New York singer-songwriter, harpist and guitarist Lizzie No is one of the most exciting new voices in contemporary American music.
You could say that she makes “Americana” music, in that her work pulls from the rhythms and traditions of blues, folk and country – not unlike the artists to whom she’s most often compared: Allison Russell, Rhiannon Giddens and Adia Victoria. However, her collaborations with Brian Dunne, Pom Pom Squad and Domino Kirke also embrace an undeniable indie influence that allows No to move seamlessly between overlapping musical circles.
After two stunningly eclectic albums, Hard Won and Vanity, Lizzie’s acclaimed new record, Halfsies, finds her still searching for freedom from the constraints of categorisation, but more importantly, freedom from the depths of despair and from an increasingly violent and nightmarish American cultural and political landscape.
Lizzie has toured with Iron & Wine, Adia Victoria, Sarah Shook and the Disarmers, and has showcased at festivals like Newport Folk Fest, AmericanaFest and South by Southwest. She is also a winner of the American Songwriter Lyrics Contest. In June 2021, she joined Basic Folk as a guest host, appearing monthly on the podcast.
“There’s an authority in her vocals, a deserved confidence in her lyrics – oh, and her voice is sweet enough to charm the birds…If you get the chance to catch her live in the coming months take it, it can’t be long until Lizzie No is going to be on substantially larger stages.” Americana UK, Feb 2023
Halfsies reviews:
“She may be comfortable taking musical inspiration from the blues, country, folk, and soul but her lyrics and concerns relate to the Black experience in today’s America” Americana UK 8/10
“Melodically engaging and lyrically thoughtful… it’s already secured a place in the 2024 Best Of list” Folk Radio UK
“A beautiful record” Pop Matters 8/10“Lizzie No is without a doubt one of the most exhilarating figures to emerge in the folk music scene in recent memory…Sublime lyricism, raw unfiltered emotion and an unrivalled voice for folk blues are just the tip of the iceberg.” Silent Radio
