HARPANNO

plus support

Thur 20th Oct 2022

Little Whelan’s

We are: Dale McKay (handpan), Aisling Lyons (harp) and Conor Broderick (piano).

We all come from Irish Traditional Music backgrounds & it is through this beautiful community that we all met. Harpanno falls outside of our typical playing genre. Harpanno brings us such joy as we develop this project which lies outside of our own musical boundaries. Harpanno has been a passion project for all of us since our formation. For us, Harpanno stands out in all our musical careers because it’s different, fresh, exciting and unique.

Where Harpanno began…
Dale Mckay first bought his own handpan in 2017 when studying Irish Music and Dance in the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, Limerick, Ireland. Aisling Lyons (harp) was also a student here at the same time. One day, Aisling heard Dale play the handpan at the University & asked Dale to perform with her at a gig she had in a small cafe in Limerick city called “The Nook”. This was the birthing of Harpanno. “Super Happy” was composed simply because we loved the sound of the harp and handpan together. Dale always described the harp resonating over the handpan as ‘the icing on the cake’. The two sounds of the instruments have a very soothing & relaxing quality. When played together, they create a sound which is deeply calming and tranquil.

Soon after, we asked Conor Broderick (piano) to join. Conor was also studying Irish Music and Dance at the University of Limerick. We both felt that Conor would bring magic to the overall sound, filling out the lower end while also being sensitive to the higher resonating sound of harp and handpan. Conor was the perfect fit. We released our first music video as Harpanno in 2018, “Finding Calm”. It was shot by expert videographer Colm O’Neill at Ormston House, Limerick & was recorded by Alex Borwick.

Since 2017, we have created a 10 track album of newly composed music. We are extremely excited to show you all what we have been up to.
This album has also taken a turn in terms of its artisitic and musical development. The varied percussion section appears on many of our tracks including; shakers, cymbals, djembe, bodhrán, glockenspiel and other various percussion instruments. We spent a week last year on an artistic retreat together as we planned and arranged the music for this album. We have explored various sounds and effects on the harp and piano, where multiple synths and effects are also discovered to give a fresh new sound to our arrangements.

The development of our music explores a new sound while staying true to Harpanno’s original sound – that of which is heard on “Finding Calm” and “Blank Canvas”. An example of our latest musical endeavour can be heard on our most recent single “Blissfully Unaware”. (Shot and edited by our multi-talented friend, Dermot Sheedy at Wanderland Studios, Limerick).
