WhelansLive is proud to present a celebration of new Irish music. Every Tuesday will see the upstairs venue play host to a series of the best of new music this country has to offer. Three hand-picked bands showcase their originality, performance and amazingly fresh songwriting skills. It is a great opportunity to see the next round of Ireland’s unsung and unsigned.

_____________________________________________

“KirK” spent 2009/10 with producer James Horwood (Abbey Road) recording in both Dublin & London finalising their debut album “Testing Times”, scheduled for early 2012 release. From which they are releasing the single “Waking In A Dream” (Sept/Oct 2011) that show’s the full range & potential of “KirK”. Both release’s immediately available to Download from 31st October 2011

After twelve months away from the stage Phil is itching to get back where he loves & belongs….on stage performing live. But this time sounding BIGGER…..BETTER…..& BALLSIER than ever before. Lock up your daughters!!!! “KirK” are currently finalising their debut Ireland/UK tour to support the release & will be performing live near you very soon. www.butgroup.com www.youtube.com/user/TheBUTmusicgroup www.myspace.com/thisiskirk From the ashes of “Karrier” comes “KirK”……Dublin’s very own Indie/Rock anthem giants with just the tiniest, distinctive hint of that good old Irish soft country influence. Following sensational public & media acclaim in 2009, founder member/lead singer/songwriter Philip Kirk returns centre stage with a new band that possesses the musical artillery to ultimately pack out stadiums and champion the airwaves both day & night on the way!! Revisiting indie-pop anthems, cut short in their prime, such as “ Back In Your Arms”, “Alchemy”, “Is She The One”, with a more streamlined Rock ‘n Roll sound/approach as shown in “Sometimes”, developing a wealth of new material in a similar vein, plus “Waking In A Dream” & “Only A Fool”, two potential classic AOR tracks!!!!

PAUL MELIA

Paul Melia releases his long awaited debut album Hold Onto The Colours early in 2013. The album title is a direct reference to the colourful world of sound which Paul inhabits. Two major influencing factors through Paul’s musical work and much in evidence on his album are his somewhat aborted classical training, alongside the fact that he is synaesthestic (Synesthesia: a neurologically-based phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway). The album was written, produced, arranged & mixed by Paul himself and is packed with 13 songs each with their own world full of magical, happy, sad, uplifing, colouful, dark and vey original music. It was recorded in various places including Pulse Studios (Dublin), Paul’s own Studio and the Orchestra was recorded with the Malmo Symphonic Orchestra, Sweden. James Marsh agreeing to design the album’s artwork was a great addition. Paul’s influences run a wide gamut from classical, rock, jazz, world music to rock, pop, experimental. Most recently Paul made an impact at the 2010 and 2011 Electric Picnic festivals where he was compared to Paddy McAloon I Trawl The Megahurtz, which is very fitting indeed. In 2010 and 2011 Paul released the singles “Miss You” and “Summer In The Sand” which were met with great reviews from various media, blogs and sites. _______________________

ZERO MODA

Zero Moda have been playing gigs across Galway since 2003 and finally got serious in 2011, recording their debut EP in the Summer of that year. The band draws influence from a wide range of genres – alternative rock & 90’s era grunge to shoegaze & dream pop. While the band arranges for their first release, they are busy gigging the country as well as preparing an additional disc of remixes. Zero Moda has just joined the Grey Federation collective and will feature on their Tribute to Thin Lizzy double-disc CD, due for release in February 2013. Three hand-picked bands showcase their originality, performance and amazingly fresh songwriting skills. It is a great opportunity to see the next round of Ireland’s unsung and unsigned. _____________________________________________

RIVER CITY PUBLIC

The roots of River City Public were formed many moons ago when Ant Weaver and Ian Scott met while travelling Australia. They very quickly formed a songwriting partnership and could regularly be seen busking on the streets of Sydney, playing both original songs and covers. They returned to Ireland and both continued to write and gig separately, before starting to play acoustic gigs as a duo.

