Remember the good old days, with open fires, pots of tay, pints of porter, and songs, scéalta and sean-nós. Nah? Neither do we. Instead, we’d prefer to spend an evening listening to two of Ireland’s finest contemporary songwriters at their most naked and bare (not literally, ‘cos nobody wants to see that – not even their mammies).

Liam Ó Maonlaí hardly needs an introduction. The Hothouse Flowers frontman has played sell-out concerts all over the world, including Australia, Japan, America, Europe, Scandinavia, Morocco, Mali and India. Not content with fronting one of the most popular Irish rock acts ever, Liam is also a painter, actor and artist, and is renowned for embracing traditional music and singing styles – on a 2006 trip to Mali, he learnt of the close relationship the Irish harp and the African Kora! This legendary performer has been maintaining a low profile recently, so it will be quite a coup to catch his always passionate live performance in the intimate surrounds of Whelan’s.

Glen Hansard, like O Maonlaí’s Hothouse Flowers, cut his musical teeth busking on the streets of Dublin, where a gang of like-minded performers eventually emerged as The Frames, who last year celebrated 20 years as one of Ireland’s most engaging and potent live acts. Hansard, in case you’ve been living under a rock for the last few years, is also one half of the Oscar-winning Swell Season. This Whelan’s gig sees him reconnecting with his roots – one man and a guitar, with a lot of stories to tell and songs to sing. ‘Nuff said.
