Return Of A Band Called So, out now on Nasoni Records of Berlin. is the second album by The So-Called, after their debut House Of The So from 2020. In many ways a close relative to its predecessor, with all songs from both albums recorded at the same 12 hour studio session.
What both albums also have in common is more than a passing nod to the approach of the great power trios/quartets from the late 60’s early 70’s, such as Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Led Zeppelin and so on, with an emphasis on musicianship, freedom of expression and relentless dynamic intensity, of course acknowledging the past, whilst at the same time maintaining a progressive unique distinctive identity of their own. They’ve also been likened at times to the MC5 and the Stooges for their primitive, intense approach to playing.
The So-Called are not interested in copying, rehashing or tributing, instead they prefer to focus energies on creation and innovation, originality, moving forward fearlessly into unchartered realms, and if they can’t be found, then perhaps discover new ways to approach existing ones!
The band have played at different times with members of Skid Row, Thin Lizzy, King Crimson and Van Der Graaf Generator among others. All the band have varied backgrounds in jazz/bebop, and can occasionally drift into heavy psychedelic fusion.
The So-Called were formed in Dublin in 2019, and they consist of Jude Shiels on guitar/vocals, Noel Martin Jnr on drums, and Udo Grunewald on bass.
In more recent times two members of The So-Called also played with Brush Shiels in Skid Row.
