Most people are asleep when “middle night” begins, but in the hours approaching midnight, Australian singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Hayden Calnin would slip into his coastal studio and create. He often recorded long after the world had gone to sleep, absorbing the energy of the evening. The seven-song EP named after these late-night sessions, Middle Night [due 21 November 2025 via Nettwerk], captures those quiet hours when – as Hayden explains – “strange happenings and deeper thoughts often happen”.

“Making music is the best way for me to put my feelings and experiences out there,” he says. “I’m not a great talker, so I wanted my songwriting to be more personal. This project seemed like the right avenue for me to really get everything out. It’s a very honest body of work.”

On Middle Night, he opens up like never before – and over a patchwork of indie, folk, and alternative soundscapes he delivers the most candid body of work of his career.

“Most of the EP was created in the middle of the night,” he shares. “I enjoy making music when it’s daytime too, but sometimes you go into different waves. For this project, I was in the ‘Night Owl’ wave where I was staying up later. After 10pm, I would jump into the studio and work on songs for hours. That’s when my mind decided it was at its creative best. It helped shape the record.”

The single “Some Things Distinct & Some Things Whole” drifts in on soft piano and a hushed vocal, setting a cosmic tone that ripples through the entire EP. “I lay my head onto the stretch of all infinity as I’m drifting to sleep,” he muses.

“It was the first thing I wrote for the project, and it set the tone for everything else,” he reveals. “It’s about the immaterial world and being open to the idea there’s a lot more than this physical world. You can read into it however you want – whether it’s through your dreams or certain experiences you’ve had. It basically says, ‘Life is much bigger and grander than what we see in front of us’.”

Strings swell towards the heavens on “You In Universe”. Hayden’s falsetto soars over softly strummed chords as he assures, “I got so much to offer, and I know what you offer.” He explains, “It’s about the connection to what we call home and Earth. It’s about feeling alive and being part of a bigger system. You’re so much bigger than yourself. In my eyes, everything and everyone is connected.”

Elsewhere on Middle Night, Hayden leans further into vulnerability and spiritual exploration. A glitchy beat holds the tempo on “Won’t Shy”. A horn sample blinks in the background behind shuddering piano as he comes to a crucial realisation, “The curious won’t shy, love is what survives.”

“It enters into the journey of otherworldly experiences on the stranger side of life,” he elaborates. “Sometimes, you have to hide this from others until you have the courage to talk about it.”

He confronts this very idea on “Not Gonna Hide It Anymore”. Here he stretches boundaries, layering airy delivery over ethereal instrumental transmissions. He fondly refers to it as “my artistic statement of the EP.” There’s also a gentle embrace of the subconscious in “All You Show”, sparked by a mandolin riff he stumbled on during a trip to New South Wales.

“Dreams are so helpful, yet they’re typically overlooked,” he shares. “It’s as if your brain is sorting out the mess – or trying to give you guidance in terms of what you should or shouldn’t be doing. I didn’t pay attention to my dreams for years, but I’m a lot more open to the dream space now. Your subconscious can be very helpful.”

Meanwhile, a stomping beat gives way to a chant on the banjo-driven finale “Take”. It culminates on a bright note as he proclaims, “I’m not afraid anymore of this life.”

“I was obsessed with playing banjo,” he smiles. “‘Take’ is a summary of what a lot of the EP is about. Life is always testing you. It can hold you down or pick you up. The lyrics are a moment of surrender, ‘This is how everything is going, and it’s okay.’”

Over the past decade, Hayden has quietly carved out a space of his own — releasing a string of EPs and albums including Cut Love, Pt. 1-2 [2016], A Life You Would Choose EP [2019], What It Means To Be Human [2021], A Turning of the Tide: Side A & B [2023], and, most recently, his All Kinds of Light EP [2024]. His music has resonated globally, amassing over 100 million streams and earning praise from The Guardian, American Songwriter, and Atwood Magazine. Along the way, his songs have soundtracked hit TV shows (The Good Doctor, The Vampire Diaries, Suits, So You

Think You Can Dance) and featured in the trailer for the Academy® Award-nominated film Room.

As a producer and collaborator, he’s lent his sonic fingerprint to artists like Didirri, Harrison Storm, Riley Pearce, Woodlock, and NYCK, and co-wrote the global smash hit “Falling Up” with Dean Lewis. He’s also shared stages with the likes of Matt Corby, Leif Vollebekk, Tom Odell, and The Antlers.

In the end, Hayden might just inspire you to say what you need to say without fear. “I’m still the same guy, but maybe with a few more grey hairs,” he laughs. “I feel more comfortable in my skin every passing year. I hope it continues.”
