Whelan’s Upstairs • Friday 9th June 2023
The Flavours exploded onto the Cork live music scene on their inception in 2018, with a sound heavily influenced by classic soul, funk and indie rock. From a variety of musical backgrounds, the band developed their own unique sound in Julian’s front room, with cousins Julian Power and Jordan Roche forming the backline on bass and drums respectively, complimenting the decadent guitar playing of Jordan Devlin and the mesmerising vocals of Ella Compton. They have released two studio EPs to date: ‘Send It’ in 2019 and ‘(The) Love Life’ in 2020.
A pandemic enforced break and ultimately the decision to scrap a lot of recorded studio material in late 2020 was a turning point for the band. A sold-out show at Winthrop Avenue in late 2021 marked The Flavours’ return to their exhilarating best, backed up by a headline show at Cyprus Avenue the following month. Further headline slots at the Everyman Palace Theatre and at the Heineken Battle of the Bands in Listowel were followed by a festival debut at Wild Roots Sligo in July 2022. The year was closed out with final headline shows in Cork and Dublin to coincide with the release of their single ‘Race To The Heart’, as well as a run of shows at the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival.
The Flavours kicked off 2023 with their first Single of the year ‘Other Song’ released on January 23rd. They’re currently working on further new material for release in 2023 and lining up a national tour this Summer.
