GREEN FOLLOWS EP RELEASE WITH FULL-BAND WHELANS GIG
Cathryn Green is set to follow the recent release of her EP, The Apple, with a series of live gigs starting at Whelan’s in Dublin on Wednesday, October 29. A distinctive singer and classically-trained pianist, Green’s band for the tour will include Binzer Brennan (drums), Gavin Fox (bass) and Anthony Gibney (guitar), all respected and experienced figures on the Irish music scene.
Green, originally from South Africa, is celebrating her recently-acquired Irish citizenship and has been resident in Dublin for the past six years. Brennan was a founder member of The Frames, and has played and recorded with Mundy and Bell X1. Fox is a founder member of Concerto for Constantine, and has worked with Turn and the Scottish rock band Idlewild. Both Brennan and Fox are members of rock outfit Little Matador. Gibney has played with and co-produced albums for Nick Kelly (Alien Envoy), Kevin Nolan/Julie Feeney and Johnny Rayge.
Green’s Whelan’s gig will include tracks from The Apple which contains three Green originals, ‘Hello’, ‘The Apple’ and ‘Place To Belong’, the latter a co-write featuring Shane Ó Fearghail of Caruso. Her eclectic repertoire also includes an inventive reworking of the Depeche Mode classic ‘Enjoy the Silence’, which Green obtained approval from Sony ATV Publishing to distribute worldwide.
The Apple is available worldwide in over 30 digital stores, including iTunes, Spotify, 7Digital, Deezer, Rhapsody and XBox.
Since arriving in Ireland in 2008, Green has been developing her craft by playing in pubs and venues around Ireland, the UK and Europe, all while holding down a full time job as an accountant. The Apple EP’s artwork features photography from Green’s childhood, as the songs chosen reflect different stages in Green’s life in South Africa, to finding her place in Ireland. “Along the way I’ve felt like a child, I’ve been so naive but at the same time I’ve been thankful for the mistakes I’ve made, and coming to Ireland has taught me to be more independent.”
Regarding her recent citizenship, “I feel like I’ve come full circle as my great grandparents were Irish, and now I am too.” Green’s debut EP, ‘Can You Understand?’ released in 2010, sparked interest from various press and media, not only in Ireland but also in the UK and Europe. Jackie Hayden (the man who originally signed U2) declared Cathryn Green Best Female Solo Act of 2010 in Hot Press and stated ‘this is so good we could soon be claiming her as one of our own.’ How prophetic his comments turned out to be!