River City Public was formed when the pair were joined by Garrett O’Boyle and Aidan O’Reilly, who added new power and energy to the songs. The band played several gigs around Dublin, including Whelans, The Village and The Sugar Club, but due to personal and professional reasons, Ian and Aidan left the band in 2011 and after a short break were replaced by Jason Traynor and Dave Coppinger. The new line up have just finished recording a demo EP (to be released shortly) and are itching to start gigging again, with 2 coming up in December in The Mercantile and Whelan’s. The sound has been described as “accoustic songs slathered with rock’n’roll!” and they are not to be missed live…

ATTIC WALLS

Attic Walls are a 3-piece indie band from Blanchardstown. The 3 members of the band met at school, and during their time together in school, were in a cover band with an ever changing line up, but one that always seemed to be based around 5 or 6 core members, and they really only came together for school talent shows, award nights or anything else that they were offered at the time. A few months after they graduated from secondary school, a friend of theirs asked them to help her out, and play in charity gig that she was organising, knowing that they were all used to playing together, and were happy to take any chance to play together. But by this stage they were all sick of playing covers and so that night, they decided to form an original band, and so begun Attic Walls.

Since then Attic Walls have been building a fan base, gigging all over Dublin and sometimes outside the county, but always adding new material to their set list, and always looking to create new, unique, but mostly interesting music. Each member of the band has a classical background in their own instrument and each member has a slightly different taste in music, so each member can bring something unique to the table when writing music and performing live.

Currently, Attic Walls are in the pre-production stage of their debut EP which is set to be released in February. After which, Attic Walls will be hitting Dublins music scene hard, and hopefully will rack up some of Irelands fesitval gigs during the summer, and with any luck, may even find some media attention.

Keep and eye out for this tight 3-piece, that will undoubtedly be growing fast in Dublins music scene over the next few months. https://www.facebook.com/AtticWalls

PETER TIERNEY

Peter Tierney is a singer-songwriter and an accomplished pianist. His music has been described as popular rock but a classical theme rings throughout his songs. Although classically trained on piano, Peter also found time to self-teach other instruments including guitar and percussion. His influences vary widely from ELO to the Beatles to Chopin. In March 2012, he released his debut EP called “21st Century Man”, and quickly followed up in May of this year with a single entitled “Needing for Love”.

As well as playing Live to promote both EP and single, Peter’s EP had a good run of airplay since its release and mixing has begun on his second EP already. Peter’s Introspective style of writing is complimented with tuneful melodies, painted with guitars, violin, drums, and of course piano. Peter’s song “Needing for Love” has seen him nominated by MRU Awards for Best Single. He has also been nominated for Best Pop/Alternative Award and Best Male Award.

The Boo Box are a high octane, full throttle, funk rock ensemble, forged deep in the mountains and foothills of Co.Wicklow. A hard hitting, jam based, 3 piece with influences ranging from Zeppelin to King Tubby via The Chilli Peppers.

The Boo Box bring an insatiable energy to their live show as well as in studio, something which is quickly becoming their trademark. Following a hectic year of gigs and festival the band are now in the process of writing and recording their first official E.P planned for release early in the new year.

With a whole host of performances lined up before then and their debut album set for release next summer, the year of The Boo Box is upon us.

http://soundcloud.com/the-boo-box _______________________________________ NIGHT BLIND

NightBlind formed in 2011. The aim of the band is to write and play original sounding ROCK music drawing heavy influence from the music of rock bands of the late 80’s, early 90’s and some from today. Then, when we have the rock sorted we throw in bits from other genres such as reggae, ska, metal, blues etc to make it our own.

The band has recently been in the studio recording some songs which are set to appear on an upcoming compilation album release by Esente Music Group. http://esentemusicgroup.com/. The album will be titled “Irish Rock 2013”

We’ve gigged around Dublin and Meath in venues such as The Industry (Mezz), Blitz Sessions (Swords), Sheebeen, The International Bar, Captains’ Live(Blanchardstown), Beggy’s(Navan) etc.

www.facebook.com/NightBlind.Band _____________________________________________ LATE TRAIN

Late Train’s sound is fused by their variety of backgrounds- from Jay’s time in the Californian rock scene, Kev’s experience in Canada, Luca’s hard-rock influences, Bruno’s Brazilian-jazz, to Reo’s funk rock style.

The band steadily focus on shaping their songs, playing gigs both acoustically and as a full band and building a reputation on the Dublin music scene. 2012 is set to see Late Train take hold of the reigns, mics, guitar picks and drumsticks, to rock a venue near you.
