearances at international festivals.

The Old Dance School takes it’s name from the old Betty Fox School of Ballet in Birmingham, then legendary jam session venue, where the band first formed in 2006. Championed by BBC Radio 2’s Bob Harris, the septet’s provocative songs and cinematic sound has received plaudits throughout the country, from press and audiences alike, including Songlines Top Of The World 2010, and The Scotsman’s Album of the Year.

The seven members of The Old Dance School may seem fresh faced, but don’t let them fool you, the diversity and scale of each one’s musical journey is quite remarkable. From international jazz festivals to European opera tours, film score commissions to classical recitals, green festivals to tattoo conventions, members of The Old Dance School have performed, recorded and toured with artists such as Martha Wainwright, Cerys Matthews, Graham Coxon, Zoe Rahman, Michael McGoldrick, Neil Yates, Jim Perrin, The Destroyers, Kevin Dempsey, and Chris While.

LIVE DATES: Whelans Midnight Show, Dublin, March 22nd

Number 1, Mullingar, April 4th

Sweeney Mongrel, Dublin on April 10th

Latest: * Storyfold are this week Dermot & Dave’s ‘Homegrown Heroes’ on 98fm and Dublin Concerts blog ‘Band of the Week’*

Following on from 2011’s hit album Rocket Science, Storyfold are back, having spent the last year in the realms of studio-ville perfecting a new sound. The Dublin based band kick off what promises to be a massive 2014 with the release of their brand new EP ‘The Underpass’, with its plethora of pop sensibilities helped no doubt by a pristine production by Ger McDonnell (U2, The Cure, Kasabian). It is engineered by Phil Magee (Kodaline) and marks a progressive mature sound that’s guaranteed to get crowds dancing.

Storyfold formed in late ’09 and released their debut album ‘Rocket Science’ in 2011 – garnering a National radio hit with ‘Delphine Wakes’. After just 8 months of existence the album cracked the Top 10 in the Irish charts! It was described as ‘impressively timeless and effervescent’  (Hotpress) whilst BBC Radio1 said:

“Do you know how I would describe that? I would say that’s Ben Folds Five meets Manic Street Preachers. They’ve definitely got that crossover sound that’s edgy enough to be cool but commercial enough to be radio-friendly. I could see them go the Joy Formidable route…”

Supporting their new release, the band will play a multitude of live dates that will see them play the length and breadth of the country. Storyfold are no newbies when it comes to the live circuit having already played to over 40,000 people in Croke Park and having supported Feeder on tour. On April 11th their first release of the year will be EP ‘The Underpass’.

SOLAS

Whelanslive in association with Liffey Bank Sessions presents

ACCLAIMED IRISH-AMERICAN BAND

SOLAS

plus guests

SOLAS is the quintessential Irish-American band recording and touring in the circuit today. Eighteen years ago, in a manner befitting their name (Gaelic for “light”), Solas burst onto the Irish music scene and instantly became a beacon – an incandescent ensemble that found contemporary relevance in timeless traditions without ever stooping to clichés. Anchored by founding members Seamus Egan (flute, tenor banjo, mandolin, whistles, guitars, bodhrán) and Winifred Horan (violins, vocals), Solas is rounded out by Mick McAuley (accordions, low whistle, concertina, vocals), Eamon McElholm (guitars, keyboards, vocals), and newest member and lead singer, Noriana Kennedy. Through fresh and unexpected arrangements of age-old tunes, compelling and topical originals and covers, and unparalleled musicianship, Solas continues to define the path for the Irish music world and drive the genre forward.

This Internationally acclaimed super-group has not only captured the hearts and ears of Irish music aficionados, but fans all around the globe.  Their fan base includes Béla Fleck and Emmylou Harris.

Their last album, Shamrock City received much praise by many:

“…a richly-textured musical backdrop that could be a first- cousin-once-removed of Springsteen’s The Seeger Sessions.”

