RACHAEL LAVELLE

plus guest _ Main Venue _ Soulful, powerful, yet immensely ornate: coming across a voice like Rachael Lavelle’s leaves one with an immediate impression. At just 22 years of age, this talented Dublin native displays a maturity in song writing that seems to belie her years. With the launch of her debut EP, Superman, Rachael looks set to galvanise her years of careful practice with a collection of songs that’s sure to establish her presence in Dublin’s competitive music scene. Her background as a classically-trained singer and pianist compliments her intimate lyrical approach, allowing her to explore a dynamic range of sounds and emotions, all delivered with the confidence of a true auteur. With a body of work that feels like a delightful cross between London Grammar and Kate Bush, Rachael Lavelle displays that rare ability to marry classical elegance and experimental intelligence. “Ecstasy”, her well-received debut song, which released on Soundcloud at the end of 2014, gained immediate plaudits in the press and made way for spots on Newstalk, an upcoming production with TG4, as well as concerts at venues such as Whelans and last year’s Trinity Ball. “Ecstasy” is a dazzling piece of delicate falsettos and lush string arrangements, and it sets the tone for the EP as a whole, which remains in equal parts refined and expressive throughout. Rachael’s long-standing association with TCD’s Jazz Society is evident here; Superman is layered with intricacy and energy throughout. Based off the strength of her impressive debut release, it doesn’t feel like much of a stretch to say Rachael Lavelle has the potential, both in terms of character and technical ability, to one day be considered a successor to some of the great Irish female vocalists. Indeed, the song writing and delivery on her debut EP evokes the type of poise and insight of Dolores O’ Riordan in her most contemplative moments. September 25th sees her take to the main stage in Whelans with a full band, comprising of violin, cello, drums, djembe, keys and bass for her biggest gig yet. Catching a performance of burdgeoning home grown talent at such an early and significant stage is a rare experience: make sure to fit this opportunity in to your calendar.
