MOULETTES

plus support _ Main Venue _ Facebook eventMoulettes consists almost entirely of multi-instrumentalists who experiment with both electric and acoustic instruments. One of their musical trademarks is the deliberate distortion of acoustic instruments. The band often incorporate orchestral and progressive elements into their music and occasional play with a chamber orchestra, or in larger ensembles which have included Georgina Leach (violin), percussionist Rob Arcari, Laura Hockenhull (vocals), Faye Houston (vocals), Mikey Simmonds (violin), Anisa Arslanagic, Emma Gatrill (harp), Kate Young (violin), Eliza Jaye (violin and guitar) and Marcus Hamblett (guitar, brass).Their main influences include Björk, Kate Bush, Gentle Giant, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Dirty Three, The Beatles and Pink Floyd. ‘PRETERNATURAL’ Released 27/05/2016image1 Brighton based collective Moulettes continue their journey into the alt.pop/rock/folk universe with the release of their most accomplished album to date – ‘PRETERNATURAL.’ In early 2015, lead singer and songwriter Hannah began to contemplate an album about the natural world, after reading an article in the New Scientist. The article detailed how the discovery of a microscopic creature that lives miles underground, without oxygen or light, had redefined the perimeters of life as we know it. “It made me think about how much we still don’t know about the planet we live on… the moving space between what we do know, and what is unknowable.” says Hannah. “The animal kingdom holds such a wealth of beauty, creativity, humour, ingenuity and artistry- we wanted to celebrate it, underline its fragility, to hold up a mirror and compare our own species to others.” The result is ‘Preternatural’, an eclectic but cohesive 11 track collection, which marries the mind-expanding concept with elements of prog, pop, alt-folk and rock. The band’s superb musicianship and is given centre stage on this record, their tightness and synergy a testament to their relentless tour schedule and breathtaking live shows. It’s a beautifully orchestrated piece of work, experimental in parts but still accessible, fusing rich vocal harmonies, persuasive melodies, big riffs, detailed arrangements and sharp song-craft to make a genre defying album that explores the moving gaps between electronic and acoustic; DIY and big production. “We identify with bands who present their own kind of eclecticism,” says Ollie. “From Zappa and Gentle Giant to current bands like Field Music, John Grant, Snarky Puppy, Laura Mvula, My Brightest Diamond, tUnE-yArDs and Tortoise; these were all references for the record.” The front cover best illustrates Moulettes for what it is: An eclectic, progressive hybrid, a bizarre and bombastic monster.