Siobhán Long, The Irish Times

“…ranked Solas among  … the most exciting bands anywhere in the world.”

The Irish Echo

of the singers, Shamrock City reveals essential human truths with humor, sympathy, and a measure of righteous anger. While the music is timeless, the rowdy landscape surveyed by Shamrock City resonates deeply in today’s uneasy climate, where immigrants aspiring for a better life often face hostility and exploitation. Solas offers a welcome reminder that the struggle for dignity continues, with a tear, a laugh, and a voice raised in song.

Galway band ‘Amazing Apples’ are launching their brand new single ‘Slipping By’ on March 14th. Over the last few months, they have been in studio working on their new album, to be released later this year. This folk rock band has fast become legendary for their high-energy live performances and extensive original playlist, each song, an instant hit with their growing fan base.

Often described as a new style ‘Waterboys’ meets ‘Mumford and Sons’, the Apples have drawn comparisons to dynamic live bands while blazing their own original trail. All band members are talented songwriters and multi-instrumentalists (incorporating bouzouki, mandolin and fiddle for their live show).

Amazing Apples emerged on the music scene in 2012 with inventive unique covers and an original EP, which reached number 1 in the iTunes downloads charts. They then spent the following year developing their unique sound, writing material and building their invigorating live show. They were also chosen twice as ‘Play Irish’ artist of the month. In 2013 they played on the Salty Dog Stage at Electric Picnic, headlined their first festival at Currafest and played a great set at Helium Festival (alongside The Stunning, Kila and Mick Flannery).

Oki’s Wagon are a Dublin-based band whose distinctive sound is infused with a bluesy folk sensibility but informed by their collective influences and personalities.

An Oki’s Wagon gig offers everything from raucous, foot-stomping numbers to subtle jazzy arrangements and this rich musical tapestry is completed by singer Audrey Gleeson, whose evocative vocal talents have drawn comparisons to Patsy Cline and Linda Ronstadt.

Country, blues, jazz and trad may seem like unlikely musical reference points for a folk band but their sound is more than just the sum of their individual influences. The six-piece combines to produce music that is underpinned by memorable melodies and intelligent compositions but invested with the energy of an impromptu jam.

“A country and folk-tinged six-piece destined for greater things” – The Irish Star

“A steadfast composure that manages to dazzle and impress” – U&I Music Magazine

The due are back on this side of the Atlantic promoting their new album which has been produced by Tim O’Brien. Their first visit here last year was a great nights music and is highly recommended.

This is what others have had to say: “Beautiful rootsy Americana”Time Out “Music that the world needs!”Tim O’Brien “Quite extraordinary”Bob Harris, BBC Radio 2 “Really, really terrific”Mike Harding BBC Radio 2 “Thrilling”The List “A major new talent”Maverick magazine “Outstanding”fRoots magazine “Brilliant”Frank Hennessy, BBC Radio Wales
Cahalen Morrison & Eli West are, simply put, two of the most innovative and subtle roots musicians today. Their music draws from old folk sources, but it sounds vibrantly alive. Cahalen Morrison writes songs that sound like a Cormac McCarthy novel: simple, beautifully crafted, and seemingly formed from raw natural elements. Eli West brings jagged, angular arrangements based in bluegrass and old-time, but refracted through a 21st century lens. Like Ansel Adams’ photography, their music is instantly accessible and built from the simplest materials, but at the same time seems to transcend its base fundamentals. Together, Cahalen and Eli tap the root of the old country and bluegrass duets. As the sparse landscapes of Cahalen’s vocals reflect the warm glow of Eli’s voice, it’s clear that this duo was made to sing together. Cahalen Morrison & Eli West’s new album, Our Lady of the Tall Trees, is a stunning example of the power of great songwriting and musicianship. And we’re not the only ones saying this. They’ve been building buzz first and foremost among the top echelon of roots musicians, with Tim O’Brien, Dirk Powell, and Aoife O’Donovan actively singing their praises and spreading the gospel. Cahalen & Eli can easily back up that kind of expert acclaim, as they show on album standouts like the title track, “Our Lady of the Tall Trees,” or the opener, “Stone to Sand.” Their stripped-back cover of Townes Van Zandt’s “Loretta” has been gathering early praise as well. Cahalen Morrison & Eli West’s music sounds eminently familiar, for they’re drawing from our common love of American roots music, but it also sounds entirely different. Even on the classic, or traditional covers on the album like “Church St. Blues,” or “Poor Cowboy,” they sound totally unlike the many, many roots music bands covering this same hallowed ground. Gone are the twangy accents, gone the overplayed search for the “old, weird America,” and gone the banjo-as-a-prop theatrics. This is music built on the joy of the craft, made by hand by two young masters with love for the traditions, but a bold vision for how the old sounds can fit into new soundscapes.

