PILLOW QUEENS

plus support GANGLIONS _ Main Venue _ Facebook event Having first come together in the autumn on the basketball courts of a Dublin city park, the four members of Pillow Queens soon realised that making music together would be an equally productive group activity. Cathy plays guitar and sings, Rachel plays drums and sings, Pam and Sarah swap guitar, bass and lead vocal duties. The bands songs quickly found their way into the hearts of new fans in the local underground DIY scene and onto BBC6music playlists, with Steve Lamacq calling them “deceptively infectious, with sharp hooks and sharp nails.” Pillow Queens second EP, State of the State, was released in April 2018 on UK DIY label Specialist Subject to continued critical acclaim, with DIY Mag saying: “vocals overlap and interchange brilliantly, with a positive gang mentality evident from the off, even if they’re belting out lyrics on some pretty difficult subject matter.” The EP release was supported by a full UK and Irish tour, culminating in a sold-out home town show. The band have since opened for Pussy Riot at their debut Irish performance and supported Future Islands in front of a stadium crowd in Dublin. Their summer has been spent playing festivals throughout UK and Ireland. This fall, the band will play Whelan’s, 24th November. Pillow Queens live at Whelans, 24th November – Tickets on sale Friday at 9AM Praise from media: “These four Irish women play loud, scruffy, smart lo-fi tunes, and their gimmick-free, authentic approach is gaining them something money can’t buy – Fans.” Una Mullally, The Irish Times “Pillow Queens write charmingly scruffy and smart tunes, and perform them with vigour. On record, their songs’ lo-fi qualities belie a brilliant catchiness and emotional depth. Live, they’re lovable, unaffected, loud. They are gimmick-free, hardworking and with an authenticity marketers would kill for, and there’s a purity to their breezy modus operandi: write good songs, play them well, have fun, and enjoy the opportunities such endeavours are now bringing.” The Irish Times “If I saw a band like us on stage, I’d be obsessed.” Rachel Lyons, Pillow Queens “Their Punk sound is full of exuberance and promise.” Totally Dublin Magazine. “The band’s live shows are bursting with a rich wave of aggressive energy, perfectly tempered by light and popish vocal harmonies that counterpoint the punk leaning instrumentals and produce a kind of sweet-sounding alternative rock that flows along easily, but has a switchblade concealed in its boots.” Bernard O’Rourke, Golden Plec “My favourite song of the year by a Mile” James Vincent McMorrow on EP track “Favourite” “Pillow Queens could well be your new favourite band” DIY Magazine (4/5) “Indie-Punks Pillow Queens sure know their way around a three-minute pop song… a dizzying clash of big hooks, bigger melodies, and super-smart lyricism.” Louder Than Bombs (8/10) “Every tune is catchy but also impassioned, with just a seasoning of punk fizz and feisty lyrics about relationship tangles and self-worth” The Art Desk
