A Night for Nollaig
Noel Mc Mahon (1955 – 2017) was born on Christmas Day, known to many singer songwriters as ‘Nollaig.’ His life was his songs and looking after people – his family, his father and auntie and close relatives. He had a soft spot for the homeless and most of the money he earned busking he passed onto them!He had no website, he had no Facebook page, he had no Twitter account. He did have some beautiful songs and instrumental tunes.
Nollaig was brought up by his Grandparents , father and close family, as sadly his mother died giving birth to his sister, who only graced the world for a few days. He was left alone as a boy, with close family and his father (who took to the bottle for comfort) finding their way in the world.
As an adult Nollaig overcame his own addiction, alcoholism , he spent over 20 years attending AA meetings and writing music and helped his Father give up drink more than 12 yrs before he passed away. Sadly, Nollaig passed away on October 16th, 2017, from throat cancer. As storm Ophelia raged through the country, trees fell on our Irish roads, street lights faded, Nollaig drew his final breath of life.
It is our wish to let Nollaig live on through the beautiful creative, gentle songs that he wrote along with his powerful, melodic instrumentals.
Exactly a year after he passed away, on October 16th 2018, Focus Ireland, together with singer songwriter friends and those who knew and loved Nollaig, are hosting a night to celebrate his songs and tunes upstairs in Whelans. “High Hopes” will be singing a range of Nollaigs songs as well as friends and singer songwriters who are bringing their voice to continue life through the art-form that Nollaig loved the most, music.