TELL NO FOXXX

The Shoos busk whenever we get a chance as it gives us an opportunity to live rehearse songs and sell cd’s to people who wouldn’t normally buy music on Itunes etc. Busking away on our favorite corner in Temple Bar on a rare but beautiful summers day in Dublin and somewhere in the crowd that were listening, looking and sipping coffees, cokes and beers were a couple. After about 7 songs we took a quick sun cream break (it was about 23 degrees and I was actually melting but that’s my fault for being originally ginger) and this American lady came up to us and said she liked the stuff, bought a CD and proceeded to tell us that her son was a musician in Nashville. Her husband (also a musician), came over and said hello after a few songs later and said that he diggin our stuff. We started chatting everything music, and it turns out he is the harmonica player for The Blues Brothers. It clicked that this what could be that little missing link for our new single “Hook Line & Sinker”, so we asked him to sit in with us and play it. After 10 seconds we thought Wow, that’s it ! We exchanged digits, kept in contact with Rob, and subsequently learned that Rob’s no sideman in the Blues Brothers but indeed the Main Event, he’s one of the brothers! That would have been Dan Akroyd or Jon Belushi in the film, with a huge worldwide tour and incredibly busy schedule year round. We asked Rob would he be so kind as to play on the track with us, so we sent the track off to the States and to Rob’s engineer where Rob played on it and sent it back to us, We were just blown over by the result, it just wouldn’t have been the same song without it! What a chance meeting and what a great guy to do that for us and for Hook Line & Sinker.

DAN BAIRD & HOMEMADE SIN

Old Flat Top presents:

DAN BAIRD & HOMEMADE SIN

On Stage 9pm – No support

The Georgia Satellites were one of the most ferocious bands of the 80’sand what set them apart from the other 10,000 groups who cranked their amps up to 11 was that their wild riffs and tanked cries came from a band that, from the start, understood it’s place in rock tradition and fought hard to solidify it with each recording.

The story starts in the early 80’s at Hedgen’s, a “country club for the spiritually impoverished and emotionally destitute” , as chief songwriter Baird would later identify it. Bassist Keith Christopher, Drummer Mauro Magellan and Guitarists Rick Richards and Dan Baird were playing on the Atlanta circuit in various bar bands such as the Hellhounds, the Brains and the Woodpeckers. These bands would gradually morph into the original Georgia Satellites.

#1 fan and road manager Kevin Jennings, sold an EP of early Satellites recordings to an independent UK record label, Making Waves and the EP, Keep The Faith, provoked an extraordinary reaction from the UK music press, which, in turn, woke up the previously indifferent stateside music industry. The stand-out track on the EP and most peoples introduction to the band was Keep Your Hands To Yourself which was swiftly culled from the bands eponymous debut major label release on Elektra and became a runaway grammy nominated hit, both LP and single only being kept off the respective #1 slot’s by Bon Jovi’s Slippery When Wet and Living On A Prayer. A second hit single, Battleship Chains, solidified the LP’s platinum success.

