Indie-folk singer songwriter Con Murphy is bringing his live show to Whelan’s, Dublin this April 30th along with his full band. Fresh off the back of a fantastic 2018 where twice played support to Aslan, made his first festival appearance with his band at Electric Picnic 2018 and played a sold out EP launch show in Stöðvarfjörður Iceland, he kicks off the live 2019 shows with an appearance at the iconic Whelans venue. His debut 4-track EP ‘The Fjord’ – a selection of folk songs that includes his catchy pop debut ‘Don’t Freak Out,’ and delves deeper to explore the delicate sounds of folk ballads with each song – from the lead track and powerful melancholy stand out folk ballad “Heavens Table” made up of ethereal piano, atmospheric guitar and poignant lyrics – described by Lyric FM’s Marty Whelan as “Gorgeous”(due for rerelease as a re-mastered single in April 2019), followed by uplifting and romantic piano track “Patiently Wait” which explores a the concept of patience and all its importance.
The final track and namesake of the EP ‘The Fjord’ was written on a trip to Iceland, Inspired by the stories from the Icelandic eastern fjords about love and wonder, Con wove them together with gentle melodies whilst sitting listening to the sultry tones of Patsy Cline. The song gives you a sense of homely nostalgia as the lyrics paint a story of time passing in a relationship and the wonderment of emigration.
The EP is a warm and heartfelt offering from a skilled storyteller with a guitar and proves Con Murphy is a songwriter worth listening to. The EP has grabbed some significant attention since its release in late March 2018 receiving airplay on national radio both at home and abroad, and earned Con feature slots at various festivals last summer both in Ireland and in the UK. He followed the success of his debut EP with a new single release under the title ‘Chocolate Pills’ which acts as a metaphor for positive human interaction, compassion and empathy expressed through a catchy alternative 80’s synth-pop track which blatantly explores sounds from his biggest musical influences including The Cure and Bell X1.
After receiving great reviews in Pure M magazine and features as the #714 Joe.ie Song Of The Day – Chocolate Pills is certainly one for your playlists. Having spent the past number of years developing his live show which has included appearances on the same bill as The Frank & Walters, Paddy Casey, Duke Special, Mundy, U.M.A.N, David Keenan and Damien Dempsey, this is an opportunity to get a full preview of Con’s upcoming album due for release in late 2019.
From the live show you can expect a “Forceful yet friendly combination of pop, rock and folk” – (Pure M Magazine on ‘Chocolate Pills’ single) – which pretty much sums up the varied live sound and what you can expect on the night!
Con & his band have been invited back to play the Electric Picnic Music and Arts festival 2019 and will also be appearing at the LaSemo festival in Brussels, Belgium this summer for the bands first international festival appearance.
