THE FAT LADY SINGS….again

30TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION SHOW

plus support

Whelan’s Main Venue • Wed 15th November 2023

One of Ireland’s most beloved bands of the 1990s The Fat Lady Sings reform for a one-off live show in Dublin’s Whelan’s, on November 15th, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of their acclaimed second album Johnson.

Original members Nick Kelly, Dermot Lynch and Tim Bradshaw, accompanied by longtime live collaborator Alastair Artingstall and drummer Johnny Boyle, will perform favourites from both Johnson and their debut album Twist.

Founded in Dublin, The Fat Lady Sings quickly established themselves as one of the most distinctive and admired Irish bands of the ealy 1990s. Having relocated to London soon after forming, they released a string of lauded independent singles and built up a huge live following on sides of the Irish Sea before signing to East West/Atlantic with whom they released two acclaimed albums, Twist (1991) and Johnson (1993). Their core line-up was:

Nick Kelly – Vocals, Guitars, Songwriting
Tim Bradshaw – Guitars, Backing Vocals, Piano, Violin, Accordion, Harmonica, Percussion
Dermot Lynch – Bass

(Original drummer Robert Hamilton left the band after Twist to set up the music-based charity Peace Together. In subsequent recordings and tours the band used various session drummers, and were augmented onstage by Alastair Artingstall on keyboards, vocals and guitar.)

The combination of frontman Nick Kelly’s powerful writing and the band’s ability to fuse disparate musical genres into nuggets of pop genius resulted in such memorable singles as Deborah, Dronning Maud Land, Drunkard Logic, Man Scared, World Exploding Touch and the song dubbed by one critic as “the stand-out song of the era”, Arclight.

Following the band’s split in early 1994, each of the members went on to enjoy success in other musical contexts.

Multi-instrumentalist Tim Bradshaw has performed and recorded with many major recording artists, most notably David Grey and John Mayer. Tim and bass player Dermot Lynch joined Peter Stuart’s band Dog’s Eye View to score a US Top 10 hit single with Everything Falls Apart in 1996. In addition to his work on stage and in the studio, Dermot has latterly worked in live production at the highest level with the likes of The 1975, M.I.A., Keane, Moby and Fred Again.

Nick Kelly has released four indpendent solo albums, latterly using the alter ego Alien Envoy, including the Choice Music Prize-nominated Running Dog (2005). In 2015, following the release of the second Alien Envoy album Loads Hot Press Magazine readers voted him Ireland’s #3 Best Songwriter (after Hozier and Damien Rice). In addition to his musical achievements, Nick has also become a multi-award-winning film-maker. In 2011 his short film Shoe was shortlisted for Oscar nomination, and his debut feature film The Drummer And The Keeper (2017) won numerous prizes on the global festival circuit. Most recently he has been writing and performing with fellow-songwriter Sean Millar as Dogs, and for the past two summers has travelled to play at Glastonbury by bicycle as part of his Song Cycle project, which is also the title and subject of his forthcoming documentry flm.

Over the past 30 years The Fat Lady Sings have reformed for one-off live shows on a handful of occasions, notably for a storming set at Electric Picnic in 2012 and in 2019 when they returned to the Feile Festival in Semple Stadium.