Where the Satellites really earned their reputation though, was with their live shows. All those years of three sets a night, paid dividends as their live performances laid waste to audiences across the States and in particular Europe, which took the band to it’s collective heart, a love affair that continues to this day.

Two more Elektra LP’s, Open All Night and the remarkable Salvation And Sin, plus a track, Hippy Hippy Shake, on the Tom Cruise movie soundtrack, Cocktail, followed, but by the early 90’s, all those years of incessant touring had taken their toll and the band split. Dan Baird forged a successful solo career with Rick Rubin’s Def American, scoring major hits with the album Love Songs For The Hearing Impaired and single I Love You Period. A second LP, the critically acclaimed Buffalo Nickel, followed and Dan also developed a career as a highly sought after producer.

Post Satellites Mauro played on both of Dan’s Def American albums before taking time out to raise a family and concentrate on his other interests. Keith had also returned to the fold for the Def American recordings and like Mauro played on both ‘Love Songs For The Hearing Impaired’ and ‘Buffalo Nickel’. After recording ‘Buffalo Nickel’, Keith went on to join Kenny Wayne Sheppard’s band and play on a multitude of sessions, including Ayo’s 2006 double platinum debut Joyful.

In 2001 Dan returned to live performance, with the Sofa Kings, a band that featured hot shot guitarist Ken McMahan. The shows producing the live album, Redneck Savant. Dan also found time to record and tour as part of the alt “supergroup”, The Yayhoos who also featured Keith Christopher and long time Dan sparring partner Terry Anderson. The Yayhoos line up is completed by Eric “Roscoe” Ambel. The foursome have released two albums to date, Fear Not The Obvious in 2002, following it in 2007 with Put The Hammer Down. 2003 saw the release of a compilation of Dan and Georgia Satellites unreleased gems – Out Of Mothballs – and Mauro put out an album with his other band The Crashers – Love School. Dan, Keith, Mauro and Ken hit the road for the first of a sucession of tours which were documented on the 2005 double live set – Feels So Good.

In 2007 the band decided to take some time off to concentrate on writing and to recharge their batteries. During this period, Ken had his first child and decided to spend some time at home. His legacy and importance to the band are stamped all over the live cd and dvd set – Fresh Out Of Georgia – which will stand as a worthy testament to his time with the band.

His replacement is none other than Warner E. Hodges, also guitarist extrodinaire with Nashville legends, Jason And The Scorchers. Warner is probably the only guitarist capable of matching Dan’s intensity chord for chord and proved to be the missing piece in the Homemade Sin jigsaw. Long term friends, Dan had co-produced Warner’s 2007 debut solo album – Centerline.

February 2008, Dan, Warner, Mauro and Keith embarked upon the recording of Homemade Sin’s debut studio album. Recorded in Nashville the fourteen tracks on ‘Dan Baird & Homemade Sin’ represent the first new Dan Baird studio album since ‘Buffalo Nickel’.

The album was released in Europe in May 2008 to rave reviews and was playlisted by BBC Radio 2′s Bob Harris, an American release scheduled for 2009. Live audiences got to hear the new songs for the first time when Homemade Sin, joined the Quireboys on a highly successful package tour of the U.K. and Scandinavia. The band were back in Scandinavia once again in October with one veteran (and by all accounts highly jaded) music journalist giving the band a SIX out of FIVE star review and proclaiming the show to be the best gig he’d seen in over twenty years!

Can you give me an amen?

GRANT LEE PHILLIPS & HOWE GELB

AIKEN promotions presents

GRANT LEE PHILLIPS & HOWE GELB

plus guest

ncredible double-bill of Grant Lee Phillips & Howe Gelb will take place at Whelan’s on Saturday 11th October.

Grant Lee Phillips:

“History and legend have often found their way into my songs” reflects Grant-Lee Phillips. “But sometimes, I don’t have to look quite so far to find inspiration.” Walking in the Green Corn, is the latest album by Grant-Lee Phillips. It’s ten songs are drawn from Phillips’ intensive investigations into his native lineage. Phillips, who is Muskogee (Creek), elliptically explores the intersection of past and present, personal and political.

