Fresh from being nominated for the Meteor Choice Music Prize for the critically acclaimed Ocean of Frequency, Jape is delighted to announce a headline show on March 16th in Whelan’s, Dublin. Tickets will cost €15 + booking fee and will feature support from very special guests.

To coincide with the Choice nomination and the Dublin show announcement, brand new single ‘Scorpio’ will be released on Friday March 9th. Driven by an instantly memorable acoustic guitar, the melodic rhythm is accompanied by Egan’s soft yet rich vocals, creating a song that is both warm and haunting.

As the front man explains – “We took a drive up around the Hellfire Club one day and there were definitely spirits in the air. They came back to our house in the car boot and helped me write this one.”

Scorpio is what Empire of the Sun would sound like if Luke Steele used his creative flair more as opposed to just his aesthetic flamboyance.” – Drowned in Sound

Scorpio is the perfect carefree jam for the fall.” – Some Kind of Awesome

Scorpio meanwhile seems to have some drops of the veritably South American in its gene pool, jiggling panpipes riding the storm of a robust rhythm section, and is quite palatable.” – Dots & Dashes

On their album Ocean of Frequency – the follow up to 2008’s Meteor Choice Music Prize winner Ritual – Jape draw inspiration from the likes of Prefab Sprout, Caribou and the solo albums of BrianEno, to create earworm melodies with the musical innovation of Beck and Steve Mason. Using an inventive mix of live instruments, hardware samplers and sequencers, Jape knit together an eclectic blend of meticulously crafted lyrics and electronic rhythms that flit comfortably across a myriad of genres.

Acclaim for Ocean of Frequency:

Irish album of the yearSunday Times

#7 Irish album of the year. Irish Independent

#1 Irish album of the year. Nialler9

Not many albums reviewed in The Scene get five stars, but then few albums traverse as broad a musical landscape as Ocean of Frequency with such aplomb. The follow-up to the 2009 Choice Music Prize-winning Ritual is destined for similar acclaim, as it’s one of the most intoxicating albums of 2011.

The Star *****

Egan plumbs new musical and lyrical depths in the most subtle of fashions with Ocean of Frequency.”
AU Mag – 8/10

Busy boy Richie Egan is back in the fray with another doozie of a record that is bound to appear on plenty of Best of 2011 lists come December.”
Irish Times – 4 stars ****

Jape continue to mine the musical stratosphere of whatever takes their fancy and do it with so much panache and humour.”
Highbrowse.ie

On this, his fourth Jape album, Egan lets his experimental side loose but never loses sight of the song. The result is a more expansive collection of songs than previous album Ritual. Perfection is a near impossible thing to achieve yet like its creator, Ocean of Frequency’s mixture of sonics and melodies will draw you back in again and again. Another pleasing and progressive chapter in the Richie Egan and Jape discography.”
Nialler9 – Album of the week

Ocean of Frequency is a stellar album. It’s an album which remains loyal to Jape’s core values, striking the perfect balance by firmly holding on tightly to the old, but embracing the new with evident conviction.”
State – 4 stars ****

What a fine piece of work Ocean of Frequency is
Herald AM

While Ocean of Frequency may feel like a departure from their previous material, it opens itself up to repeated listens and reveals that it has retained, and indeed enhanced, the qualities which have madeJape such an interesting band in the first place.
Entertainment.ie – 4.5/5

A twelve track stunner that is a heady mix of jaunty, fizzing electro tunes, bursting at times with a slow-burning, Jamie XX meets Hot Chip bounce, Brian Eno and Prefab Sprout crossed with Caribou, all swirling synths and endless introspection
Limerick Leader

The album is instantly accessible… a charm that truly improves with time. Jape’s back, and he’s brought his A-game.”
University Observer – B+

crystal clear synths and half dreamt acoustic guitars locate us somewhere on the edge of the forest of Paw Tracks and Weird Records…”

20 Jazz Funk Greats

“..euphoric and glitchy harmonies perfectly fitted to late summer nights”

No Fear Of Pop

As LCD Soundsystem has shown us before, emotion and election music can sit very well together. Ocean of Frequency is another excellent example of that.”

Golden Plec

If you’re looking for music that’s emotionally engaging, texturally lush, loaded with detail, adventurous in spirit and melodically rich, then Jape are worthy of your time. They’ve earned it.
