Augustines (formerly We Are Augustines) are a band at the top of their game who combine heartfelt lyrics, crashing drums and explosive guitar hooks to create a sound that is “exhilarating to an almost physical degree” D.i.S
This November sees the group make their long awaited return to the capital in a year that has seen their star rise on both sides of the Atlantic.
Ahead of their Whelan’s gig on November 27th, the band recorded this message:
Augustines are renowned for their intense live shows and heavy interaction with the audience. They are led by dynamic front man Billy McCarthy, he of the “throat-shredding voice” and almost incredible personal back story. His sidekicks comprise multi-instrumentalist Eric Sanderson and recently added British drummer Rob Allen. Originally based in Brooklyn, New York the band now reside in Seattle, Washington.
The American indie rockers released the critically acclaimed self-titled second album in February. Co-produced by Peter Katis (The National’s Alligator and Boxer, Frightened Rabbit, Interpol). ‘Augustines’ includes the singles ‘Nothing To Lose But Your Head’ and ‘Now You Are Free’, perennial favourites of 6 Music.
The new album has received plaudits from all quarters, with the Evening Standard crediting the band’s “Exhilarating anthems in waiting”, and Drowned in Sound proclaiming it “a head-bobbing hotplate of primal beats and sand-grain vocals” “fists in the air, teary eyed but smiling, booze-beaten rock and roll” “battling the negativity, kicking against the horror, surging towards glory”
