Lulu’s Jazz Club is glad to present ‘THE ITALIAN JAZZ MUSICIANS MONTH’ inviting some of the best italian jazz musicians in Dublin

On Tuesday 16th of April Lulu’s Jazz Club invites from Naples Andrea Abbadia for the

‘COOL JAZZ TRIBUTE’

ANDREA ABBADIA & IRISH TRIO

Andrea Abbadia – Baritone Sax
Chris Guilfoyle – Guitar
Cormac O’Brien – Bass
Dominic Mullan – Drums

Andrea Abbadia’s homage to Cool Jazz is not only a tribute to the great saxophonist, but a revival of cool jazz, which, while making some of the acquisitions of the revolutionary bebop its own, provides a more relaxed version, tin some ways singable, devoid of some harmonic harshness and with less convoluted melodic lines, with not a few references to classical music. The performance favors the tempos and the middle registers and creates atmospheres that are sometimes very rarefied: the rhythm sections weave soft and swinging carpets for the improvisations of the soloists who, in turn, seem to want to “discuss” in a calm way around an interesting topic. While maintaining the typical energy of boppers, the performance does not flaunt the extraordinary technical qualities of the musicians, but is in favor of the construction of singable melodic lines, concealing the signs of fatigue and effort. It is a style that rediscovers the melodic content of jazz, and prefers a more relaxed dimension of rhythms. Most of the pieces are from the repertoire of the Gerry Mulligan quartet, the choice to include the guitar gives the concert that necessary character of modernity, the combination of the sounds of the baritone and the guitar excites the audience, playing this repertoire with Irish musicians is stimulating and productive, and gives the concert the international and liberating character that jazz can give.
The quartet will also enrich their repertoire of the night with some original compositions.

ANDREA ABBADIA BIO:

Andrea Abbadia, composer, multi-instrumentalist and arranger.

He was born in Brescia on 17/12/1985. Graduated laude from the Conservatory of Music in Perugia, he began studying the clarinet at the age of 7 at the Academy of Music in CALVI RISORTA (CE). In his studies he immediately showed great talent and, despite his young age, he was included in the Città di Calvi Risorta band under the guidance of Maestro Luigi Formicola until he became the 1st Clarinet.
Since 2000 he has participated in several band concerts including 1st Clarinet “Città di Vitulazio”,

1st Clarinet “Città di Caserta” and some substitutions with the band concert “Gioia del Colle”. He began working in the VALTUR villages as a saxophonist, also acting as a musical support to the well-known comedian ANGELO PINTUS, until 2009.

In 2010 he began studying the saxophone with Maestro Emilio Silva Bedmar, followed by the study of jazz music and improvisation.
Over the years he has played in various Italian clubs both as a substitute and with his own formations; there are several participations in Blues festival and in the wind section with Maestro Francesco IZZO (TROMBONIST ORCHESTRA RAI) and Maestro Enzo ANOLDO (PIANIST ORCHESTRA RAI, COMPOSER AND ARRANGER OF VARIOUS ITALIAN ARTISTS)

Quote from italian jazz musician Fabrizio Bosso:

“When Andrea told me that he decided to approach the world of jazz after attending a concert by Latin Mood, of which I am the frontman together with Javier Girotto, I felt flattered but also little responsible.

Releasing a record as a leader as a baritone player is unusual and even courageous, considering the few and very illustrious references.

“Maschere” is a well-finished record, with an interesting idea, beautiful compositions and very well written arrangements.

The line-up is solid and it is with great pleasure that I meet my dear friend and talented pianist Lello Petrarca.

I wish Andrea all the best so that he can make all his biggest dreams come true with music….”

After the release of his debut album he placed himself among the best Italian baritone saxophonists, playing in major jazz festivals such as Umbria Jazz, the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Bergamo Jazz, Marigliano in Jazz, Lisciano in Jazz, Think jazz, Bach festival… just to name a few.
