Whelan’s Upstairs

His latest single (which sounds like something out of a modern take on Ocean’s 11) follows Southern’s brilliant PLAZA album from earlier this year. Featuring a thumping guitar riff and layered, dreamy vocals; it’s a runaway winner. His take on the indie-rock genre is truly unique” – HotPress

“I’m such a big fan of Thom Southern. He just releases so much music and it’s all gold” – Rigsy, BBC Radio Ulster

‘Suzanne I’m Sorry’ is the perfect blend of melodic and poignant melody writing, with dissonant and frenetic drums and guitars. It’s slacker rock at its most effective. – When The Horn Blows

“She’s So Precious is filled with fuzzy shoegaze guitars, melodic indie rock vocals, and plenty of ‘90s slacker charm” – Under The Radar

“There’s something truly engaging about Thom Southern’s songwriting. A musician with a gilded touch, this Belfast-born, Liverpool-based artist drapes his every utterance in something melodic” – Clash

“I think you’re going to be hearing a lot more from Thom Southern, in fact I know you will” – Dan Hegarty (RTE 2FM)

Thom Southern started his musical career busking in Belfast city centre aged 16. After winning a Belfast Busking Competition he played a run of concerts in the Belfast Nashville Festival supporting Foy Vance, Iain Archer and Nanci Griffith. Through the festival Thom was awarded ‘Songwriter of the Year’ by the Belfast City Council.

He later teamed up with his sister Lucy to form the band ‘Southern’ and in 2012 they signed to Marathon Artists. After the release of their debut EP the duo were described by The Guardian as “The most promising singer/songwriters in Ireland today”, and within 18 months they saw their work used in international campaigns by ESPN, Netflix, Channel 4 and performed events around the world for brands such as for Saint Laurent and Burberry. In 2016 the duo launched a psych-rock project called MMODE which saw them add to the growing list of extensive tour supports, sharing stages with the likes of Jake Bugg, Bastille, Catfish & The Bottlemen, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Coral and The Kooks.

Thom then made the decision to focus on recording his own work in 2018, starting this new spell by spending two weeks away in Ibiza collaborating on a seperate side project with legendary producer Tom Rothrock, famous for producing Beck’s hit record Loser, albums by Elliott Smith, Foo Fighters, and the original soundtracks for Good Will Hunting and Collateral to name a few.

Thom’s previous work with brands, namely a track he recorded for a Mercedes Benz advert in 2018, provided the funds necessary to build a home studio and the time required to hone a sound before launching new solo material at the end of 2020.

His debut release ‘Shivers’ is a home recording that – given the unprecedented scenario caused by COVID-19 – was co-produced with iconic grammy winning producer Adrian Bushby (Muse, Foo Fighters, Feeder). ‘Perfect Someone’, his second single, is steeped in hazy nostalgia and refreshingly conjures the best of Thom’s primary influences; Beck, My Bloody Valentine and The Smashing Pumpkins.

In spring 2021 Thom released his third single ‘Soul Singer’ produced in collaboration with ex-Spacemen 3 frontman Peter Kember a.k.a Sonic Boom. The results of this co-production are stunningly distinctive and effortlessly instant.

In February 2022 Thom released his self-produced album ‘Plaza’ via Frictionless Music. It includes 10 tracks of bewitching shoegaze and captivating slacker rock all crafted and created by the multi-talented musician.

Whilst writing, performing and producing at home Thom also co-writes and produces music for his sister Lucy Gaffney who is making her own waves in the industry. Following the success of their previous joint ventures Southern and MMODE, the pair are both now simultaneously striking out with exciting solo projects.
