MATT McGINN & DAMIEN McGEEHAN

Wed 6th Apr 2022

Whelan’s Upstairs

Award winning Co. Down songwriter Matt McGinn and virtuosic fiddler Damien McGeehan take to the stage in this very special musical event from two artists at the peak of their powers.

Matt McGinn is a singer & songwriter from Hilltown in Co. Down. His 5th and latest album release ‘Time Well Spent’ was RTÉ Radio 1’s ‘Album of the Week’ at the beginning of ’22 and features a wealth of incredible musicians like Eliza Carthy MBE and Aoife Scott.

Matt was named ‘one to watch’ in 2020 by Hotpress Magazine, and rightly so. Since then he had 2 singles top The BBC Radio Ulster and RTÉ Radio 1 airplay charts. His album ‘Lessons of War’ was received to much acclaim with the lead track ‘Bubblegum’ ft. Ciara O’Neill promoting BBC 6 Music’s Tom Robinson to ask the question “…now wasn’t that just extraordinary?…”

Since lockdown began in March of 2020, Matt, along with fellow performer Cormac Neeson of The Answer, developed the online platform Cocoons. Now in its 53rd week, it is a gender balanced platform that has seen performances from over 140 established artists all around the word and raised over £12,000 for various charities.

Donegal’s Damien McGeehan is one of the most sought after fiddle players in Ireland. His skills have taken him around the world several times, playing the biggest stages with world class artists.

In 2021 he released the album ‘Kin’ which has been touted by many as the future of Irish fiddle music, inspiring the next generation of traditional musicians. It features some Ireland’s finest musicians and appearances from The Henry Girls and Shauna Mullin, who’s version of Tom Waits’ ’The Briar & the Rose’ featured on the RTÉ recommends Playlist. ‘Kin’ also references jazz, rockabilly and Senegalese kora music making Songlines magazine describe it as “…pushing the envelope of Irish traditional music” and folking.com to label it as “a gem”

Separately these two artists are brilliant…together they are electrifying and unmissable.
