“THEY CITE Hank Williams and Kurt Cobain as their inspirations, and they seek to communicate messages of truth and honesty through harmony singing and the craft of songwriting in its simplest, purist, form.” – Kernan Andrews, Galway Advertiser
The Southern Fold was formed by Kilkenny native Emlyn Holden in 2014, recording and performing a number of self penned songs in the alt folk & country/blues vein. After performing around the country at a number of open mics, festivals and support slots as various incarnations throughout 2014 and the early part of the following year, Laura Hand joined as permanent co-lead vocalist in the Autumn of ’15 and the duo settled down to work on a batch of new songs and perform a handful of gigs in the Kilkenny and Dublin areas. With their debut EP, ‘A True Ascension from the Wayward Path’, released on April 28th, 2016, and new members Frieda Freytag
(Fox Owl Crow, Dave Couse) on cello and piano, Joe Maher (The Mariannes) on guitar, and Rob Campbell (Pine the Pilcrow) on cello and bass brought on board to help broaden their sound and introduce more dynamics to the songs, the band have been busy on the gig circuit with gigs in such venues as Whelans, The Workman’s Club and The Grand Social, Dublin; Cleere’s, Brewery Corner and The Watergate Theatre, Kilkenny; The Sky & The Ground, Wexford, Kenny’s of Lahinch, and Monroe’s, Galway.
“With some deft touches in songwriting and arrangements, the Southern Fold are a new prospect on the alt‐folk scene here. Ones to keep an eye on.” – Eirecana
“This is pretty much as good as anything America can come up with, so what the hell? Americana it is, and well worth hearing.” Frank Gutch Jr., No Depression
