GLASSHOUSE ENSEMBLE: ANDY WARHOL

Whelan’s Main Venue • Wed 7th February 2024

A very special concert featuring arrangements of works by The Velvet Underground & David Bowie performed by Glasshouse Ensemble with special guest vocalists Adrian Crowley & Ellie O’Neill.

In 1966 Andy Warhol became The Velvet Underground’s manager and the band served as a ‘house band’ at his studio, The Factory. They went on to produce some of the most iconic music of the era, encapsulating a time and a vision which has influenced music from the avant garde to mainstream popular music. We are delighted to present these songs in the surroundings of the exhibition.

Adrian Crowley – vocals, Ellie O’Neill – vocals, Naoise Dack – violin/viola, Mary Barnecutt – cello, Luke Howard – keyboards, Yuzuha O’Halloran – saxophones, Dylan Lynch – percussion

Prolific songwriter Adrian Crowley delves into his panoramic and critically acclaimed 9 album back catalogue, while also presenting nascent music and previews of what is to come. Adrian Crowley is a prolific recording artist, widely acclaimed songwriter, singer, composer and multi instrumentalist. Attempted comparisons with Adrian Crowley’s powerfully emotive, complex and contemplative songs range from Scott Walker to Ivor Cutler, Lou Reed to Nick Cave, but the potency of Crowley’s rich baritone voice and haunting lyrical narratives, amid settings that alternate sweeping sonic majesty with ghostly starkness, is uniquely his own. Crowley has recorded with artists such as Lankum, Brigid Mae Power, Lisa Hannigan, Crash Ensemble and Thomas Bartlett, among others.

Ellie O’Neill is an emerging artist from Co. Meath. Her multifaceted practice includes working as a solo artist, collaborator and soloist, both in Ireland and abroad. Ellie’s primary solo artistic output focuses on song-writing that explores intimacy, love, loss, and queerness. She creates raw, intimate, and rich material which is heightened through a fluid and collaborative relationship with her band members; always placing the emotional detail of the songs at the forefront.
