‘UnderMountains’
Rachel Sermanni’s debut album ‘Under Mountains’ finally gets its release this October. She has
amassed a collection of twelve beautiful songs after two years of near continual touring and writing.
For those of you new to 20-year-old Scottish singer-songwriter Rachel Sermanni, she’s a storyteller with a voice that packs an almighty punch with her earthy folk melodies and dexterous fingerpicking.
Her hometown of Carrbridge with its backdrop of mountains and lochs in the heart of the Highlands is rife with creative potential and combined with Rachel’s traditional folk lineage has had great influence on this collection of songs. And since upping sticks to Glasgow, her songs have also been shaped by new beginnings. “Jazz, folk, indie -all the spheres seem to meld together and there are no boundaries, which creates an incredibly healthy scene,” she says.
Rachel self-released her debut ‘Black Currents’ EP, to critical and peer acclaim at the start of the year.
Elbow front man, and BBC 6 Music presenter, Guy Garvey said ‘Really something special. She’s amazing. Listen to her voice. Quite astonishing’. The EP went straight to No.1 in the Coalition Singles Charts where it stayed for two weeks.
‘Under Mountains’ has been produced by marvel Ian Grimble (Benjamin Francis Leftwich, Manic Street
Preachers), and showcases Rachel’s unique talent through an album which at once conjures up a kaleidoscopic reverie of sights and sounds.
Rachel’s wit and natural affinity with any audience somehow belie her young age and have led to support slots with the likes of Elvis Costello, Ron Sexsmith, Fink, John Grant and Michael Kiwanuka.
The past year has seen Dubliner Ciaran Lenehan earning his stripes on the live circuit, sharing the bill with the likes of Damien Dempsey, Frank Turner and Wallis Bird. Now with skills honed, he’s recorded debut EP It’s Never Too Late, enlisting the assistance of good friends Ste Devine, Kev Behan and Brian Kennedy.
The 3-track EP highlights Lenehan’s obvious penchant for storytelling, which along with his elegant and eloquent songs provides a charming insight into the ideas and personality of one man.
Press
“Ciaran Lenehan’s debut EP ‘It’s Never Too Late’ has been a breath of fresh air” – Goldenplec.ie
“His lack of preciousness about his songs is refreshing, endearing him to the audience even further, oddly named numbers such as “One Journey Left” (about a multi-trip bus ticket that was given to him with one journey left on it) making him and his music very interesting.” BBC – Across the Line
“Ciaran Lenehan is on stage, wearing his Dublin jersey, a combination of the good vibes in the room and his awesome tunes have the audience in the palm of his hand. Floor space is at a premium tonight and even with an up for it crowd, Lenehan does an old trad song a cappella. Apart from Ciaran’s voice all you could hear in the venue is the sound of pints being pulled. Lenehan takes his opportunity to wow the audience and does so in fine fashion. Cementing great vibes in the room, Lenehan gets a fantastic response.” – Vanessa Monaghan, Goldenplec.ie (frank turner support, whelans)