While the songs delve deeply into the subconscious mystery of his own back-story, they simultaneously reveal the resonance and insight of ancient myth in parallel to contemporary man’s emotions, actions, and errors. Composed in a concentrated burst over the course of a few winter months, Walking in the Green Corn came about almost too quickly to censor—the unfiltered sum of years of rumination and discovery. As the days became shorter, the nocturnal Phillips became more productive. “I’m pretty good in the morning,” he says, a smile emerging, “which for me is about 2pm. I find that in a half-awake state, I can make a little bit of headway. Then I become more conscious as the day goes on…I have to wait until the evening and the rest of the world has quieted down to resume.”What initially began as off-the-cuff home recordings, designed to capture the songs at the moment of conception, soon took on a life of its own. “Initially I figured that, somewhere down the road, I’d get some musicians together in a cathedral-like space and re-record these songs,” Phillips explains. But the disarmingly warm, bioluminescent quality of his simple home recordings had the certain weathered elegance that, in Phillips’ words, “would have driven me mad if I attempted to recreate them in a professional studio environment.” With the exception of violin and vocals by Sara Watkins (formerly of Nickel Creek) and an understated vibraphone part by Alexander Burke, everything on Walking in the Green Corn was performed, sung, and engineered by PhillipsWalking in the Green Corn comes together as an evocative penetration into our own troubled era. And yet, the album’s optimistic title track completes the album on a meditative, redemptive note—implying that the potential for change and betterment is within reach, and that perhaps the best solutions can be found by looking backwards and forward simultaneously.

Howe Gelb:

Last November, Desert-folk iconoclast (SPIN) and Giant Sand visionary Howe Gelb returned with The Coincidentalist, a transfixing collection of songs steeped in the dusty and discerning Americana he first began experimenting with more than 30 years ago. The album was produced and recorded by Gelb largely in his home base of Tucson, the album is somewhere between his 40th and 50th release, but characteristic to Gelb’s quizzical self he doesn’t know exactly; he thinks it’s bad luck to know. Superstitions aside, the record, self produced by Gelb and mixed by John Parish, is his strongest in years and culminates three decades of freewheeling and forward-thinking music making either as Howe Gelb, Giant Sand, its larger incarnation Giant Giant Sand or under the guise of The Band… of Blacky Ranchette, Arizona Amp & Alternator, ‘Sno Angel and OP8.

As for what or who exactly The Coincidentalist is, Gelb explains: “The Coincidentalist is someone who can read the coincidences but who doesn’t try to figure out their meaning. For if one tries to figure out the meaning it will be lost. The coincidences aren’t there to figure out but to point the way.”

The Coincidentalist is a set of songs stitched together like a novel but which stand on their own. Opener “Vortexas” is rife with Gelb’ trademark humor and turn of phrase as he trades verses with Bonnie Prince Billy about his beloved Tucson over sparse Rhodes chords, jazzy upright bass and shuffling drums. As Gelb enters the next phase of his impressive career, The Coincidentalist sees him doing what he does best and offers a perfect opportunity to get reacquainted with him or for first time listeners to experience the wonderful world of Howe Gelb.

Four-part vocal harmonies are the core to their sound and are accompanied by banjo, dobro, mandolin and guitar. Their shows are intimate and captivating while always containing a touch of good old time fun.

Old Hannah have gained significant ground in Ireland over the past two years. They have had two live performances on RTE radio 1 (Arena & Countrywide) along with various radio plays (John Creedon, Niall Toner, John Murray). They were also invited to perform on the RTE Big Music Week Train, the TwoTube Sessions and TG4’s Ceol ar an Imeall. They have made themselves known on the Irish festival and touring circuit performing at the likes of Castlepalooza, Knockanstockan and Sligo Live and have supported and shared the stage with Lisa Hannigan at the Turning Pirate show in Dublin.
