Soprano saxophonist David Liebman, whose distinguished career includes extended periods with Miles Davis and Elvin Jones, in addition to his own important groups like Quest and Lookout Farm, has taken an active interest in Ireland, and, four years since his last memorable visit, he’s back as the performer, mentor and educator capacities in which he excels. With his darkly intense tone, sinuous lines and masterful control of volatile chromaticism, Liebman has a unique musical vocabulary that is emotive, powerful and direct. He’s also one of the most generous spirits and forthright thinkers in jazz today, an inspirational teacher and a seminal link to the artists, like Miles, who still cast a long shadow in creative music. Whelan’s has been a happy hunting ground for Liebman over the years, and here he’s reunited with Ronan Guilfoyle, the Irish bassist with whom he enjoys a special rapport that stretches back over two decades. It’s the sort of company that requires a drummer who can stir to the pot, with an old school commitment to fast terrain and long form blowing as well as bringing their own expansive sound world to the table. Step up Gerry Hemingway, one of the USA’s most creative percussionists and another musician who has been at the forefront of creative improvisation for over three decades. In addition to this one-off Whelan’s concert, Liebman will give an engaging Lunchtime Talk (12-1pm) on his times with titans of the idiom like Miles and Jones, as well as facilitate three Masterclasses (2-5pm) with aspiring young jazz professionals, which will be open to the public, for a nominal fee, so that audiences can have a sneak peak at the creative process. Both these daytime events will take place in the National Concert Hall. See https://www.nch.ie/Online/Education for further information. A ‘Day With Lieb’ ticket is available to purchase for €25 which includes the Talk, Masterclasses + Concert in Whelans Book Here: http://www.eventbrite.ie/e/dave-liebman-trio-feat-ronan-guilfoyle-and-gerry-hemingway-tickets-19730093240
