The Skalps started in 2016 as something of a vanity project for Dubliner Tommy Byrne formerly of Present Arms fame who, upon approaching a significant birthday (not his 21st!), decided he wanted to “scalp” a few of his favourite musicians from the local music scene to record some of his original tunes for posterity.
Seven people eventually signed up for Tommy’s pet project including former band mates and musicians from other local ska bands such as The Dodgy Few, Pressure Drop and Gangsters, not to mention bands from other genres like The Knocking Shop, Retrofix and Dr. Mindflip. An EP of original material was the original goal but after a few rehearsals together the band realised they had something special going on and the lure of performing live became too much to resist. The Skalps live debut came at the 2016 at the Dublin Ska Festival and since then they haven’t looked back, going from strength to strength and regularly appearing on the Irish and UK Ska and Indie scene.
The Skalps’ sound is best described as fast and furious where melody, punchy ska/punk rhythms and snappy vocals combine to get you up off your arse and dancing your Dr. Marten’s off. As well as their stock of cracking original ska orientated tunes, the lads are also known for their penchant for unusual covers in the Ska/Rocksteady style and a tendency to veer wildly into other genres with little or no warning so be prepared for the odd surprise or two when you come to see us.
